AYLA

The chants, and cheers of my name continued as I walked. I got to the middle of the pathway that led to the altar that held the throne, and I slowed down walking.

The chants and cheers filled the air like music.

But I couldn’t enjoy it, I couldn’t smile, I could barely breathe.

My name kept echoing. "Lady Ayla Stormbringer! Healer of Mercia!"

They cheered like I was a hero. Like I was someone special.

But all I could think about… was him. Slade.

He was sitting on the throne.

I hadn’t seen him in months. I had worked hard to avoid him. Using secret paths just so we wouldn’t run into each other.

But not today, today, I couldn’t hide. I had to face him.

My feet kept moving, one slow step at a time. I walked down the long path in the throne room. The floor was shiny and smooth. My dress flowed down with each step.

I tried not to look up. I tried to just keep walking. But my eyes… they betrayed me.

I looked, and there he was already looking at me.

AYLAFor the past few months I have tried my very best to avoid Slade, and his mother. I devoted my time healing the soldiers that were injured in the fight that Asher and brought to our front door. That has helped me in avoiding any running with the two people that I didn't want to see. Along with the hidden passage, Tara had found a passage that runs from the garden in the palace to the hallway close to my chambers. But today wasn't one that I could avoid. A lot is happening today, and there is no way I won't see Slade or the daggering stares of his mother.“You have to stay with Tara, Amora,” I said to my supposed new daughter. She is another way I have avoided Slade. Being with her most of the time has been of joy, and gladness. Now I know why my mother didn't want me out of her sight most times. Amora is my light in the darkness. She might not be my real daughter, but hearing her call me mother makes it real.“I want to be with you, Mama. To see the princess,” she pouted.“The

SLADEMyself, and Damon walked out of the council chambers. We were walking towards the entrance of the palace when Damon shoved me into a narrow passage.“Okay, there are no eyes, and no ears,” he said, and I looked at him confused. He slammed me against the wall.“Where do you get off treating Ayla that way?” He asked. “Huh? After all she has done for Mercia.”“I'm doing it for her protection,” I said with gritted teeth.“Her protection, my ass. You are punishing her, when the real person you should be punishing is yourself. If there is any punishment to give,” he said to me.“I don't know what you are talking about,” I tried to deflect but he was way ahead of me.“Oh please don't give me that crap. I don't know what you are thinking by treating Ayla the way that you have,” he said, and stayed silent for a while. “Maybe it's your own twisted way of trying to get penance for your supposed distraction…”“There is nothing like a supposed distraction,” I cut him off. “I was distracted,”

AYLAI walked back to the council chambers leaving Slade behind in his passage. My heart ached, and tears swelled up in my eyes. But I didn't break. I can't break. Not right now. Right now the people of Mercia needs me. Needs me to take away the eyes that see everything around them.Like my mother said. I'm of Mercia, Stormbringer, and Moonlit Pack. Even the whole world. I don't know what that means but I'm ready to serve. No one. Not even King Slade will stop me.I got to the chamber to see Damon, Ivy, and Silvia waiting for us. Silvia looks at me with those worrying eyes of hers. I shook my head, and she gasped. She has always been the one rooting for me, and Slade to be together. Well, whatever we had was foolishness on our path. But I know that no matter how many times I'll try to avoid it, or not think about it. Slade will always be on my mind. He has become my anchor, where I draw my strength. But if I'm not the same for it, I should just take whatever I have been given, and

SLADEI watched as she scoffed, and folded her hands around her body. She looked at me with so much pain, and disappointment.Damon, Silvia, and Ivy, they had the same look too but I don't care. Ayla is going to tell us what we need to know.Mercia has gone through a lot of threats recently, and we desperately need a win. “This is not the right way, your highness,” Damon whispered, but I ignored. He is only telling me that because of the feelings he thinks I have for Ayla. But it was those feelings that blinded me to the threats the kingdom faced. The council set me straight, and now I see things clearly. Fortunately we didn't confess any form of deep love for each other. So all these will be painless.“Yeah, I highly doubt that,” I heard a voice inside of me, and I gasped while taking a step backwards. It sounded like Ayla's voice.I looked up at her, she still looked normal. Not like someone who just spoke in my head. “Did you hear that?” I whispered to Damon, who shook his head.

AYLAI held on to Slade's body as I staggered. I didn't feel weak like I did when I woke up.Instead I felt stronger. Stronger than I have ever been. It's the light my mother gave to me.“But what about her?” I asked myself as I looked around looking for her. Does this mean she can't visit me in my dreams or talk to me ever again. I was about to scream in pain when she appeared in front of me. Walking through Damon, and Silvia. She stood in front of me while Slade was holding my body like his life depended on it.My mother smiled and placed her palm on my face. She felt so warm, and safe. “I'll always be with you, my dear child. Always,” she said, and I smiled.“But right now, you need to wake up,” her face changed. She looked serious. “What?” I asked, confused.“You can't stay here. You need to wake up. Wake up!” She screamed in my ears, and my eyes opened. This time I could hear the noises around me, and the ray of the sun bounded with my skin.“She's coming back,” I felt Slade'
