Nyra’s POV

Keiran called my name again.

I felt it like a hook in my spine, sharp, familiar, almost automatic. The old part of me wanted to turn. Wanted to respond. Wanted to be pulled back into what I had always known.

But I didn’t.

I kept walking.

Ronan’s hand stayed around mine, warm and steady, like he was guiding me out of a room full of eyes and into something quieter. The garden doors opened, and the cool night air wrapped around my face like relief. The noise of the hall dulled behind us, replaced by the soft rustle of leaves and the distant hum of music leaking through stone.

I didn’t look back.

If I looked back, I might crumble.

We walked along the garden path where lanterns threw little pools of light onto the ground. The flowers were sleeping, folded into themselves, but the scent still lingered, earthy and sweet, like the night was holding its breath. My heart was still racing from everything inside that hall, from the way Ronan had said my name as if it was a claim. As if

Ronan’s POVI watched my mother’s face change as she realised this wasn’t infatuation. This was decision. This was Alpha.“You have always been stubborn like your father,” she said tightly, voice trembling now. “Your dominance doesn’t help either.”She turned her head away like she didn’t want me to see how deeply this frightened her.“Ingrid will be happy,” she added bitterly. “Now that she knows you won’t be beating her son.”I didn’t react. My mother came closer again, her gaze intense, almost pleading now, as if she could talk me out of myself if she just found the right angle.“You can’t be with that girl, Ronan,” she said. “She will be the cause of your downfall. Forget about winning, Vandwood, even Brooksbridge will reject you. No pack wants a useless Luna. Her beauty is not enough to run a pack beside you.”She stepped closer and took my hand gently, like I was still her boy and not the Alpha everyone feared.“You will get her killed,” she whispered. “For the sake of her safety

Ronan’s POVBy the time I got back to my room, the noise of the banquet was still in my bones. Not the music. Not the laughter. The shift. The way the hall had changed the second I said her name out loud. The way some people laughed like I’d offered them entertainment, and others stared like I’d committed a crime. And Nyra, standing beside me with that quiet, bruised dignity, had looked like she’d been born to be gentle in a world that rewarded sharp teeth.I closed the door behind me, already knowing I wasn’t alone. My mother stood near the window, arms folded, posture rigid with fury. The moonlight caught her hair like silver, and her expression looked carved out of disappointment.I didn’t greet her.I didn’t ask why she was here.I simply loosened my jacket and set it down slowly, because if I moved too fast, my wolf would rise, and this would turn into something uglier than words. Her eyes tracked me like I was a stranger.“Are you out of your mind?” she snapped. “A wolfless mate

Nyra’s POVHe appeared from the shadows like a storm that had been held back too long. His eyes locked onto us immediately, onto me, sitting beside Ronan, my lips still swollen from a kiss that had just rewritten something inside my chest.Charles wasn’t far behind him, moving fast, tense, like he already knew this was about to turn ugly.“You are not to mingle with my people, Ronan,” Keiran said, voice tight with authority he was clinging to.Ronan didn’t answer. He didn’t even look bothered. He just angled his body slightly, subtle, protective, putting himself between me and Keiran without making a show of it.Keiran’s gaze snapped back to me, raw now.“Nyra,” he said, and the way he said my name made my stomach twist. Fear and desperation were threaded through his voice like he couldn’t separate them. Like he didn’t know which one was winning. “He wants to get you killed, can’t you see?”His eyes pleaded with me to stand. To leave Ronan’s side. To go back to where Keiran could keep

Nyra’s POVHis gaze flicked to me, and in that split second I saw it: he hadn’t been thinking of how vicious Vandwood could be. He’d been thinking of tradition. Of challenge. Of proving something. Not of me being hurt.Alpha Ethan seized that pause. “If you are choosing Nyra Moonchild to stand beside you for this challenge,” he said slowly, “then we will have to waive the strength test between both prospective Lunas.”I felt the room shift. Not relief. Disgust. The kind of disgust that pretended to be “fairness.”And I knew exactly what Ethan was doing.Even if we won everything else, the pack would still say Keiran deserved it more because he had a Luna who could stand in a fight. Because no one wanted a “weak Luna.” Because the idea of me in that role made them laugh. He was tilting the board. Not overtly. Not in a way anyone could accuse him of. But enough. My throat burned.I finally forced myself to speak, even though my voice came out thin. “You should choose some

Nyra’s POVAlpha Ethan’s frown deepened the way a storm thickened before it broke. So did Elara’s.The two of them looked at Ronan like he’d spoken in a language they didn’t recognise, like they’d expected arrogance, maybe rebellion, but not this. Not a claim that dragged an Omega into the centre of Vandwood’s traditions.“Here?” Alpha Ethan asked, voice clipped.Ronan didn’t hesitate. “Yes,” he said. Then, as if he wanted the entire hall to hear the name and choke on it, he added, “Miss Nyra Moonchild.”And he pulled me closer. Not behind him. Not half-hidden. Closer. My stomach dropped so hard I felt it in my knees. The hall erupted. Some people laughed openly. Others murmured the way wolves did when they scented blood in the air, excited, offended, entertained. I heard a few words snap through the noise like whips.“Moonchild?” “An Omega?” “Elaine’s daughter?”Even Alpha Ethan’s mouth tightened, displeasure hardening into something like disbelief.“Son,” he began, and
