Dora the Senior Master put her pen down yet again, she was tasked with writing Mia’s progress report for the year to send it off to a destination she will never see, to a person she had no idea about. This would be her 19th report, of which she was unsure if her reports contained the required information or if they were of any use to the person on the other end receiving them. Like clockwork every year, she received a request for the update on Mia and a generous number of coins to cover her keep for another year.
Mia wasn’t like the other children brought to be trained in the balance of Planet S610. She was much younger that the others, brought here when she was only 5 months old baby. The other children delivered here are much older, aged 8 to 13 normally, orphans with no family to care for them. Most starving and glad to be here with regular meals and clean clothes and Masters to teach and care for them.
Mia was also different in the fact that, someone out there still knew of her existence.
Their home planet was volatile at best and need careful management to remain in place, it wasn’t a big planet or important but it was part of the solar system and if it self-destructed it would throw all the other important planets out of their perfect cycles. The Elite differed in opinion on what exactly what would happen if it did indeed explode but they all agreed it would change everything for the whole solar system & therefore a maintenance quarters and expensive works have been carried out. Every planet, seven in all, contributing to its funding and staffing. There were four Masters and at present thirteen trainees or children ranging from 8 to 20.
The maintenance of the planet wasn’t hard or even demanding, but it was necessary. Actually, it only took three trainees three hours a day to monitor all the valves on the three runs across the planet. But living so remotely the first Masters decided that all the Trainees should have an education with emphasis on medical knowledge and defending the planet if indeed it was ever attacked. So most of their time was spent teaching the trainees, which Dora found was what she enjoyed most.
When a trainee reached the age of ten and had completed the necessary level courses they began to receive an income. The income stepped up each year. When the turned eighteen they had the choice to stay on at PlanetS610 or they could choose to return to civilisation. Most Trainees stayed to earn enough money to make a start for themselves but eventually all the trainees choose to go back because they remembered their planets and life they had been born into, but it was a daunting journey. Mia though, had no memories of any other planet but this one. It weighed heavy on Dora that she could not prepare her for the wider world. Mia would have to go back, no question about it, this isn’t a life for anyone. Especially Mia, a bright, happy but fiery girl, she deserved a chance at so much more. A sigh escaped her lips, Mia had decided to stay on so far but her 20th Birthday was coming up and not many stayed after that. Dora pushed it from her mind and put her focus back on the empty paper Infront of her. She need to have this done before the supply ship arrived in the morning, their only physical connection to the outside world.
Day 1
Planet Ziion
Rota slipped the papers into the sleeve of her gown, her mind roiling with what she had just read. She beckoned her closest friends Shimel & Lacy to come quick as they slipped out of her former Nanny, Elsbeth’s room. She had gone there for peace or to find some respite from her grief. Eslbeth was like a mother to her Rota, since her own mother hadn’t survived her birth. But Elsbeth passed away recently and then just this morning her Father King Levis had just been shot with a laser by an assassin. He was rushed to the Medi ward and she was waiting on news to see if he would survive.
She did not expect what she found in her nanny’s room, she was staring at the framed painting that always hung above Elsbeth’s dresser, it was familiar and soother her a little bit inside when she realised it wasn’t exactly the way she remembered it. She as a child had spent many hours staring at the foreign landscape, that was from her Nanny’s former planet. They had even played “eye spy” with the painting, she knew every paint brush stroke. But this was different, there was a royal crest added in the grass in just a shade lighter and in the clouds there were darker grey swirls than what had been there previously. As her focus drifted looking for more changes, she noticed that the swirls made words. She gasp, she could make out her name “Rota”. Her too friends worriedly hurried to her side. “What is it?” asked Shimel.
“This painting is different. . . I see my . . . name . . . Here.” She traced the word with her finger and there are more words, Rota’s finger traced out “peekaboo” and “find her” she closed her eyes and opened them again, yep certainly those words appeared again, then in the grass she noticed short strokes that made out “love Bet” That was what she called Elsbeth when she was little because she couldn’t pronounce her name properly.
It hit her then, there was a message left for her in this painting. She looked at the other words “peekaboo” and “find her” what did they mean . . . Peekaboo was a kids game she hadn’t played in years and find her or find me? It didn’t make sense. Then a memory flashed of Elsbeth playing peekaboo with her when she was about 4. Elsbeth used to say “Peekaboo, I’m behind you” half a chocked laugh made it out of her mouth as the happy times and then sadness flooded her again. Behind, the word behind came back. She quickly glanced around the room. It was so clean and tidy like it always was, nowhere to hide anything in such a sparse furnished room. Her eyes glanced back to the painting. “Lacy, watch the door” Rota ordered and before she could re-think she grabbed the painting off the wall, she turned it over, there was something stuck to the back of the painting, like a big sticker or contact, she peeled it back carefully and a big fat envelope fell down making her jump.
She pressed the painting into Shimel’s hands and quickly picked up the letter, sliding her finger under the wax seal she pulled its contents out. The first page was addressed to her in Elsbeth’s own hand.
She quickly read the letter, now as she hurried walked down the hall her mind just flicking over the important words and phrases. Your birth . .. . . mother died . . . twins . . . sister . . . safe. . .find her.
The other pages looked more like fields reports and logs so she hurriedly put them back in the letter and made her escape. Her friends following loyally without asking questions. As she rounded the corner of the hall, she almost collided with 3 guards coming the other way, she didn’t really know their names but she knew that they would have been guarding her father if he wasn’t being operated on right now.
“Have you heard anything” she questioned
They snapped to attention backs to the wall.
“No sorry, Princess Rota” one of the men informed her
She started up walking again absently heading towards her apartments.
She and her small entourage had just turned the corner into the next corridor when they heard running steps approaching from behind. Rota’s heart started racing as she thought of how an attempt had been made on her father’s life, could she also be at risk. She felt her frineds fall closer in behind her. She was again reminded how glad she was for their company.
The footsteps were getting closer.
Then Rota head a voice. “Wait, Princess”She turned to find two of the guards running after her.“Sorry for the intrusion” said the first male guard, coming to stop in front of them with a bow of his head. He was obviously the leader of this detachment. She acknowledged him with a smile“You shouldn’t be unprotected, have you had a guard assigned to you?” he saidRota shocked by this suggestion replied “no, but I am inside the palace. Surely I don’t need . . . “Her voice drifted off as earlier events surfaced“Normally, no it wouldn’t be necessary. We will protect you until a guard is assigned. We would normally be with your father . . .” he paused re- thinking his words “but he doesn’t require our services . . . at the moment” He finished“Were you on his detail when . . . it happened” Rota’s voice waivered a bit.
“I’ll need to call in my finding to my superior, Kat can you”Kat’s reply came even before he had finished “Yep”Jay headed up the hall out of earshot pulling his com screen from his pocket, he clicked on his superior’s secured line and was greeted with “Jay report!”“Did corporal Gus, report to you? Have you seen our preliminary?”“Negative”Confused Jay continued “I sent Corporal Gus back to you almost 20mins ago, he should have that document in your hand by now,”“You fill me in, I need something to go on now! and your explanation will be better than any report”Jay quickly brought him up to speed, filling him in on his gut feeling about the assignation attempt, the princess’s safety and the listening devices discovered in her private apartments. He also requested to have his team be delegated to the princess’s protecti
The princesses eye widened as they shot to his “Con con cea ling” she stammered“Yes” Jay’s voice was gentle but firm “Will you trust me?” and he gestured to her sleeve. The princess remained quiet for a little bit then gave the women quick glances, they all seemed to come to the same conclusion without words.Rota’s voice came out clear and resolved “I know, who you are Captain Jay, at least what your service record says, you impressed my father, you know. You are to date, the only guard the King himself requested to be on his protection. It was him who transferred you from the military to the guard and at his request you be made captain straight away. You got the highest scores in all your practical exams and still hold most of the shooting records. You alone have complete 2/3 of all the electives available to you in the Military and are probably more qualified than most Generals. Your team under you are co
Mia woke, stretching as smile played on her lips even before she open her eyes, she secretly loved this time of morning, waking up a few minutes before the day bell. She would snuggle down in her warm bed, wrap her covers around her tighter and enjoy the feel of it.She let her mind prepare for today’s activities. This morning she was rostered on the gorge run, her favourite run. Then the supply ship was due just after lunch, she had ordered some cargo pants like what they use in the military and new boots for herself, she had waited a full month already and was desperate to know if they fit right. From her only experience of living her whole life on this remote planet, she figured that waiting for her shopping orders was the worst. Her feet hit the ground and yep, the bell sounded. She dressed in a long sleeve t-shirt, and tights, tossed her shoulder length dark brown wavy hair up in a messy bun. She then slipped her comm into her back pocket and wrapped her ele
She entered the run’s changeroom and went to her locker to pull out her orange outside suit, and checked it over for damage or weak spots. They had to wear them whenever they went out, it protected them from the elements, the harsh cold and unforgiving rays of light that reflected into the solar system. You could survive outside without a suit but it wasn’t pleasant. It was freezing and if you got hit by a ray of light it felt like an ice cold knife being dragged across your skin, it left a red mark too.Jenny and Mac entered the room too. They were the other runners for this morning.“Hey Mia” Jenny said“Hey guys” Mia replied“Going to set a new record this morning” Mac teased“Nah” Said Mia “I don’t think you will be catching my old record anytime soon; I don’t want to make it even harder for you guys”“Ha!” said Mac “don’t worry, I
Captain Jay’s mind was racing, making lists of all the things he needed to get done, he needed a team to protect Princess Rota and a team to go and find the missing princess, He needed his core team now. He pulled our his comm screen and send a group message to his core team to meet him at Princess Rota’s apartments. His core team were the people he had trained from the start. He had other guards beneath him but they were transfers from other squads or new recruits that he hadn’t had time to asse yet. No he would only use the people he knew for now because there was the possibility of it being an inside job.Beeves & Boris were the first to show up, they were already on their way before they got Jay’s message. They had a case with them which jay took and put on the kitchen bench, he would explain that later. Next to arrive was Benny, his second in command, Then Kat and Tilly. Once they were all together Captain Jay introduced everyone.&ldqu
Captain Jay’s call to his superior went off without a hitch, Kat was authorised to watch the princess and they had permission to follow up on the lead but he would need a spaceship, and a crew who he could trust. He thought for a minute and then he smiled, Bunny, she owes me a big favour and she would make this mission fun. He found her on his comm screen, and clicked on her line.“Hey bunny”A loud cheery female voice was on the other end “Oh hey Jay, you remember how to get in touch with me now”“Nope, I remembered you own me a favour, a big fat favour and I’m calling it in”“Oh gosh” There was scoffing laugh on the other end of the line “I forgot you really are the most direct person I ever knew. What . . . could you possibly ever want from me?“A spaceship that I can borrow for 1 week, without anyone asking questions, and maybe a couple of trusted crew members”
Mia had a Planet History class after her morning run & shower with Master Alex. It would be in room 2a. She was a little early so decided to go via the mess hall and help herself to a choc custard. She only allowed herself to have a little a week because she loved them so much and unchecked this addiction could ruin her figure. She had a classic hourglass figure, or she had been told by one of the girls that read all the rich people gossip news, that she had absolutely no interest in. She had left her thick wavy hair out because it was still drying from the shower but now it was starting to annoy her so she chucked it up in a piggy tail and headed for class.Master Alex was in the room waiting, so was Mac and the other trainees, just Jenny was missing.“Trainee’s get your comm’s out and open the document Planet Guizer History and start reading until you get to chapter 5.”There was a collective groan, Mia didn’t actually know mu
