LESSIE

For one heart-stopping second, I forgot how to breathe.

Sandra’s eyes went wide as they landed on my neck, her lips parting soundlessly.

I froze under her stare, every muscle in my body locking up.

Then instinct kicked in, I jerked back, my hand flying to cover the mark.

Shit.

My stomach dropped. I should’ve been more careful.

I should’ve known Sandra would walk in unannounced like she always did.

Her face changed to fear, confusion, then a kind of horror I couldn’t name.

“Lessie,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “What… what happened to your neck?”

I swallowed hard, taking a shaky step back. “It’s nothing.”

She shook her head, eyes glistening. “Don’t lie to me.” Her hand came up halfway, like she wanted to touch the mark but couldn’t bring herself to.

“Did someone...” her voice broke off, barely audible—“did someone beat you?”

The words made my heart twist painfully. I looked away, unable to meet her gaze.

Silence stretched, thick and suffocating.

  • The Professor, My Mate   Chapter 49

LESSIE Work was supposed to distract me. That was the point of it, at least. But as I sat behind the polished marble front desk of the Asterion Grand Hotel, idly tracing circles on the guest ledger with my pen, I couldn’t stop thinking about Ethan’s unanswered call.We were supposed to FaceTime tonight. I’d promised him I’d be home early, that we’d catch up on classwork and maybe watch something together, but when my manager called and said someone had called in sick, I didn’t even hesitate to pick up the shift. The pay was too good, and the truth was… I needed the money.Summer wasn’t far away, and if I managed to save up enough from my part-time shifts here, I could finally afford that little vacation I’d been dreaming about. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere far from all of the chaos, the professors who weren’t supposed to mean anything and yet somehow did.Still, guilt gnawed at me as I looked at the clock. 8:42 p.m. Ethan was probably asleep by now.I sighed and tucked a loose strand

  • The Professor, My Mate   Chapter 48

LESSIE Ethan didn’t say another word after that. He just got up quietly and started walking back toward the dorms. I followed a few paces behind, unsure if he even wanted me to. By the time we reached the dorm building, the corridors were nearly empty. A few late-night voices echoed faintly in the distance, muffled by closed doors. I followed him inside, up the stairs, and into the familiar warmth of his room.He dropped onto the edge of his bed and buried his face in his hands.I stood there for a moment, twisting my fingers nervously. “Ethan…”He didn’t look up. “When did you find out?”The question hit like a stone. I lowered my gaze to the floor. “A while ago,” I admitted softly. “It was right after the field trip. When I first… felt the pull.”He lifted his head, his eyes searching mine. “And you didn’t think to tell me?”My throat tightened. “I didn’t even understand what it was at first. I thought it would go away if I ignored it.”He gave a short, humorless laugh. “You th

LESSIE The silence that followed Dante’s words was deafening.I felt my world tilt, as if the ground had been yanked out from under me. Fated mates. The words still echoed in my head like a curse I couldn’t escape. Ethan’s eyes had gone wide, first with shock, then with hurt. He looked between Dante and me, searching for a denial, a joke, anything to make sense of it.But I had nothing to give him.The air between us thickened until I could barely breathe. Ethan’s jaw clenched, his nostrils flaring as he looked at me again. “Tell me he’s lying,” he said, his voice low but trembling. “Lessie, tell me this isn’t true.”I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly too tight to speak.Dante didn’t even flinch. He just stood there, arms crossed, as if this whole thing amused him.Ethan gave a short, bitter laugh, one that cracked halfway through. “Right,” he muttered, shaking his head. “Of course it’s true.” His voice rose, breaking with disbelief. “You knew, didn’t you? You both knew this en

LESSIE For a heartbeat, I didn’t understand what had just happened. It was like the air had been sucked out of the room, leaving only heat and the sharp, burning pain that bloomed across my neck. Dante’s teeth sank deep, not enough to draw blood but enough to make my body jolt, every muscle tightening under the sudden, searing sensation. It burned. God, it burned. The pain wasn’t sharp like a cut, it was heavy, pulsing, as if something was being branded deep beneath my skin. I wanted to scream, to shove him away, but my voice caught somewhere in my throat, strangled by shock. And then, just as the burn reached its peak, something else followed, a slow, spreading warmth that coiled low in my stomach, confusing and shameful and nothing I wanted to feel.Pleasure.I hated that word, hated how my body betrayed me by responding to something that should have terrified me. The sensation came like a ripple, colliding with panic and guilt until I could barely tell where one ended and the

  • The Professor, My Mate   Chapter 44

LESSIE By the time I walked into the hallway the next morning, the photos were gone.Every single one of them. The walls that had felt like execution grounds yesterday now looked empty—too clean, too quiet, like the school itself was pretending nothing ever happened. I stood there for a long moment, staring at the blank bulletin board, my stomach turning with a strange blend of relief and disbelief.Someone had to have taken them down overnight. But who? The school authorities? Or… Professor Dante? The thought made my pulse skip. Knowing Taide, he wouldn’t have backed down without a fight. He lived for chaos. The only person with enough power to stop him was Dante and the possibility that he’d done this for me made my skin prickle with unease.I forced myself to breathe, pushing the thought away. I wasn’t going to start my morning thinking about him. Not after what happened in the lab yesterday. Just remembering the way his breath had brushed my neck, the way my heart had betra
