Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
The call connected quickly, and I heard James' comforting voice. "I heard all about what happened to your crops, babe. Is there anything I can do to help?"

I felt warmth bloom in my heart. James was such a good person, and yet he died because of my stubbornness in my past life. This time, I swore I'd save Mom and ensure nothing happened to James as well.

So, I said, "James, I need a favor. Stay where you are this afternoon. Don't move. I'll come see you tonight, alright?"

I racked my brains for a suitable answer.

Yet, James didn't hesitate as he replied, "I don't know why, but since you sound so serious, it has to be important. Don't worry. I'll do as you say and wait for you to come pick me up."

I nodded emphatically, then wiped away my tears and rushed to Central Hospital. I skipped all formalities and fell to my knees before Dr. Hank Vance.

He immediately realized the gravity of the situation and chose to treat Mom.

I glanced at the time and realized I was an hour early.

Hank himself said that since I was on time, there was a greater chance of a full recovery for Mom.

However, it wasn't until the three-hour surgery was over that Dr. Vance removed his mask to give me the good news. "The surgery was a success. She'll make a complete recovery with proper rest."

Mom lay on the hospital bed. She slowly opened her eyes, but she closed them bitterly upon seeing me.

She was still angry at me, but I wept with joy regardless.

At least I managed to save Mom this time, and I managed to escape from Grandma's awful dreams.

My first thought was to call James to tell him the good news, but all my calls went unanswered. What was going on?

Before I could recover from the shock, a commotion erupted in the hospital, and I heard someone yelling my name.

I turned around, and what I saw sent chills down my spine.

James' mother, Anna Wilson, was striding toward me as she launched into a tirade. "Vanessa West, you bitch! You killed my boy!"

"Did something happen to James? How's that possible? I asked him to stay put—"

Anna suddenly went berserk, cutting me off. "So it was your fault after all? Do you know that my son died because a drunk driver hit him while he was waiting for you at the intersection? You killed him!"

This felt like a huge blow to my senses.

James was… dead?

My eyes widened in shock. I couldn't believe this was happening.

I deliberately steered clear of Grandma's instructions in the dream. So how did I end up killing James?

Before I could react, Anna suddenly pulled out a knife from her pocket—the very same knife that killed me in my past life. She then lunged at me with a vicious thrust.

Yet, at that moment, someone shoved me aside violently and took the blow.

"Vanessa! Run!"

It was Mom.

With a sickening slice, the blade pierced her chest. Her blood spattered onto my face.

I snapped out of my daze, only to see Mom lying in a pool of blood. She was clutching at Anna's leg and yelling, "Vanessa! Go!"

Anna was unable to break free. Furious, she kicked Mom again, glaring at me menacingly as she hissed, "You little shit! If you don't get the hell over here and pay for my son's life, then I'll kill your mother before I come after you!"

The kitchen knife in Anna's hand was about to plunge into Mom's chest when, in a flash, realization dawned on me.

I understood why Grandma was haunting my dreams, and why I couldn't change the cause of the tragedy. I suddenly understood everything.

James' voice trembled as he spoke. "Mom, we're in trouble. There are so many cops outside. We're surrounded!"So, he had been hiding outside and keeping watch the entire time?Several police officers quickly filed into the ward, instantly bringing the situation under control. The officer in charge was the one I'd contacted beforehand. On my way to the hospital, as the clues finally became clearer to me, I realized that the nightmares I had were most likely induced by hypnosis or hallucinogens. I was driven by a strong will to live as well as rage.I recorded this nightmarish ordeal as well as any manner of potential financial crime clearly on my phone before sending it to the officer I'd previously contacted.Shawn stared at both my parents, Anna, and James. "You lot."His gaze was razor sharp. His voice carried an authority that brooked no argument as he said, "You're all under arrest under suspicion of conspiring to frame someone, the use of illicit substances, as well as attem

A chill ran through me. So, that's how it was.Not just greed for money—but years of jealousy and resentment rooted deep in their souls.Grandma's nurturing and meticulous care for me, along with the assurances she'd left behind so I could have a good life, was an unforgivable sin to them. Not only did they want the money, but they also wanted to use the heart-wrenching tactic of Grandma appearing in my dreams to drive me to ruin. They ensured that I was filled with guilt and hatred for myself. That way, they could take property with a clear conscience, vent their resentment, and maintain the facade of being innocent parents to the public."So," I practically spat out the words through gritted teeth. Each word dripped with anguish. "You repeatedly manipulated me in Grandma's name. You made me believe I slandered my father, hurt my mother, killed James, and was judged by Grandma."You did all this to break my spirit and drive me to suicide? That way, you could claim Grandma's inhe

The more I spoke, the clearer everything became, and the more my heart ached."As for those locusts… I personally ensured that no locusts could breed on our farm by cleaning out the eggs. Why was only our farm affected? You secretly scattered eggs while I was asleep, didn't you?"To make it convincing, to make me believe you, and to drive me to desperation, you went as far as to destroy your own harvest? Half a year's worth of sweat and toil?"I stared at Dad's face. That simple, weathered face of a farmer now seemed like that of a complete stranger."Even the cruelest beast won't devour its own young, but your cruelty knows no bounds."Under my barrage of questions, he abruptly opened his eyes. Gone was the usual love and sorrow I could find there. What was left was shock, panic, and a hint of that ruthlessness at having his mask stripped away so publicly. His voice was hoarse and filled with resentment as he asked, "How did you find out?""I'm not blind anymore!" I replied, pr

The words I was going to say to stop Anna died on my lips, and my gaze toward Mom turned icy. "Go on, then, Mrs. Larson. Kill her."Suddenly, everything clicked into place. My heart felt like it was being clenched in an icy grip. Then, it burned like it was on fire.Suddenly, I felt a near-ruthless sense of calm wash over me.Just as Anna, who was seemingly driven mad, lunged at me with the knife, I made a move that caught everyone off guard. I didn't back down or beg for mercy. Instead, I swiftly reached out and shoved Mom, who was in front of me, right into the path of the blade."Mrs. Larson," I said. My voice rang with an icy, lethal calm. "Go ahead. Kill my mother."Time seemed to freeze in that instant.Mom stumbled after being shoved forward, stopping just inches from the tip of the blade. She turned to look at me in terror. She looked bewildered. It was as if she were seeing me for the first time.Anna's hand froze in mid-air. The insanity on her features was replaced b

Why were the police bringing the crate of heroin to our house? To my surprise, when the crate was opened, there was no heroin. Instead, over a dozen gold bars were in the crate."Officers, why is there so much gold?" Dad asked, bewildered. However, as soon as he stepped forward, the police pinned him to the ground and handcuffed him.The sudden turn of events completely stunned me. My first instinct was to rush forward, but the police stopped me."Why are you arresting my father?" I asked."Upon investigation, the box contains stolen gold bars from a heist that happened over a decade ago. They were taken mid-transit. We've also managed to confirm that the mastermind was your grandfather. Your father's guilty expression now proves he was connected too."Just then, the officer, whose name was Shawn Fontaine, gave me a complicated look. "You personally made the call to send your father to jail. His actions will be a stain on your family name and bar you from civil service. Despite
