I stood frozen, watching Elder Freya's calm yet tense expression.

She didn't say a word. Her silver glow pulsed brighter, flickering like lightning trapped beneath her skin.

My instinct was to shake her and demand answers, but I forced myself to stay calm.

And it didn't take long. Rissa gradually moved, waking up and sitting as Elder Freya had silently instructed her to.

She blinked at me with that sweet smile that always melted my worry. My anger.

"Veldrin, I'm going to wash up," she softly said, giving Elder Freya a gentle smile before getting out of bed.

She headed to the washroom, humming as if everything were normal, leaving me confused.

The moment the door shut behind her, Elder Freya released a shaky breath.

Her hands trembled as she pulled them back and folded them into her lap. She leaned against the bedframe, her pale face drawn and tired.

"Elder, are you alright?" I approached her ready to help.

"I'm fine..." She answered weakly.

"What did you see? What's wrong with he

Seeing me fall silent, as if lost in thought, Elder Freya gently patted my arm."Stop stressing yourself, my king. There's no need to fear an unseen future. All you can do now is ensure the Queen isn't overwhelmed by her condition. And keep praying she can have a natural birth."Her voice was soft, her smile faint, but the weight in her eyes carried wisdom. It was enough to ease my storming thoughts for a moment.I nodded in agreement, though my chest still burned. Trusting the future was easy to say, challenging to do. Because right now, I needed to uncover who dared poison Rissa.A dark thought flashed in my mind, sharp as a blade. 'It must be Thane. Him or his people. Slithering into my territory like rats. But who?'The question clawed at me, refusing to let go. The more I thought about it, the tighter my chest grew. I tried to bury the suspicion, at least for now. I continued talking with Elder Freya, planning how to draw out whoever was behind this. But no matter the plan, I m

The next day.I barely slept all night. My mind was restless. Every creak of the cabin made me sit up like a paranoid owl, convinced someone—or something—was lurking outside, ready to jump at us.Just before the sun rose on the horizon, I heard movement not far from the cabin. I immediately checked on Rissa first. She was still sound asleep, curled under the blankets, her face soft and peaceful. Carefully, I slid out of bed, afraid of waking her up. The sound of movement became clearer, and it didn't take long for me to notice who it was. Rowan and Elder Freya.I am standing at the main door, waiting for their car to arrive. For a moment, guilt hit me right in the chest. Elder Freya looked so fragile now. Her once powerful presence had dimmed. Her skin was pale, and wrinkles etched deep into her face. Her brilliant eyes that used to gleam with wisdom were dull, clouded, as if they were tired of watching this cursed world. Her body looked so frail, I swear if a strong wind passed

I growled and rubbed my temples, hearing my wolf words. 'Kyrex, she wasn't sneezing. She was in pain. And I couldn't do a damn thing about it.''Yes, I noticed. You almost ripped Remi's head off before she could finish a sentence. Very majestic. Very Kingly. Truly inspiring.'I scowled. 'Are you mocking me?''Absolutely,' he replied without shame. 'Because right now, you're embarrassing both of us. You can't collapse every time Rissa stubs her toe. You're supposed to be the Lycan King, not a fragile husband wringing his hands at the kitchen counter.'Despite my sour mood, I almost laughed. The wolf had a point. Almost. 'You're forgetting one thing. She's not just my wife. She's carrying my child. Our child. The heir of this kingdom!''Oh, I know that. It's insulting that you think I forgot about it. That's why I'm telling you to stop whining. The pup doesn't need a father who panics whenever the wind changes direction. You think Rissa wants to look at her big, bad king and see a pud

My hand clenched tightly, hearing her words. I know she will never betray me, but I also can't ignore the evidence. Before I could say anything, suddenly Kyrex's voice interrupted me, 'She is telling the truth. She has no hand in this. Her oath binds her. Her hands healed Rissa, not harmed her.''Then who?' I thought the question was like a burning coal between my ribs. The room seemed too narrow, and every face in my mind crowded forward as suspect and motive. I saw Keala's quick smile, the maids' dutiful presence, and the half-remembered visitors to the castle. My brain, traitorously inventive, spun out possible conspiracies like a hawk testing the wind. But Remi—Remi was the one in the room with Larissa during lunch. She drank the tea and ate the cookie from Remi. Opportunity drew a pattern with clean, sharp lines. All those lines are now pointing at Remi!"Listen to me," I said more softly, "You stay here. You watch. You do not leave. You do everything in your power to find w

For a moment, I stood there staring at both of the maids in return. I know they told the truth, and none of them lied to me. I could also hear their thoughts, no malicious spark in their minds. They are both clean.'They are clean.' Kyrex seems to have thought the same as I did. "Get out," I growled. They scrambled away, skirts fluttering like frightened birds. The moment the door shut, I began pacing again. My wolf growled inside me, restless.'If Keala harmed her, I'll...''Careful,' Ky interrupted. 'We don't have any proof. Yet.''I don't need proof to rip someone apart,' I snarled back.'And if you kill her for nothing?'I froze. My fists tightened until my claws pierced my palms. Blood dripped to the floor, sizzling with heat from my fury.'Then I'll tear apart the real culprit next,' I muttered.Ky groaned inside me. 'Sometimes I wonder how you became king. Your plans are always "kill first, regret later."''It works,' I snapped.'Not for your Mate,' he countered, his voice da
