Two weeks have passed since the warm but awkward meeting between Josh, Ashley, and their two moms. Many things have changed since then. The wounds on Ashley's body are slowly healing, both physically and mentally. Mrs. Kim finally declared Ashley healthy, and the news brought a wave of new plans-including the long-delayed honeymoon.
Josh's mom, with her typical enthusiasm, decided to give a special gift: a honeymoon trip to Paris. Everything was organized in perfect detail, from the first-class flight to the luxurious hotel overlooking the Seine River. Ashley herself could hardly believe it was all happening so fast. But, on the other side of the city, Josh faced a more complicated dilemma.
The night before departure, Josh sat in his car, staring at his phone screen that displayed Sharon's name. He took a deep breath before finally pressing the call button.
When Sharon picked up, Josh could almost feel the anger simmering from the other side of the line, even before a word was spoken.
“Why are you telling me this now?!” exclaimed Sharon, her voice sharp with disappointment.
Josh rubbed his tired face. "I'm sorry, honey. I... I don't know where to start. It's all too soon. I couldn't resist either."
Sharon was silent for a while, then her voice sounded colder. “Then you have to make it up to me tonight.”
“What do you want?” asked Josh, almost in a whisper.
"I want you to come to my apartment. Now. Bring all the branded stuff you promised. And... that diamond too."
Josh nodded even though Sharon couldn't see him. "Okay. I'll be there."
That night, Sharon's apartment was filled with the delicate scent of aromatherapy candles. Sharon stood there, wearing a dark red sheer silk dress, her eyes shining with emotion. A mixture of anger, desire, and the need to own Josh completely.
Josh approached, handing over the grocery bags containing the bags, shoes, and small box of diamonds he had bought in a hurry. Sharon took it without so much as a word, just letting out a long sigh as she gave Josh a deep, penetrating look.
“I don't need all this,” Sharon muttered, setting the expensive bags down on the sofa without looking at their contents. “I just need you tonight.”
Josh approached her, tracing the lines of Sharon's face gently. There was guilt settling in his chest, but more than that, there was pity. He knew all too well how much Sharon loved him... and how fragile she was when it came to letting him go, even temporarily.
They spent the night in long embraces, in kisses that seemed to erase the distance that would soon be created. Sharon led Josh to completely indulge her. She wanted every touch, every breath, to be a memory that was deeply imprinted in Josh's mind.
They shared that night not only with passion, but also with the fear of loss. Sharon demanded more hugs, more pecking on the forehead, on the cheeks, on the fingertips, as if then she could seal Josh to herself.
Josh complied with everything. Stroking Sharon's hair, holding her close, whispering soft promises in her ear even though her heart was filled with doubts. They both gave each other everything, in silence full of sighs, in trembling bodies that melted into warmth.
As the night wore on, Sharon never let Josh out of her arms. Again and again she touched the man's face, memorizing every curve, hoping her memory was strong enough to withstand the longing that would come.
"I love you..." Sharon whispered softly through the drowsiness.
Josh just closed his eyes, hugging her tighter. The words hung in the air, heavy and real, yet Josh was too cowardly to answer with honesty.
Morning came too soon.
The first rays of sunlight filtered through the thin curtains of the apartment, caressing Josh's sleeping body on Sharon's bed. The alarm clock on his phone went off, reminding him that their time was up.
Josh woke up with a heavy head. His body felt tired, his muscles aching after a long night without any real sleep.
He turned his head, looking at Sharon who was still sleeping peacefully by his side, her face as peaceful as a child's.
For a moment, Josh allowed himself to savor the sight-seconds of calm before everything fell apart again.
But he couldn't delay any longer.
Carefully, Josh got up, put on his clothes, and stroked Sharon's hair once more. “I'll be back,” he whispered, though he wasn't sure when he could keep that promise.
A few hours later, Josh arrived home with the suitcase he hadn't had time to prepare since last night. Ashley was waiting for him in the living room, her face looking calm but her eyes watching Josh's every move.
“Sorry, I overslept,” Josh said, trying to sound casual.
Ashley just smiled a little. "It's okay. We still have time."
They left for the airport with the family driver driving. In the car, Josh glanced at Ashley several times. The girl seemed calm, looking out the window with an unpredictable expression.
Josh had his cell phone in his pocket, almost tempted to text Sharon. But he knew better than to. Everything was already complicated enough.
Ashley suddenly said, as if reading his mind, “You don't have to feel guilty.”
Josh turned his head, looking at her. “I... don't know what you mean.”
Ashley smiled faintly, as if she knew more than she showed. "You're only human, Josh. Just like me. We all have our own ways of surviving."
Josh didn't know what to answer.
The car sped through the city streets, heading towards the international airport that would take them to Paris. To a new world, to a new beginning-or at least, that's what everyone expected.
In his heart, Josh wondered: could he really start from scratch, when his past was still shackled so tightly?
And on the other hand, Ashley also silently asks: can she survive in this world built on lies?
They stepped into the departure terminal, their suitcases rolling behind them, and the morning sun highlighted their long shadows on the marble floor. A new journey begins-with old wounds that haven't fully healed.
But as Ashley said earlier, they were only human. And perhaps, that was enough for now.
Josh frowned. He realized there was sarcasm hidden behind the girl's words even though the way of speaking caught by his ears had absolutely no hint of annoyance or anger. He didn't know what Ashley was really hiding. Either the girl was no longer angry because she knew the limits of their relationship. Or, she was completely ignoring him.Their relationship deteriorated after the trip from Paris. And it got worse when his accidental encounter with Ashley's mother happened. Then it got even worse when he broke the appointment with Ashley's parents, and didn't come back at all until today. Without giving any information.Josh did say that he had some business that required him to go out of town. But he couldn't even be sure whether Ashley believed him, or maybe not.Either way, the worst thing Josh had done was to lie and never give any news after that.“Are you angry? Because I didn't come home?”Ashley snorted with a laugh, “No.”Then the elevator doors in front of them opened.Ashle
After stopping by his parents' house to pick up the gift that his mother had prepared, Josh returned to his house. He was quite thankful that his mom was taking care of a charity so he didn't have to meet her. Tonight he needed to repair his reputation in front of Ashley's parents. And that would take up a lot of his energy and mind. Therefore, not meeting his own mother was a huge blessing for him. Because Josh could eliminate one cause of his confusion, and make his burden a little lighter.Josh was waiting for the elevator when Ashley walked up from behind him with the same destination. The girl looked a little surprised when Josh turned his head and made their eyes meet each other accidentally. It seems like Ashley didn't realize before that the figure standing in front of the elevator was Josh.Awkwardness suddenly ambushed the empty space between Ashley and Josh. Ashley looked away, and Josh still turned to look at her but with a confused feeling.Ashley didn't expect that she
Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his
There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be
At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S
PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h
Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because
Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f
Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h
