Chapter Four

Melody’s POV

The Spirit Ball Cup is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The venue sprawls across acres of open ground, a fortress of stone and steel rising against the pale winter sky. Banners bearing the crests of every competing pack ripple in the breeze, their colours vivid against the frost-tipped grass. The air hums with energy, wolves pacing in restless anticipation, the scent of adrenaline and ambition thick enough to taste.

I sign my name on the roster alongside Ralph, Rudy, and Thomas. Bobby has joined us too.

He calls himself our security, but he is here for me, I know he feels protective since the incident with the rogue and I like having him around. My cousins grin like they’ve already won, and Thomas gives me that smile, the one that feels like sunlight breaking through clouds. It’s warm, steady, and for a moment, it makes me forget the chill in my bones.

I thought it was a blessing in disguise when Jenner bowed out at the last minute and Thomas took his place, but now I’m not so sure. There is a growing tension between us that I can’t ignore and it makes me nervous.

“Ready to make history?” he asks, his voice teasing but soft at the edges.

“I’m ready to win,” I shoot back, chin high. “You’d better keep up.”

His laugh rumbles low, rich and easy. “Keep up? Melody, I plan to leave you in the dust.”

I arch a brow. “Big words for someone who hasn’t beaten me in training in months. You will place, no doubt, but it will be beneath me.”

“That’s because I’ve been holding back,” he says, his eyes glinting with mischief. “Wouldn’t want to bruise your ego before the big day.”

I snort. “Please. You couldn’t bruise my ego if you tried.”

Thomas gestures towards the sprawling arena beyond the gates. “Come on. Walk with me.

Get familiar with the grounds before the chaos starts.”

I hesitate for a heartbeat, then nod.

“Fine. But don’t think this stroll means I’m going to go easy on you.”

We fall into step, weaving through the throngs of competitors and spectators. The arena looms ahead, a massive oval of packed earth surrounded by towering stands carved from dark stone. Beyond it, warm-up zones buzz with activity and barked orders filling the air.

Wolves in human form stretch and spar, their movements fluid and lethal. The scent of pine smoke drifts from the food stalls lining the outer ring, mingling with the metallic tang of blood from early practice bouts.

“This place is incredible,” I murmur, taking it all in. “It feels… bigger than I imagined.”

Thomas glances at me, his expression softening.

“You belong here, Melody. More than anyone.” His fingers brush mine as we make our way closer to the lake that fills the horizon beyond the arena.

His words hit deeper than I expect. I shove the feeling down and smirk instead. “Flattery won’t save you when I win.” My fingers tingle and my wolf stirs. She has been frantic with the anticipation of seeing Arthur, but something about Thomas calms her. He is safe, steady and always there.

“Oh, I’m counting on winning,” he says lightly, but there’s something in his tone, something that makes my wolf perk up and pay attention. “And when I do… I’m going to do something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

I blink, thrown by the sudden seriousness in his voice. “Like… buy yourself a trophy?”

His smile tilts, almost sad. “Not exactly.” He kicks a rock on the path and puts his hands in his pockets, turning to head back towards the arena.

I laugh it off, wondering if he means what I think. “Well, you’d better start planning your consolation speech, because I’m taking that title.” I jest, following him.

He chuckles and stops, turning to face me, but his eyes linger on me a moment before he looks away. My chest tightens. What did he mean? My wolf hums with curiosity, but I push it aside. Focus. Win first. Questions later.

We round a corner, and voices drift towards us, one is particularly high-pitched, grating. I know that tone before I even see her.

“Arthur! Wait for me!” Regina’s shrill call slices through the air. My stomach drops like a stone. I glance through the trees just in time to see her struggling with an absurd amount of luggage, tottering on heels that have no business being near a training ground. She waves dramatically, calling his name again.

Arthur.

My breath catches. Two years. Two years since his rejection shattered me. Two years since I swore I’d never let him see me broken again. And now he’s here, broad-shouldered, commanding, every inch the future Alpha he was born to be. His dark hair gleams in thefading sunlight, his movements sharp and sure as he strides ahead, ignoring Regina’s

desperate calls.

My wolf whimpers, torn between rage and longing. “Mate.” The word echoes like a wound reopening.

Regina beams like the sun itself, dragging her ridiculous bags as if she’s chasing a dream.

And maybe she is. She wanted this, wanted him. She has always set her sights on being Luna.

Seeing her now, smiling like she owns the world, makes the old pain tear open all over again.

“She has taken everything that should be ours,” my wolf snarls, fury simmering beneath the surface. “And now she flaunts it.”

I square my shoulders, forcing the ache down deep where it belongs. I’ve survived worse than this. I can survive this too. But the sight of Arthur, so close, so untouchable, makes my chest ache like it did the night he spoke those words, ‘I reject you.’

“I remember” I whisper quietly to myself. The stares. The way the pack looked at me like I was dirt under their boots. Slutty orphan. Unworthy. Words that clung to me like burrs, cutting deeper every time. I left everything behind to escape that shame. I clawed my way back from nothing, trained until my muscles screamed, until my hands bled, until I couldn’t

stand without shaking. And still, seeing him now, the wound feels fresh.

Thomas notices my silence. “Melody?” His voice is gentle, concerned.

“I’m fine,” I lie, eyes locked on Arthur’s retreating figure. He doesn’t see me. Of course he doesn’t. Why would he? He made his choice. And I made mine.

I drag my gaze away, forcing a smile for Thomas. “Looks like the circus is in town.”

He snorts. “Ignore them. They’re not worth your attention.”

Easy for him to say. My wolf growls softly, unsettled. I clench my fists, my nails biting into my palms. I’ve worked too hard to let this break me. I’m strong. I’m ready, I think.

Can I really do this?

Can I win?

Not just the Cup, but the battle inside me?

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Forty-Two

Chapter Forty-TwoMelody’s POV I know it’s silly, childish really, but when I was a child and Alpha Luther and Luna Raine sat me down and told me my parents had both been killed defending the pack from rogues, I had this image in my head of a wild looking, rabid beast with a foaming mouth and evil red eyes, huge teeth and scraggly fur. My mother shouldn’t have even been in harm’s way. She never had any formal training, only what my dad had taught her, some simple self defence techniques. That day when she ran to the border with his lunch, leaving me at the pack house with Arthur and his parents, was the last day I ever saw them. This rogue... he looks nothing like the nightmare my imagination conjured up. I’ve seen a couple of rogues from a distance, but that was before I left here. After what happened with my parents, Alpha Luther kept me shielded from anything that might cause me any more trauma. The pack cells are damp and dark and with only one small barred window at the end

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Forty-One

Chapter Forty-OneArthur’s POV By the time Melody is cleaned up and we have eaten it’s late. The others are back with all the luggage and supplies and are settled back in. Tomorrow it’ll be back to business as usual. My father sits on the huge dark leather sofa in his office, nursing a whiskey, with a grim look on his face. He knows that whatever I have to say can’t be good, and my mother stands beside him with her hand resting on his shoulder. My father has always told me that she is his strength. It’s why he won’t step down as Alpha until I have my Luna to stand beside me.“A man needs to know what he is fighting for. Your mother gives me the strength I need to weather the hard times, and the peace I need to lead our pack.” He told me when I was barely sixteen. At that time I already knew deep down that Melody would be my fated mate, and I couldn’t wait for us to lead together.“First of all, why did you ask me to keep Regina’s father out of the loop? If his daughter is missin

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Forty

Chapter FortyMelody’s POV Pulling up at Silver Moon pack house is like a dream, or maybe a nightmare. I don’t know what to expect from Alpha Luther, Luna Raine, or the rest of the pack. I left without word in the middle of the night and have had nothing to do with any of them since.Being back here is weird, but also kind of nice. I feel a connection to the memories of my parents and this is the land I grew up on and called home for eighteen years. I honestly didn’t think wild horses would be able to drag me back here, but grandpa and Alpha Luther seem to have been scheming behind my back. Something Arthur isn’t very happy about. Now, rather than being here to train and help with the rogue problem, we have something much more pressing to deal with.“Take him to the cells, I’ll be down when I’ve cleaned up.” A familiar voice booms close by. Arthur gives my hand a squeeze and opens his door, stepping out to greet his dad who had been oblivious to our arrival. Craning my neck to

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Thirty-Nine

Chapter Thirty-Nine Arthur’s POV “We can’t find her anywhere. Llewellyn hadn’t seen her in the last couple of days either. It doesn’t look like much is gone from her room, and this was on her pillow. She wouldn’t leave without her things, not by choice.” Dane thrusts a piece of paper into my hand.I only sent him to tell Regina she would be travelling back with the other competitors from our pack, not Dane, Melody and I, and to be ready to leave in two hours. I admit I sent him because I was hoping to avoid a drama, but in hindsight, Regina hasn’t been herself since she hurt Melody almost a week ago. I’ve barely seen her, and when I have caught a glimpse of her, she has been all over Llewellyn like white on rice.“Let me see this.” I unfold the paper and scan the loopy script once, then read it properly again, letting every word sink in. This has to be a joke, payback for not giving in to her relentless pursuit. “Do you think it’s legit?” Dane whispers, trying not to draw the at

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Thirty-Eight

Chapter Thirty-EightRegina’s POVMy phone thuds as it drops from my shaking hand and lands on the floor at my feet. This can’t be happening. I can’t go back, not to how it was, how it’s been since mum died. I really thought these couple of weeks would change my life, but all I’ve done is alienate Arthur, make an enemy of my future Luna and if my mate is here I haven’t found him. That’s what my heart was holding onto. The hope that I would find my fated mate amongst the men here. He would have been my escape, my saviour, the one to take me away from my father and his messes that I always end up cleaning up.It’s clear to me now, that Arthur will only accept his fated mate, and if I’m honest with myself, she is perfect for him. I’ve let go of my childish fantasy that he was meant to be mine, but now I’m lost, without direction or protection. “We can run. They won’t notice we have gone until they get back. We could be far, far away by then.” My wolf has been telling me to run for ye

  • The Orphan Luna's Rejection   Chapter Thirty-Seven

Chapter Thirty-Seven Melody’s POV Everything hurts. Not just physically, but my mind too. I can’t fathom how much has changed or will change in the coming days, weeks, months... years even.I won. My wolf and I actually did it. The first woman to ever win the spirit cup.I can taste the metallic tang of blood and my skin itches from the dirt drying on my arms and legs. Arthur is holding me so close I can’t feel the biting cold anymore. If anything all I feel is safe. That’s something I haven’t truly felt in such a long time, not since my parents were killed. I know I was physically safe with grandpa and New Moon, but this isn’t only physical. It’s something deeper, something I don’t trust entirely, but I’m content to lose myself in his embrace for now. “Close your eyes love. Rest. I’ll look after you. You will always be safe with me.” Arthur whispers reassuringly as he carries me towards his room. His voice is soft and gentle, like a balm for my weary mind.He walks straigh

Chapter SeventeenMelody’s POV My senses have up and left me. Well... my common sense at least. This is wrong but it feels so right. His touch, the way his fingers feel inside me, the pull of the mate bond making everything feel deeper, stronger... it’s too much. All I can do is let go. So I do.
