Chapter 3

Author: Blue Carberry

"You didn't touch it, did you?"

"N-no!" I stammered, my voice shaking. "As soon as I realized something was wrong, I called 911."

He nodded, giving a few quiet instructions to the female officer.

She nodded back and led me to the side, while he stepped away to call the precinct for backup.

"Take it easy," she said gently, pulling out a notepad. "Just tell me what happened from the beginning."

I took a shaky breath, doing my best to lay out the timeline and how I had stumbled upon the hand.

As my disjointed explanation went on, the officer's expression grew increasingly grim.

"You're saying Michael brought this box home on... April Fools' Day?"

"Yes. He loves playing pranks on me. He'd never miss a chance on April Fools'."

"And when did he leave for his business trip?"

"The very next morning."

The two officers exchanged a quick, heavy look.

At that exact moment, my stomach dropped, and a terrifying wave of foreboding washed over me.

"Is there a problem?"

The female officer didn't answer me directly.

Instead, she asked me to show them exactly where the hand had been kept.

They took photos of the closet and strictly warned me not to clean or touch anything else in the house.

During the process, the male officer’s phone rang.

He kept his voice incredibly low as he spoke, but a few fragmented words still managed to drift over to me.

"...Surveillance... nobody... still can't reach him..."

When he hung up, his face was noticeably more severe than before.

"Gina," he said, suddenly using my name. "Are you absolutely certain he brought this home on the night of April first?"

I blinked, caught off guard.

"Yes, I'm certain. He brought it back that night and I even rolled my eyes and called him childish."

The female officer closed her notepad, her eyes fixed on me.

"Our colleagues just checked the security footage from your neighborhood.

“The cameras show that no one entered your house on April first."

My brain went completely numb.

"That’s impossible! Michael comes home every single day. How could the cameras miss him?" I cried out.

"He even brought home groceries for the next day! All the local vendors around here know him!"

Halfway through my outburst, the horrifying reality of what I was saying caught up to me.

If Michael hadn't come home... then who was the person who had stayed with me all night?

The thought hit me like a physical jolt of electricity.

"No... that's impossible... it can't be..."

I began pacing frantically around the living room, babbling incoherently.

I dug my fingernails deep into the back of my hand, tearing the skin until it bled, completely numb to the pain.

The two officers looked at each other, a flicker of doubt and suspicion crossing their eyes.

The female officer stepped forward, gently taking my hands into hers.

"Please, try to calm down. We aren't saying we don't believe you.

“We've already sent a team to contact your husband. Right now, the priority is figuring out…"

The mention of Michael only made me spiral further.

I gripped her hands back with terrifying tight desperation.

"I called him so many times! He wouldn't pick up! And then his phone went dead!

“Is my husband the killer? Did he do this?"

"Mrs. Miller," the male officer interrupted sharply. "You need to calm down."

"How can I calm down?! Where is the person this hand belongs to? Are they dead? Were they murdered? Am I going to be next?"

My knees buckled and I sank to the floor, burying my head in my arms as my entire body convulsed with terror.

Right then, the male officer suddenly extended his phone toward me.

The screen showed an active call.

I recognized the number instantly. It was Michael's.

Then, a sickeningly familiar voice drifted out from the speaker.

"Babe? I'm on my business trip. I was stuck in back-to-back meetings.

“Don't be scared, okay? The officer already told me everything…”

Evan’s face contorted into something monstrous. He was already in the agonizing throes of detox, completely volatile and paranoid. My words acted like a match dropped into a powder keg.I simply turned around and walked out. By the time I reached the elevator, the muffled sound of objects crashing against the walls echoed from behind his door. The drugs were theirs. Their deaths were entirely of their own making.I had merely given them a microscopic shove.---Three days later, the police department issued their official public press release. The investigation into Michael Miller's disappearance was formally closed. His remains had been recovered from an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city and the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Because the primary suspects, Victoria Reid and Evan Miller, were deceased, all criminal charges were legally dropped. The statement was incredibly brief. It noted that Victoria Reid had entered a domestic dispute

The recording snapped shut. An interrogation-room-like silence swept through the very real bedroom.I stood on the balcony, watching the flashing police lights below. Michael’s voice kept echoing in my ears on an endless, mocking loop.“You know what she's like, she doesn't have a job, she doesn't have any friends, she literally won't survive without me.”So, that was who I was to him. All that warmth, all that boyish charm, all that textbook spoiling over the last eight years... It had all been a lie."Gina," Detective Logan called out softly.I turned around, my face entirely devoid of emotion."We recovered another recording from Victoria's phone," she said, tapping the screen. This time, it was Victoria and a different man. The man's voice was raspy, laced with a heavy southern drawl."Sis, I took care of everything. That woman didn't suspect a single thing."Then Victoria's voice said, "Evan, are you absolutely certain she didn't suspect anything?"Evan. My p

Dead? "How did she die?"The technician shook his head. "The scene is still being processed but the preliminary finding is homicide. “The estimated time of death is roughly four to five days ago."Four to five days ago. That would put it at the end of March or the beginning of April. That was exactly around the time Michael supposedly left for his "business trip," and right when the fake Michael came to my house."Detective Logan wants me to bring you over to identify the body. “Also, we ran the guest registration for Room 308 at the motel.""Who was it?""Evan Miller. Michael's brother."Evan. The name hit my brain like a flash of lightning.Michael did have a younger brother, three years his junior. I had only met him twice at our wedding. I heard he had moved down south years ago, fell into a severe drug addiction and the family had completely cut ties with him. Why on earth was he here?Twenty minutes later, the cruiser pulled up outside the Promenade apar

"She maintained close contact with Michael even after her resignation."My heart violently seized. Victoria Reid. I had never heard that name in my life.Detective Vance unlocked her phone, pulled up a photo and slid it over to me. "Do you recognize her?"The photo showed a young woman with long hair cascading over her shoulders. She had a soft, gentle face and a beautiful smile. I shook my head, though my hands were trembling.Detective Logan looked at me, softening her tone slightly. "Gina, what I'm about to say is going to hurt, but you need to brace yourself. “Based on the evidence we currently have, Michael was highly likely having an extramarital affair. “Victoria Reid is the mistress."I opened my mouth but my throat felt completely blocked. An affair?A mistress?Hearing these words come out of Detective Logan's mouth and slam into me felt incredibly surreal. It felt like there was a thick wall between me and reality. It couldn't be true.Eight years.

My face was deathly pale and my eyes were bloodshot. I looked like a ghost. Meanwhile, the real ghost was currently lurking out there in some dark corner. The tech unit quickly returned with their second report."The surveillance footage was definitely tampered with," an analyst named Marcus said, pointing at the screen. On the monitor, the street under my apartment building was completely empty, the timestamp ticking away steadily. "On the surface, it looks seamless, but we analyzed the underlying metadata. The timestamp is a virtual stream overlaid after the fact. “The frame rate of the source file shows clear signs of being rewritten.""Which means..." Detective Logan stared at the screen. "...This video showing nobody entering or leaving was swapped in.""Exactly. And we traced the server logs." Marcus tapped furiously on his keyboard. "Between seven and ten on the night of April first, there was an anomalous remote access log. “The physical location of that IP addr

"The limb belongs to... Michael?"Detective Logan's words struck me like a bolt of lightning, blasting through my skull. My head buzzed violently and the harsh overhead lights bled into a blinding white blur. Then, another realization pierced through my mind like an icicle. That hand had been brutally hacked off. How much pain must Michael have been in?I looked down at my own hands and the sudden memory of the scratch on the imposter's arm flashed before my eyes. Where had that wound come from?A violent wave of nausea surged in my stomach. I covered my mouth, bending over double as dry heaves racked my body. Tears and sweat smeared across my face as I huddled in the chair, trembling uncontrollably.Detective Logan set a paper cup of warm water in front of me, her eyes filled with a deep pity. I forced myself to look up, looking like an absolute wreck."Then... What about my husband? Is he... is he dead?" I choked out. "Then who... who was the person who just answe
