Chapter 01

Lily's POV.

"So the next question is going to be for five extra marks to your grades", the teacher announced.

I looked around. No one matched my level of excitement.

Nobody really cared actually, but this was what got me excited.

I was an overlooked, weird Omega who wasn't good at anything. The only thing I knew was academics, so I couldn't be blamed for being this hyped right now.

"Who was the first Alpha to bring back the head of our rival Alpha as a sign of battle victory."

Easy peasy.

I raised my hands high in the air, but the teacher's eyes intentionally avoided mine.

"Lily has been the only one answering questions for the past ten minutes, in a class of 25 students. Can anyone else answer the question?", he politely asked.

The whole class gave him no response.

"At least try. Give it a shot for goodness sake", he groaned in frustration.

No one said a word back to him. Instead, someone popped a gum at the back.

He sighed in surrender and came back to me.

"Lily, please educate the whole class."

I got up from my seat and cleared my throat.

"The first Alpha to bring back the head of the Alpha of a rival pack from war was Alpha Aiden Wellington. He was the first man from the Wellington lineage to lead us, his reign changing the landscape of Dark Shades pack forever. His son, the current Alpha of the pack, has brought back 6 six heads from the past seven wars, making the pack close to untouchable."

The teacher stared at me with satisfaction.

"There are two things I wish for," he said. "First, I wish you were my daughter, so I could brag about how smart you are."

"Secondly, I wish everyone in this classroom could be half as good as you, especially Ivan ...", He shot a glare at the most unserious student in the class. "... who spends his time talking in class or serving detention when he actually needs the five extra marks more than you do."

Damn.

I felt a sense of worry as the teacher kept on reprimanding him and comparing him to me. He thought he was doing something good, but I knew it was going to have a ripple effect on me.

The class managed to go on until the bell rang, signifying the end of the period.

It was break time, so everyone found their way to the reception area.

"I don't know how you manage to get every single question", Sonia said as she settled down beside me with her tray of food. "But the teacher was right. I honestly wish I could be just like you."

"Well, it's not that big a deal", I muttered to my best friend.

"You're literally reading in the cafeteria", she gestured at the book lying in front of me. "Of course it's not a deal for you. People envy you"

"If only they knew."

"Knew what?"

I sighed and gently took off my heavy, round glasses.

"Look at everyone sitting here. They're either laughing with the circle of friends, or being fed by their other half. I have no other friends apart from you and Mark. No man has asked me to be his girlfriend, in my entire life. The only thing I know is books. You think if I had the chance to trade my nerdy life for a night as a normal, likeable person, I wouldn't do so?"

"That's nonsense. You're a very beautiful lady with a beautiful brain and a beautiful mind-"

"Beautiful, my foot."

I suddenly saw a shadow grow over our table from behind me.

We turned over our shoulders to see Ivan the school bully with three of his friends surrounding our table.

I swallowed hard and looked away immediately, fear gripping my soul.

I knew this was going to happen.

Ivan was a bully who got away with everything because he knew his father owned most of the shares of the school.

"In my humble opinion, I think Lily and beautiful shouldn't be put in the same sentence", he said and his other friends laughed at his joke.

"Well, no one asked for it so why don't you keep it to yourself?"

"I can't blame you. Birds of the same feather flock together. The only thing your friend knows how to do is answer stupid history questions just to make me look stupid."

"Well, that wasn't her intention. If it hurts you, it's probably because the teacher said the truth when he called you dunce."

"He's not talking to you!" His friend roared at Sonia.

"I wasn't talking to you dunces either."

I couldn't see their faces, but I could tell they were livid. I held Sonia's leg to calm her down, but she freed herself.

"I'm not going to allow this bitch annoy me because today's a good day", Ivan sighed. "I just came here to warn you not to answer a single question so far. I'm in that class except you're craving trouble. It's funny how you're an expert in annoying the fuck out of someone when you're just a nobody. You're nothing but a nerdy, classless, ugly, hopeless Omega who nobody would ever fall in love with."

It stung more when his friends laughed at me, but it wasn't funny to Sonia.

Before I could stop her, she sprang up to her feet and landed a resounding slap on Ivan's face, creating a haunting silence throughout the cafeteria.

Fuck.

I was used to being insulted. This wasn't my first time being bullied. From experience, I knew that the best way for this to end was by being silent.

Sonia had just fucked me up.

"You just slapped Malcolm Ivan?!! How dare you?!!", His friend screamed at her.

"And I'll give him another one if he calls us names again!!"

"You useless bitch! I'll teach you a lesson!"

The whole cafeteria erupted in chaos as the fight ensued between Sonia and Ivan's man. Before panic stood me to calm the tension, Ivan's other friend picked me up and manhandled me in the worst of ways until I could move anymore.

"Let me go!! Let me go now, you pussy!", Sonia yelled and struggled to get out of his grip, but it was futile.

Ivan turned to me, his cold eyes sending chills down my spine.

"You see, it's one thing to stupid. And it's another thing to be daring. And it's one thing to be a stupid and daring", he muttered as he pranced towards me. "I'll teach you how to know your place today."

He raised his hand high in the air, and  winced at the hot pain I felt was about to feel.

I expected a dumbing ache in a second's time, but I didn't feel anything...

I opened one eye to understand what was going on.

I opened both eyes in surprise.

I saw his hand stopped midair by the only guy who could afford to be around me.

Mark...

"Didn't your mother teach you not to touch women?"

"Who the fuck is-"

Mark immediately turned him around and headbutted him before he could defend himself, sending him straight to the ground with a boil.

"This fucker!"

The two guys charged at Mark at once but he dodged both of them when they tried to catch him.

He pushed one of them over the table, slamming him multiple times on my pudding.

Before the other guy could get a grasp of him, Mark kicked him hard in the balls.

He fell to the ground wailing brutally with his hands on his nuts.

I saw Mark clean the dust off himself and approached me with concern in his eyes.

"Are you okay, Lily?"

"I'm fine. Just some bruises", I answered in a faint voice.

I hated being the center of attraction.

"Are you sure?"

"Uhm, hello! I was also in the mix!", Sonia hissed.

I caught Mark rolling his eyes.

"Let me take you ladies to the school nurse to have you checked. Then we'll report this bastard to the princi…"

"Everyone!! The prince is here!!", A girl screamed like her life depended on it.

I was grateful, as all of a sudden, the attention shifted from us to my crush.

I'd always fantasized about Prince Joe since middle school.

Dreaming about him kissing me and calling me his,  had become a normalcy. Unfortunately, it was the closest thing to having him.

He was a premium Casanova who used his privileges to the best of his advantage. He only went for the most beautiful and classiest girls in the pack.

Not a nerdy, classless, ugly and hopeless Omega like me.

Girls kept screaming and fainting as he walked past them to his current, beautiful item.

He took her hand like a gentleman, causing her to blush.

They walked past me hand in hand, without even noticing me.

I sighed.

I probably didn't even exist in his head.

"Lily", Mark tugged at me to get back my attention. "Are we not going to the school nurse?”

Chapter 27Lily's POVAs I stepped out of the room, I felt like a complete idiot. I didn’t know why I had even tried to talk to Joe. What was I expecting, that he’d suddenly open up, pour his soul out, and we’d magically fix whatever was broken between us?I scoffed to myself.Even though no one was saying it out loud, whispers of Joe’s father’s declining health had been floating all around the pack. The rumor mill had been working overtime. People were already treating Joe like the next Alpha. But I couldn’t bring myself to think of it that lightly.I didn’t want gossip. I wanted to talk to him. To see how he was holding up.The night before, I had barely slept. My thoughts kept circling back to him, I imagined the way his hands trembled, the strange look in his eyes. Something had been off. And today, I thought maybe…just maybe…I’d get the chance to check in. After class, I stayed back deliberately, when it was just the two of us in that room, I was about to take that chance. But of

Chapter 26Joe's POVI roll my eyes so hard I think I might actually go blind. "I'm not ready for this conversation, Ivan," I mutter, already walking toward the window for some air.I doubled over in mock agony as Ivan’s stern voice echoed in the throne room. “We need to discuss your future, Joe.”I straightened and rolled my eyes. “Uncle, can this wait? I’m not in the headspace for a… matchmaking session.”Ivan didn’t budge, but his lips twitched. “You will prepare yourself now, because your future wife is outside that door.”I laugh. “Ha! You’re bluffing.”But the door swung open. And in walked Perseus Ironwolf, one of the most powerful men in the wolf realm. My shoulders stiffen as soon as I see him. He’s got this commanding presence that makes even the walls feel like they should stand straighter. Beside him is his daughter, Jane. She was stunning, had this strange confidence about her, a pair of intelligent eyes that scanned me in a way that’s too calm, too calculated. She was

Chapter 25 Joe's POV I stared at them in disbelief, my mouth slightly open but no words coming out. The royal council had just told me I was to be crowned Alpha. Me. Now. "He's not dead," I finally blurted out, my voice thick. "He's not dead, and you're already talking like he won’t wake up." Ivan placed a firm hand on my shoulder. "And we pray he does. But the throne cannot remain empty, Joe. You’re the next in line. This is not a choice. It’s a duty." Lady Sienna, one of the elders leaned forward. “With all due respect, Your Majesty, an empty throne is an abomination for the Pack. The Council decreed it two centuries ago. Beyond that, your father’s condition is critical. He would want the Kingdom stable, under your effective command.” I looked around at the elders seated in the throne room, their faces impassive, expectant. This wasn’t a discussion. It was a decree. "The pressure... it's too much,i…I…" I murmured, running a hand through my hair. My chest felt like it wa

Chapter 24Joe's POV.I jolted awake to the frantic pounding on my bedroom door.“Prince Joe! "It’s urgent!” shouted Connor, my personal guide and aide-de-camp. My heart slammed against my ribs, the word ‘urgent’ never meant a good thing.I threw off the covers and sprinted down the corridor, my bare feet slapping on marble. “What is it?” I barked as I burst into the grand throne room. Inside, Palace Guards and the royal physician hovered around the dais. My father, Alpha King Aiden Wellington, lay sprawled on the floor behind the throne, unresponsive.“Your Majesty!” one guard knelt, checking for a pulse. “His heart is barely beating, it's very faint.”"He's not waking up."My father. The King. The Alpha. We'd always been at odds. Every word exchanged between us came with tension, sometimes even venom. But despite everything, the thought of him not waking up? It cut through me like ice."Everybody out," I barked, and they all scattered without a word.I walked to the massive throne a

Chapter 23Lily’s POV.I fought my way through the crowded living room, the thrum of music vibrating up through my heels. Wherever Sonia was, I needed to find her, but I felt too unmoored to care. My wolf snarled in my chest, furious at me for rejecting my true mate.“You need to calm the fuck down,” I whispered under my breath as I finally broke through the bodies and into the balcony’s cooler air. The silence is bliss, but my thoughts are anything but quiet.“You can’t keep pushing him away,” my wolf growls back.“You mean Joe,” I answer bitterly, my hands gripping the railing. “Mark is my mate.”I slipped out onto the balcony. The night air hit me coolly, and I pressed my forehead against the railing, trying to steady my racing heart. Stars flickered above the city skyline, but I felt anything but calm.A muffled stumble behind me made me turn. Mark, his face flushed, his shirt untucked, he leaned against the doorframe.“Hey baby!” he slurred, stepping forward. “There you are!” He

Chapter 22Lily's POV.The music is thumping through the walls as I step off the dance floor, my face flushed and hands trembling. Mark’s friends crowd around him, their shouts and whoops fueling his already glowing ego.I smiled weakly as Mark’s friends surrounded us in a tight cluster, clapping him on the back.“Man, you’ve got it made,” Tyler said, grinning. “Look at you, so deep in love, it’s inspiring.”“Seriously,” Mason added. “You’re practically glowing.”Mark beamed, his arm around my waist. “Thanks, guys.” He turned to me. “Shall we get another drink?”I nodded, forcing a smile, though my heart felt heavy. The dance floor sparkled behind us, couples swaying to a slow ballad, and laughter rose above the music. I knew Mark was right here, holding me, but my thoughts drifted back to earlier today in the locker room.I excused myself. “Be right back.”I give him a quick smile, but my feet are already carrying me toward the bathroom.Once inside, I leaned against the door and let
