The Millbrook cafe was still the same after six years.

I lived three blocks away from there when I was twenty-two.

Back then, I used to come here almost every morning and sit in this booth. I felt more like myself than anywhere I had ever been.

Sitting here again made me realize how time flies.

I ordered a cup of coffee and waited.

Iris was nine minutes late, for her she was basically on time. She came through the door adjusting her scarf, saw me, and went straight to my table.

She didn’

The ceremony was held at the Meridian Hotel. It was not the Meridian Grand, the hotel where Adrian had stayed in the days after the detonation.I wore the dress Iris had told me to buy three weeks ago. She called and asked what I planned to wear. When I said I hadn’t thought about it yet, she made a sound that clearly showed what she thought of my answer. The dress was good, dark green. Iris had excellent taste and zero patience for people who didn’t look after themselves when the moment called for it.I arrived alone. I had been to events like this many times over the years, sometimes with colleagues, sometimes with editors, and sometimes by myself. The dinner before the presentations was exactly like every other dinner before a journalism awards ceremony. These people usually worked alone or in tiny teams of two or three. They spent their days collecting evidence in quiet offices, on secure computers, and in careful talks with sources. Now they were all together in one room, trying

  • The Playboy's Forced Bride   Chapter 127: Nathaniel, Unexpected Call

The call came on a Friday morning.I was at the Meridian Press, on the third day of the transition period, sitting at the desk that had been cleared for me on the fourteenth floor with a coffee that was still the right temperature and a document outlining the initial investigative function framework that I had been building since Monday. The work was absorbing in the exact way that genuinely new work was, requiring everything I knew in a direction I had not yet explored. I had been inside it for two hours without realizing, my phone lit up on the desk beside the laptop.Nathaniel Cross.I looked at it for a moment.I answered.“Harper.” His voice was the same as it always was. “Nathaniel.”There was a brief pause. “He asks about you,” he said.I was quiet.“Not directly, I want to be precise about that. He doesn’t ask directly.”He paused again. “He asks about the publication, and about the investigative work you’re building. Whether the Hargreave trial preparation is affecting your

Daniel sat across from me with his hands flat on the desk. The folder in front of him was closed. He looked at me with the expression I had learned to recognize over six years of working together. He was pleased.Daniel rarely showed when he was pleased. Today, it was clear.“You know why you’re here,” he said.“Yes, tell me anyway.”The offer came through formally that morning. I had already understood what it would look like for two weeks.“The investigation showed what good work can look like. It was more than just a success, it showed what is possible when a journalist is given enough time, resources, and freedom to do the job properly. I want that approach used across this publication at the editorial level. I want someone who has already done it to help other journalists do the same.”“You want me to teach what I know?”“I want you to create a role that has never existed before,” he said. “One that focuses on long-form investigative work and applies the same high standards you u

Nobody had filed anything. I noticed this on a Wednesday morning, about five weeks after publication. I was sorting through the leftover paperwork from the past several months when I came across the original marriage contract. It was still sitting in the digital folder where I had saved it eighteen months earlier and had not opened it since. The language was precise and clear. The agreement had always included an exit: a timeline, specific terms, and a dissolution clause built into its structure from the beginning. I read it and closed it. I did not call the lawyer whose name was on the documentation. I did not even mention it to Adrian. I put my laptop aside, made coffee, and went about the rest of my day. The legal reality of our marriage still existed. Technically, ending it was a simple administrative matter. The contract included a dissolution process that required both of us to file jointly. It was a brief legal procedure that lawyers could finish in an afternoon wi

  • The Playboy's Forced Bride   Chapter 124: Dominic

The lawyers handled everything. That’s how it ended.Dominic resigned from the board first, before anyone even asked him to. His lawyers sent the letter the Monday after the story came out: two pages of clean, precise legal language that did the job without any fuss.Next he sold his shares. An independent firm did the valuation, the terms were settled through letters and emails, and the transfer went through without father and son exchanging a single phone call. Then his lawyers started dealing with his own legal problems. This was a separate process, and it was going to take years. It involved a regulatory investigation and a criminal referral that came with Hargreave’s arrest. The case was serious, a financial crimes charge built on forty-three pages of clear evidence showing he had planned everything, plus fifteen years of recorded transactions.By this point, the whole process belonged to the authorities. They didn’t need anything extra from Adrian, just what the law required hi

The formal restructuring began the week after publication.Adrian moved through it with focused efficiency. I had seen him use this same approach in important meetings months earlier. This time there was no opposition to manage. No proxy contest to defeat, no careful navigation around men with competing interests. The opposition was gone. Hargreave was in custody awaiting trial. Dominic had resigned from every position. The formal severance arrived through legal letters rather than conversation. It was the institutional version of the faint careful door closing, that had ended their relationship in the sitting room weeks ago. What remained was the company. For the first time in its history, the company was entirely Adrian to remake. He worked from the dining table for the first three days. The legal note was filled with his handwriting. This time the framework had real implementation behind it. He called consultants. He met with the audit firm Nathaniel recommended. The one known for

I hadn’t slept. I sat in the dark until four in the morning, thinking over the same question repeatedly in my head. What if someone already knew who I was? What if letting me in had been the plan all along? By the time the sky turned gray, I still couldn't come up with answers. I showered, dressed

The dinner went better than I expected, but worse than I needed. Dominic was exactly what my three years of research had warned me about. He watched me across the table the whole night with eyes that didn’t match his polite smile. I smiled back, chose every word carefully, and gave him nothing he c

  • The Playboy's Forced Bride   Chapter 2: The Deal

I stood in the hallway for a long moment. The smart move was to turn around, get back in the elevator, go home, and forget I ever saw it. I had spent three years playing it safe, knowing exactly when to step forward and when to pull back, knowing the difference between an opportunity and a trap. Bu

  • The Playboy's Forced Bride   Chapter 1: The Announcement

Chapter 1: The Announcement The trick to going invisible in a room full of rich people was simple. You keep your shoulders low and move at an even pace, don't rush. My eyes were fixed on the tray, never on their faces, I offered a small smile if someone glanced over, just enough to seem safe, then
