"Yes," I breathed, because lying felt useless
He took a step closer to me and whispered. "Ombra Nera is no child's play. For your own good, keep your nose out of business that doesn't concern you," he said. It almost sounded like he cared about my safety but no, I was sure it was a warning. "I wouldn't indulge myself with mafia business, and I don't know why you would either," I retorted, keeping my voice at the same level as his. His dark eyes stared into mine and I could feel my confidence being stripped away like a layer of onion. He said nothing more but turned away and walked towards the mansion with two guards flanking him on both sides. I took deep breaths to steady my breathing. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know he was going to be here," Isabella said, approaching me from behind. Sighing, I turned to face her. "It's fine, not your fault. Let's just try to enjoy the party." A wide smile found its way back to her beautiful face. "That's what I like to hear. Come on, let me introduce you to some people," she said, pulling me along with her. And this time, I gladly obliged. I met Maria, Silas's mate. She was sweet, kind, nothing like the monster she was tied to. We even shared a few laughs, maybe because we had that in common. We had monsters for mates. As planned, I mingled, though most women kept their distance. I didn't push, it wasn't worth forcing them just because I was Luna. By the time my energy drained, I signaled Sofia. She was still enjoying herself, so I said my goodbyes and left with the new guard. "Your name?" I asked as we neared the mansion. "Trevor, ma'am." I nodded, already turning to my door when my stomach growled. I hadn't eaten a bite since Moretti ruined my appetite. "I'll grab something from the kitchen," I told him. He started to follow, but I stopped him. "Stay. It's just downstairs. Ten minutes, if I'm not back, then you can worry." His expression stayed rigid, but he gave a reluctant nod. Finally, some alone time. The kitchen was larger than I remembered, and to my surprise, a maid was there. She froze when she saw me. "Luna. How may I be of service?" she bowed. I waved it off. "Just something light. A sandwich will do." I said, plopping down on one of the barstools. She hurried to work while I sat at the counter. After a few minutes, she set down a tray with sandwiches, grapes, and a glass of orange juice. I thanked her and grabbed the plate off the tray before walking back up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, Trevor's back was turned. My eyes drifted to the far end of the hall, the Alpha's study and bedroom. Curiosity got the best of me, and I walked towards a door I had seen him walk into twice. The door was shut, and I couldn't hear a single sound coming from behind it. I pressed my ear to the door, but was met with the same silence as before. I had just turned to leave when the doorknob twitched. My breath caught as it turned, slowly. Someone was on the other side. I froze. There was no escape, whoever was inside would see me the moment the door opened. The door cracked open, then stopped. It hung there, ajar, but no one stepped out. My heart hammered against my ribs. Run, my body screamed, but my legs refused. Then I heard voices, clearly. It was Alpha Romano. And at least one other person. "My instructions are final, Silas. I don't want us discussing Ombra Nera any further," Alpha Romano's voice, cold and authoritative, vibrated. The person at the door hesitated. "Alpha, this can't work," Silas said. "We need all hands on deck. We have shipments coming in and out." His words had a stammer to them. He was also afraid of the Alpha. Silas. I could almost feel his claws rake my skin, see those human eyes watching as they tore into me. A softer, clearly feminine voice joined in. "Silas, why don't we strategize on our own? See how we can make do with the resources Alpha has given us already." "Ombra Nera shouldn't take a fall because you don't want to bury your pride," Silas snapped. A sharp inhale followed. "You will not tell me what to do with my people," Alpha Romano growled, slamming his fist over something that sounded like a hard surface. I leaned in, needing to hear more when...... A hand grabbed my arm firmly, wrenching me far away from the door. My gasp was choked, swallowed by terror. The plate in my other hand, almost slipping from my finger. I looked up in fear, Trevor's face loomed close, his eyes cold with disapproval. "Luna," he said, in a low, stern murmur. "...the Alpha would be displeased if you were caught eavesdropping on his private discussions." I pulled my arm away from his iron grip, smoothing the fabric of my dress with trembling hands. My cheeks burned. "I wasn't eavesdropping," I argued, though my voice wavered. "I was merely passing by the door." Trevor said nothing in response, his gaze unwavering. "Let me escort you back to your room, Luna." I joined him, my legs feeling like jelly as we walked towards my door. My mind reeled, replaying the fragments of conversation I heard. 'You will not tell me what to do with my people'. My people. The phrase froze me at my door. The weight of it crashed over me. Did that mean Alpha Romano wasn't just tied to Ombra Nera ...but leading them?"Yes," I breathed, because lying felt uselessHe took a step closer to me and whispered. "Ombra Nera is no child's play. He hung his head low in disappointment.I clicked my tongue in irritation and disappeared down the hallway quickly.I was on a mission and I wasn't going to let Nigel or anyone else for that matter, come in my way.The day before, I visited Isabella in her room for the first time and we spoke at length. I told her I didn't think Alpha Romano would ever truly accept me as his mate and that I was fine with that. I never wanted to be mates with him anyway."He's difficult to please, but I assure you, he'll warm up with time," she said.I shook my head. "He's a monster, Isabella, I don't want that," I said softly. The issue wasn't Alpha Romano not accepting me as his mate. The issue was who he was, there was no changing that. She looked like she was about to argue, but she decided against it and nodded. "You may never truly have him fully as your mate, but there's something else you have," she said.I perked up from the armchair. "What's that?'"Your title as Luna."I rolled my eyes, slum
I froze. "Makayla? Is that you?" I said, with hopes of getting a response but none came. I tried again but still, nothing. Disappointment floods my chest. Stupid of me to think she was back by some miracle. I peeked behind me and saw a shadow from behind the wall. "Hello?" I called out but there was no response. Frowning, I moved towards it but on getting closer, there was no one there. I convinced myself that it was in my head and returned on my initial quest. On getting to the garden, I paused in my tracks. There was a man crouched in front of one section of my garden, removing weeds and pruning leaves. That wasn't what surprised me, it was the garden itself. My heart sank at the sight of the garden. Weeks of neglect had left it choked with weeds, vines dragging down the buds. It was the perfect illustration for my soul. Neglected. Overgrown. It felt like the last thing I had control of, had been snatched from my hands. I stood there dumbfounded, staring at the place with a heavy
"Shhhh, everything will be okay," I heard Isabella say. Her voice sounded like she had been crying. No, it wouldn't be okay, I wanted to say to her but I couldn't force my mouth to open.It would never be okay.--The image of Mr. Perri's torn body had been permanently carved beneath my eyelids. Every time I closed my eyes, the scene replayed. It was vivid and it made me sick.Silas' raised paw, the sound of tearing flesh, the piercing scream, the splashes of blood all over the walls, his eyes wide and lifeless.Nights were a torment. Ever since I arrived at Romano Crest, there was always one thing or the other that took my sleep away. I'd wake up drenched in a cold sweat, heart hammering, the now familiar taste of fear heavy in my mouth.I shut myself away, seeing only Chayil and Isabella. Avoiding the Alpha was easy, I never left my room. He didn't need to kill that innocent poor man just to stop my questions about Ombra Nera. Since that day, food lost all taste, every tray left un
Selene's POVI froze when I saw Alpha Romano and his beta on the balcony. The look on his face made my stomach twist."Come with me," he said, already turning away.Nigel stood behind me and gestured for me to walk. I couldn't refuse. We moved through a hallway I knew, then a door I'd never noticed. The staircase beyond seemed to steep downwards. As I stepped in, I was immediately greeted by the stench of blood.... and fear.I shivered. Blood pooled at my feet, welcoming us at the entrance. My heart dropped to my stomach the moment I looked up.A man was tied up, looking battered and bruised.I slowly turned to Alpha Romano. "Wh...what is this?" He looked unfazed, bored in fact."You tell me, what is this?" the pitch of my voice increased."You have that man tied up and beaten. He's bleeding out! What's going on?" I screamed, repulsed."Look again Selene," he said and I did.The man's eyes were blindfolded and he looked like he had passed out. There was blood dribbling out of the cor
"What's that?" His face was blank. Well, he clearly knew nothing. It was worth a shot, though. "Never mind," I said as we arrived at the garden. I spent the rest of the afternoon and early hours of the evening in the garden. I had sectioned out a portion of the rather empty field that I wanted to grow fruits and flowers on. It was the first thing that felt mine. -- "Is it true that the Luna doesn't have a wolf?" a whisper cut through the quiet garden.I froze, scanning the garden. I couldn't find anyone when I lifted my head. "So I heard too, she doesn't look like she does though," another voice added. The two voices snickered.Shortly, two girls appeared, gasping when they saw me crouched there. "Luna!" one stammered, bowing before they hurried off.Strange... I could hear them long before they got close to me. My hearing hadn't been this sharp since I lost connection with my wolf.Sure. I wasn't oblivious to the fact that the pack members spoke about me, and not in a nice way
