ログインChapter Three
Arthur’s POV My office door slams open, bouncing off the bookcase behind it. No knock. No warning. No chance to hide the creased photograph I’ve been staring at until my vision blurs, before Regina strides in like she owns the place. Her heels click against the hardwood floor, sharp and deliberate. Her skirt is so tight it looks painted on, and her top plunges low enough to make my wolf snarl in disgust. Does she even realise how desperate she looks? Or maybe she does, and doesn’t care. I hastily shove the photo under a folder, my heart pounding. Melody’s smile stares up at me from the edge of the paper, a cruel reminder of everything I lost. Everything I threw away without thought. “You look tense,” Regina purrs, her voice dripping with false sweetness. “Let me help take your mind off the Cup and all those heavy Alpha duties.” She leans across my desk, her top gaping open and her lips curling into what she probably thinks is an irresistible smile. My stomach churns. My wolf recoils. How many men has she made this offer to? I’ve heard the rumours, at least a dozen, and that’s being generous. My blood heats as memories of her venomous words resurface. ‘useless orphan slut.’ That’s what she spat the night everything fell apart. And now here she is, flaunting herself like a prize. The hypocrisy makes my jaw ache from clenching. She has no idea I heard her, or that she’s on borrowed time. I can’t cast anyone out until I take the Alpha title, but that day is coming, and when it does, she’ll be gone so quick her head will spin. Her father may be our lead warrior but I’ll find a way to get rid of her, I’ll get rid of them both if I must. “I’m not Alpha yet,” I bite out, my voice cold and my anger building. “Don’t call me that.” “Fine, Arty,” she says lightly, as if my anger amuses her. “No need to be so serious. You will be Alpha soon. The strongest, most respected leader in all the packs. Let me show you how good it feels to relax for once.” She circles the desk, her eyes gleaming withambition. Not desire, ambition. She doesn’t want me. She wants the title. She wants to be Luna, and she’ll burn anyone who stands in her way. Melody included. “I’ve signed up for the Cup,” she adds, chin lifting proudly. “So I can go with you. Keep you company.” Her words barely register before she reaches for me, assuming my silence means consent. My wolf snaps, fury surging through me. I shove back my chair so hard it crashes into the drinks cabinet. Regina stumbles, her mask slipping for a heartbeat before she smooths it back into place. Her gaze flicks to the photograph on my desk and her eyes narrow. She knows what it is, and who it’s of. My pulse spikes. That picture was meant to stay private until I could make things right. It’s all I have left of her and it’s the only thing that gives me or my wolf any comfort. “Get out,” I snarl, snatching the photo and locking it in the drawer. “Find someone else to entertain you. Goddess knows the barracks are full of men who love easy prey.” Her lips curl, but she doesn’t leave. “I’ll prove myself,” she vows, voice sharp now. “I’ll train harder. I’ll show you I’m the best Luna you could hope for. Your father will approve. The pack will approve. You’ll see.” She reaches for my arm just as Dane strolls in, whistling. “Uh oh,” he grins. “Am I interrupting?” “No,” I snap. “Regina, don’t test my patience. Get out. And never walk into my office uninvited again.” Her huff is pure theatre. She flicks her bleach-blonde hair over her shoulder and flounces out like a child hearing ‘no’ for the first time. Dane watches her go, eyebrows raised. “Seriously, mate? How many times is that now? Why do you keep turning her down? I’ve heard she’ll do anything for a scrap of attention.” “I don’t need a Luna with big tits and no brain,” I bite out, harsher than intended. “I have a mate chosen by the goddess. She’s the only one who should stand by my side.” The words hang heavy in the air. Dane’s grin fades. He leans against the doorframe, arms folded. “You mean Melody.” I don’t answer. I don’t have to. He’s suspected my regret before, but I’ve never admitted it. Until now. “Arthur…” Dane’s voice softens. “You know we have had no luck tracking her down, and even if we found her, do you really think she would forgive you. You rejected her. She left because she was humiliated” My chest tightens. “I know.” “She obviously doesn’t want to be found,” he reasons. “If you did find her, do you think you can just walk up and say sorry...” “I don’t,” I cut him off. “I don’t expect forgiveness. I expect a fight. And I’ll give her one if that’s what it takes.” Dane whistles low. “You really think you can trick her into coming back?” “I don’t want to trick her,” I admit, my voice raw. “I want her to see I’m not the same man who broke her. I’ve spent two years training, learning, clawing my way back from that mistake. My father is ready to hand over the reins, but he insists I take a chosen mate before he steps down. He won’t risk our bloodline.” “So the Cup…?” “Is my only chance,” I say. “The pack thinks I’m competing to find a Luna. Let them believe it. It buys me time, the chance to talk to other packs and find her, time to figure out how to win Melody back.” Dane studies me for a long moment. “And if she doesn’t want you? If you hunt her down and she rejects you?” My wolf growls, a sound that vibrates through my bones. “She will be ours again. No matter what it takes. No matter how much we have to beg or bleed.” “I’ll bring her back,” I promise him silently. “I swear it.” He’s suffered as much as I have, maybe more. Every day without her is a wound that won’t heal.Chapter Forty-TwoMelody’s POV I know it’s silly, childish really, but when I was a child and Alpha Luther and Luna Raine sat me down and told me my parents had both been killed defending the pack from rogues, I had this image in my head of a wild looking, rabid beast with a foaming mouth and evil red eyes, huge teeth and scraggly fur. My mother shouldn’t have even been in harm’s way. She never had any formal training, only what my dad had taught her, some simple self defence techniques. That day when she ran to the border with his lunch, leaving me at the pack house with Arthur and his parents, was the last day I ever saw them. This rogue... he looks nothing like the nightmare my imagination conjured up. I’ve seen a couple of rogues from a distance, but that was before I left here. After what happened with my parents, Alpha Luther kept me shielded from anything that might cause me any more trauma. The pack cells are damp and dark and with only one small barred window at the end
Chapter Forty-OneArthur’s POV By the time Melody is cleaned up and we have eaten it’s late. The others are back with all the luggage and supplies and are settled back in. Tomorrow it’ll be back to business as usual. My father sits on the huge dark leather sofa in his office, nursing a whiskey, with a grim look on his face. He knows that whatever I have to say can’t be good, and my mother stands beside him with her hand resting on his shoulder. My father has always told me that she is his strength. It’s why he won’t step down as Alpha until I have my Luna to stand beside me.“A man needs to know what he is fighting for. Your mother gives me the strength I need to weather the hard times, and the peace I need to lead our pack.” He told me when I was barely sixteen. At that time I already knew deep down that Melody would be my fated mate, and I couldn’t wait for us to lead together.“First of all, why did you ask me to keep Regina’s father out of the loop? If his daughter is missin
Chapter FortyMelody’s POV Pulling up at Silver Moon pack house is like a dream, or maybe a nightmare. I don’t know what to expect from Alpha Luther, Luna Raine, or the rest of the pack. I left without word in the middle of the night and have had nothing to do with any of them since.Being back here is weird, but also kind of nice. I feel a connection to the memories of my parents and this is the land I grew up on and called home for eighteen years. I honestly didn’t think wild horses would be able to drag me back here, but grandpa and Alpha Luther seem to have been scheming behind my back. Something Arthur isn’t very happy about. Now, rather than being here to train and help with the rogue problem, we have something much more pressing to deal with.“Take him to the cells, I’ll be down when I’ve cleaned up.” A familiar voice booms close by. Arthur gives my hand a squeeze and opens his door, stepping out to greet his dad who had been oblivious to our arrival. Craning my neck to
Chapter Thirty-Nine Arthur’s POV “We can’t find her anywhere. Llewellyn hadn’t seen her in the last couple of days either. It doesn’t look like much is gone from her room, and this was on her pillow. She wouldn’t leave without her things, not by choice.” Dane thrusts a piece of paper into my hand.I only sent him to tell Regina she would be travelling back with the other competitors from our pack, not Dane, Melody and I, and to be ready to leave in two hours. I admit I sent him because I was hoping to avoid a drama, but in hindsight, Regina hasn’t been herself since she hurt Melody almost a week ago. I’ve barely seen her, and when I have caught a glimpse of her, she has been all over Llewellyn like white on rice.“Let me see this.” I unfold the paper and scan the loopy script once, then read it properly again, letting every word sink in. This has to be a joke, payback for not giving in to her relentless pursuit. “Do you think it’s legit?” Dane whispers, trying not to draw the at
Chapter Thirty-EightRegina’s POVMy phone thuds as it drops from my shaking hand and lands on the floor at my feet. This can’t be happening. I can’t go back, not to how it was, how it’s been since mum died. I really thought these couple of weeks would change my life, but all I’ve done is alienate Arthur, make an enemy of my future Luna and if my mate is here I haven’t found him. That’s what my heart was holding onto. The hope that I would find my fated mate amongst the men here. He would have been my escape, my saviour, the one to take me away from my father and his messes that I always end up cleaning up.It’s clear to me now, that Arthur will only accept his fated mate, and if I’m honest with myself, she is perfect for him. I’ve let go of my childish fantasy that he was meant to be mine, but now I’m lost, without direction or protection. “We can run. They won’t notice we have gone until they get back. We could be far, far away by then.” My wolf has been telling me to run for ye
Chapter Thirty-Seven Melody’s POV Everything hurts. Not just physically, but my mind too. I can’t fathom how much has changed or will change in the coming days, weeks, months... years even.I won. My wolf and I actually did it. The first woman to ever win the spirit cup.I can taste the metallic tang of blood and my skin itches from the dirt drying on my arms and legs. Arthur is holding me so close I can’t feel the biting cold anymore. If anything all I feel is safe. That’s something I haven’t truly felt in such a long time, not since my parents were killed. I know I was physically safe with grandpa and New Moon, but this isn’t only physical. It’s something deeper, something I don’t trust entirely, but I’m content to lose myself in his embrace for now. “Close your eyes love. Rest. I’ll look after you. You will always be safe with me.” Arthur whispers reassuringly as he carries me towards his room. His voice is soft and gentle, like a balm for my weary mind.He walks straigh
Chapter SixteenArthur’s POVShe nods her permission. It’s not words, but given the circumstances I’ll take it. “I promise you won’t regret this, Melody. I’ll look after you and make you feel good.” It’s a promise I feel to my very core. This is a second chance I never thought I would get, and I
Chapter FourteenArthur’s POV Melody charges onto the field with grace and fury. She moves like she owns the ground beneath her feet. Strong, steady, balanced. Her shoulders are squared, her chin lifted, her gaze unwavering. The Melody I remember had a softness to her. A quiet, shy presence that
Chapter ThirteenArthur’s POVIt’s the first day of the Cup and the arena is a living beast.Growls, shouts, laughter, clashing metal, the thud of bodies hitting the ground. Thousands of voices blend together into a roar that bounces off the stone walls and into my bones. The air is charged, thick
Chapter TwelveArthur’s POVI watch Melody walk away, and it feels like part of me goes with her. The emptiness that’s been growing in my chest these past two years is becoming unbearable. Every step she takes feels like a thread being pulled loose inside me, the bond tugging, fraying, tearing just
