Chapter 2

Author: Shirley
He knew my foster mother needed her medicine every single day.

Yet he still lectured me over the phone. "How many times do I have to say it? If you need money, go to Serena. She isn't going to deny you."

But getting that money from Serena was nearly impossible.

"What kind of shady clinic asks for two hundred thousand upfront? Luna, are you using this treatment as a cover to pocket the cash?"

"Two hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money. Tell the clinic to give you an itemized bill first. I'm rejecting this application for now."

I desperately explained that it was a down payment for emergency surgery. An itemized bill could only be printed after the patient was safe.

She tilted her head and smiled. She pretended to finally understand.

"Oh, I see. My bloodline has always been pure and healthy. I don't know anything about the diseases of you low-ranking wolves."

"But the pack's rules can't be broken. Go get official paperwork from the clinic as proof. I have to reject this for now."

Later, she added with a mocking tone, "I heard that shady clinics can forge records. I'm not accusing you of funding Rogues. But this money can't be handed out blindly."

"You need to provide their official policy to clear your name."

And just like that, the window to save my mother slipped away. It was stolen by her endless excuses.

By the time I finally got the money, it was too late. Even the top doctors in North America could only shake their heads at me.

In that moment, hatred felt like fine needles piercing my chest. Even breathing hurt.

This mate bond was a toxic cage. I couldn't stay in it for another second.

When I finally knew what to do, I felt light. It was like the Alpha mark on my soul had lost all its weight.

So when I saw Serena's flirty selfie on social media, I felt nothing.

The photo showed the massive windows of the pack house. Two glasses of wine. A man's hand rested on a chair. I recognized the cufflinks. I bought them for him myself.

The caption read, "Late nights at the office are always worth it when you work for the best Alpha."

I took a screenshot and left a simple like.

Sure enough, Killian texted me immediately. Whenever it involved Serena, he was always fast.

"Serena did a great job on the new project. I just bought her dinner as a reward. Don't start causing a scene."

Two seconds later, he sent another message. He sounded completely entitled.

"You already liked the post. If you unlike it now, people will gossip."

"Leave a comment praising her hard work. Everyone's watching. It'll make you look like a generous Luna."

"I'll come home early tonight. We can order whatever you want for dinner."

I wasn't going to reply. But the anger in my chest refused to go down.

So, I did exactly what Killian asked.

I typed a comment under Serena's photo.

"Secretary Serena is truly dedicated. You treat the Luna like a lowly maid. You enforce the pack budget like it's Alpha law. Great job. Keep it up."

"Every cent you save the pack will make a great wedding fund for when you finally replace me. Thumbs up."

After hitting send, I tossed my phone onto the carpet.

The Mind-link in my head flared to life. His anger rushed through our bond. It burned like a physical grip on the back of my neck.

I closed my eyes. For the first time ever, I actively blocked the connection.

The room suddenly became very quiet. I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then I started packing.

It didn't take long.

Everything valuable in this house was locked inside that high-tech safe. Everything that supposedly belonged to the Luna was trapped in the closet.

I couldn't take them. And I didn't want to.

I only packed a few old T-shirts, a worn-out medical notebook, and a cloth bag hand-sewn by my foster mother.

Three years. I lived in this pack house like a guest. My presence in his life was easily wiped away.

I stood in front of the mirror. I looked at the safe with its blinking red light.

My eyes were finally open. I finally saw the truth.

Spring came early this year. The ocean breeze was warm and carried the smell of salt. I stood barefoot in the soft, white sand. I held a small camera in my hands. I pointed it at the crashing blue waves and took a picture. The shutter clicked loudly."I made it, Mom," I whispered to the wind. "We finally made it to the ocean."I didn't bring her ashes. I scattered them in a beautiful mountain forest years ago. But I brought her memory. I kept the promise I made to her in that cold hospital room. My life was beautiful now. My clinic had grown from a small lab into the largest independent medical center in the region. We didn't just treat werewolf diseases. We became a safe haven. Just last Tuesday, my past came full circle. A young she-wolf named Lily stood crying at my clinic's front desk. She was an Omega. Her younger brother was sick with a high fever, but she couldn't pay for the medicine. "Please," Lily begged my nurse. "My mate is the Beta of our pack. He has the money. But

The luxury goods and the pack house sold shockingly fast on the auction block. The secret buyers placed massive bids. They paid millions over the asking prices without a second thought. And weirdly, no one ever messaged me to ask for authenticity papers.Even the pack house deed was transferred to a shell company within three days.I didn't bother tracking down the IP addresses of the buyers.I knew exactly who was buying my old life. And I simply didn't care.In the months that followed, I poured all my energy into werewolf disease research. Before long, I earned my Master Healer rank. I started running my own clinic lab with a team of brilliant students.Doctor Evans leaned against the lab counter with her coffee. She jokingly warned me. "You better run strict background checks on these new medical students.""I'm way too old to be cleaning up the toxic mate drama of your students."We both burst out laughing. The bright sound echoed off the white tiles of the lab.Later that exact s

I opened the door. Killian's Beta was standing in the hallway. He looked incredibly nervous and shifted his weight awkwardly."Miss Hazel. The Alpha felt the settlement in the Rejection papers was completely unfair to you. He ordered me to hand-deliver this blank check."I looked past his shoulder and stared down at the street. A familiar black SUV was parked on the curb with its tinted windows rolled up tight. I calmly took the check, walked downstairs, and approached the car."Killian, I suppose I should thank you," I said directly to the dark glass. "You didn't follow through on your threats. You didn't actually leave me on the streets."If he'd used pack laws to freeze my money, no one in the werewolf courts would've blamed him.But I needed to finish this once and for all. "The settlement money is enough to last me three lifetimes.""But I'm still going to auction off every single thing in that house.""Because when I burn a bridge, I burn it to the ground."Hearing this, the tint

On our final day at the camp, Killian walked over holding a beautifully wrapped velvet box.The silk ribbon was tied by hand. He wore a look of confident victory."I swear to you this time, baby, you're going to love this."I didn't even let him pull the ribbon. I stared dead into his eyes. "It's that limited edition designer bag, isn't it?"His eyes lit up like a praised pup. "How did you know?""Because I saw it plastered all over Serena's social media," I said flatly. "You probably ordered your Beta to buy everything on the pack's Luna wishlist. Too bad Serena was the one managing that list. It's just a catalog of her personal fantasies. She loves flashy, useless garbage.""Like that ugly ring covered in a halo of diamonds.""Like those ridiculously expensive gold-plated stethoscopes.""And especially those rare, asthma-inducing flowers."With every item I listed, the arrogant color drained from Killian's face. He turned pale.He probably never realized the truth. Every single 'roma

Over a dozen matte-black SUVs parked at the bottom of the muddy slope.I stepped out of my tent. Killian didn't look like a rejected, broken mate. Instead, he put on a charming smile."My pack happens to be building a resort nearby. I know you field medics always need money.""So I had my team wire a massive donation to your head doctor's account last night."He eagerly pulled a fancy takeout box from the nearest car."This is from that fancy bakery you love downtown. I had my pilot fly the chef and the ingredients out here overnight. It's fresh."I simply crossed my arms. I made absolutely no move to take it. Killian's confident smile faded, and his tone took on a pleading edge."Baby, I know I took you for granted. I was a blind fool. I swear on my wolf I'll change.""Let's rebuild our mate bond from scratch, okay?""Every bit of love you were denied, I'll give back to you tenfold."I stared at that ridiculously expensive cup of coffee. A bitter wave of comedy washed over me.I truly

"Killian, do you really think we're here tonight just because of Serena?"He stared at me with empty eyes.He truly didn't understand. He was desperate to explain himself."Baby, I know I ignored your feelings. I shouldn't have let an employee disrespect you.""But I saw other Alphas managing their money like that. I thought I was teaching you responsibility. I never meant to hurt you. I never meant to let your mother die.""Just come back to the pack house with me. I'll donate massive medical supplies to your team. I'll buy you that sports car, the diamonds, anything you want."I looked at him desperately offering me bribes. I knew he still didn't understand."Stop talking, Killian.""Our bond is completely dead. I only want your signature on those Rejection papers. I want absolutely nothing else from you."The confusion on his face deepened. He couldn't understand why his Alpha groveling wasn't working.A flash of betrayed anger surfaced in his eyes.Killian stepped closer.
