Chapter 1

"Sir. You may begin."

The butler pulled the red silk off the wheel.

The face of the wheel held thirty-six letters. Each letter went with a name.

Jordan Sutton stepped toward it. I cut him off.

"Wait!"

All eyes turned.

In that moment, I understood.

I had been given a second chance.

In my previous life, I had been chosen. And on my wedding day… I was reduced to something less than human.

This time, I would not repeat the same fate.

I walked straight to the wheel and tore off the slip marked with my letter–A.

The room fell silent in shock.

"Is she insane?"

"That's one less competitor–our chances just improved!"

"But the young master clearly favors someone else. Marrying into that… do you think it'll end well?"

The thirty-five other women on the wheel were whispering to each other.

The other girls whispered among themselves.

I did not care.

I calmly tore the slip in my hand to pieces and dropped it into the trash.

Jordan let out a short laugh. "Naomi… are you looking for death?"

He came toward me. He was tall. He used it.

I did not move. I knew who was about to walk in.

Valerie Cooper. The woman he had been carrying in his head for fifteen years.

Valerie was the daughter of his father's second wife. His foster sister, on paper. Anyone could see what was wrong with that. Whatever Jordan was about to do with the wheel was a play to push her past her own line.

The doorway filled.

"Jordan." The voice cracked. "Are you really getting married?"

The room turned again.

Valerie was wearing a white dress. Her eyes were red. The chin was set in defiance.

Jordan crossed to her in three strides.

"Valerie. I'm sorry. Don't cry."

He pulled her in. He spoke into her hair.

"You know who I love.

"You know what I'm doing this for, don't you?"

He smoothed her hair back from her face.

She did not answer. She just kept crying.

He gripped her shoulders. "Valerie. Tell me. Do you love me?"

Her eyes slid past him to me.

"Naomi. You and Jordan grew up together. You and he will be very happy."

I went still.

Childhood friends.

That was true.

I met him when I was five. His mother had just passed away, and he stopped speaking from the shock. I stayed by his side every day, trying everything I could to make him smile.

Ten months later, he finally spoke again.

"Naomi, you're so good to me. When I grow up, I'm going to marry you."

He had been after me ever since. Everyone had thought he was head over heels.

I had thought so too.

Until he was seventeen, and the stepmother brought Valerie into the house.

Everything changed.

I let the corner of my mouth lift.

"Valerie. You have it wrong. Jordan and I are old friends. That's all."

I held her eyes for a beat.

I paused, then shifted my gaze to him.

"And besides…

"I already have someone I like."

"Jordan, you really are pathetic–played like a dog by a woman like that."The words echoed in his ears. His eyes reddened. He was the heir of one of the most powerful families in the city… and yet he had been completely manipulated by a woman like her.Thinking of Valerie's flawless act earlier, regret hit him even harder."Naomi must have suffered a lot because of you."He looked up at Valerie, his voice hoarse."Aren't you afraid I'll hate you for this?"Valerie did not care."Doesn't matter. All I want is the title of Mrs. Sutton–and the money."Everything else means nothing."Jordan froze.Ever since he met her, she had always seemed gentle, sweet, and kind. Now he understood. That had all been an act. This was who she really was.A wave of disgust rose in him.The thought of marrying her next month was unbearable. He turned and walked straight out of the bedroom. He was going to bring Naomi back.He used every connection, spent whatever it took, and finally tra

"Jordan… why is everyone so harsh on me?"I only hugged you, kissed you. I didn't do anything else. Why are they treating me like this?"A flash of resentment crossed her eyes."Even my father says I seduced you."Fine. Then I'll make it real."I want to see whether, after I give birth to your child, he'll still refuse to acknowledge him."She began pulling his clothes off.Jordan panicked. He struggled, but it was useless. As the drug took effect, heat spread through his body.Looking at her, his gaze slowly lost focus."Naomi… you're back."Naomi… do you know how much I've missed you?"He murmured, pulling her tightly into his arms.…The next morning, he woke to a scream. He turned toward the sound–and froze. She was sitting beside him, unclothed. All drowsiness vanished."What are you doing here?!"He shouted instinctively, grabbing a blanket and throwing it to her.At that moment, the door burst open.Mr. Sutton rushed in, followed by his wife.Seeing the sc

At the same time, in Maple Country. The moment I landed, I followed my advisor and the rest of the project team straight into the lab. This project had been decided three years ago. Back then, my advisor had invited me to join.I had been tempted–but I chose to stay for Jordan.I did not expect what I would get in return… to be hurt.Even Adam…Thinking of the day he died, my eyes stung."Naomi, come here for a moment."My advisor's voice pulled me back. I quickly wiped my eyes and hurried over."Naomi, this is my senior student, Travis Hawke. He hasn't been in the country much–he's been recovering here, so you two haven't met."I nodded and reached out my hand. "Nice to meet you.""I'd heard a smart junior would be joining us. I just didn't expect…"He paused. My advisor raised an eyebrow. "Didn't expect what?"Travis smiled faintly. "Didn't expect her to be this beautiful as well."I froze for a moment.Seeing my reaction, he added lightly, "You looked a little down.

"How can the heir be with his foster sister? That's disgusting!""On his father's birthday, no less–what kind of family is this?""He doesn't even spare his own sister? Shameless."The crowd spoke without restraint, their eyes full of contempt and disgust as they looked at Jordan and Valerie.Mr. Sutton's face turned ashen with anger, and he began coughing violently.Jordan shot to his feet.He rushed toward the screen, trying to shut it off, but froze when the next video started playing."I did it on purpose. I made sure your brother went through the procedure. I wanted him dead."You pathetic little thing. What makes you think you deserve Jordan's attention?"Don't even think about telling anyone. Jordan would never believe you."In the video, Valerie's face was twisted with malice as she slapped me again and again.Jordan stood there, stunned. He turned to her slowly, disbelief written all over his face."Valerie… didn't you tell me that procedure would help him?"Vale

My hand loosened. I collapsed onto the floor, blood streaming down my forehead."Valerie, are you okay?"I'm sorry I came late."Jordan reached out, checking the bruises around Valerie's neck, his voice trembling."Jordan… I almost didn't get to see you again."Tears streamed down her face."Naomi… Naomi told me to persuade you to donate bone marrow to her brother. I was worried it would affect your health, so I refused… and she tried to kill me!"I was so scared…"She clung tightly to his waist, trembling like a frightened animal."Naomi! Have you lost your mind?!"His eyes locked onto me."Whether I donate or not is my decision. What right did you have to hurt Valerie?"His voice was full of anger. The disgust in his eyes was unmistakable.I looked up at him. A faint, mocking smile tugged at my lips."You're pitiful."He froze."What… did you say?"I slowed my voice deliberately, enunciating every word."I said–you're pitiful. To be played so easily by a vicious wom

I ran toward the operating room.Adam lay there, completely still. His face was drained of all color.Panic hit me all at once.I saw the prepared bone marrow beside the equipment and dropped to my knees in front of the doctor."Please… save my brother."I bowed my head to the ground again and again. The doctor could not bear to look at me."It's not that I won't save him… the donor hasn't arrived.""Without a matching transplant, there's nothing I can do."My chest tightened."Then find one! Check the registry–match someone!"I got to my feet and grabbed his arm, my voice trembling."As long as there's a donor, I'll pay anything. Whatever it takes."The doctor didn't respond. He only let out a heavy sigh.At that moment, the heart monitor suddenly began to spike–rapid, erratic. The doctor's expression changed instantly."Quick–cardiac stimulants!"Several nurses rushed in. However, before the needle could even touch Adam, the line on the monitor went flat. The doct
