He hung his head low in disappointment.
I clicked my tongue in irritation and disappeared down the hallway quickly. I was on a mission and I wasn't going to let Nigel or anyone else for that matter, come in my way. The day before, I visited Isabella in her room for the first time and we spoke at length. I told her I didn't think Alpha Romano would ever truly accept me as his mate and that I was fine with that. I never wanted to be mates with him anyway. "He's difficult to please, but I assure you, he'll warm up with time," she said. I shook my head. "He's a monster, Isabella, I don't want that," I said softly. The issue wasn't Alpha Romano not accepting me as his mate. The issue was who he was, there was no changing that. She looked like she was about to argue, but she decided against it and nodded. "You may never truly have him fully as your mate, but there's something else you have," she said. I perked up from the armchair. "What's that?' "Your title as Luna." I rolled my eyes, slumping back in the chair. "What good has that done for me?" "You can leverage it," she said with a cunning smile. Step One: dress like a Luna, Talk like a Luna, Walk like a Luna. Yeah, you got that right. Isabella was teaching me to be a Luna. We spent the rest of that day combing through my closet and picking out sets of clothes together. Most of the clothes there were not exactly casual wear. They were, in fact, clothes fit for a Luna. It turns out, I had just been subconsciously picking out the casual ones from the numerous clothes. On that day, I had worn a champagne coloured skirt that hugged my curves in the right places, then flowed down my feet, paired with a brown shirt that I felt was a bit too extra. I thought I looked ridiculous dressing that way inside the mansion. A part of me wondered what Alpha Romano would think if he saw me, but I quickly brushed away the thought. "Oh my goodness," I heard Isabella squeal as she ran in my direction. "You look absolutely gorgeous, Luna," she gushed. "My cousin wouldn't be able to keep his eyes off you if he saw you," she said with a giggle. I quickly glanced behind me at my guard, but his gaze remained straight ahead. I glared at her, although my heart did a small somersault. She waved me off. Step Two: Meet the women in the Pack. Isabella's idea was for me to mingle with the pack women and make them like me. According to her, the pack women liked to side with whoever had the most authority, and some of them were bummed that the Luna hadn't shown up for any social gathering yet. Luckily, there was a small outdoor party and Sofia had a plus one invite. It was the perfect opportunity to mingle. The house was just by the left side of the mansion. As we approached the music and the cheers, I was thrown back to that night of my birthday celebration, and I shivered. It now seemed like it had happened a long time ago. "Marta," Isabella suddenly said as we approached the venue. "Huh?" "Marta...the celebrant's name is Marta. She's Silas' mate's sister," she explained. Wait. Silas? I was about to scold her for not telling me, but I realised people in the gathering had started to notice us. I saw some people whispering amongst themselves, undoubtedly looking in my direction, and I straightened up. Walk like a Luna. A young woman who looked a few years older than me walked up to us. "Luna Selene," she greeted with a bow. "Happy birthday," Isabella said, giving her a side hug and air kisses. "Happy birthday, Marta," I greeted with a smile. "Isabella invited me as her plus one. I hope my coming isn't any trouble." "Thank you so much, Luna. And no, certainly not. I'm delighted to see you, in fact. Please..." she gestured towards the rest of the party, who had quieted down. They all bowed their head in unison when we stood before them. I would have been taken aback completely if Sofia hadn't warned me. "Hello everyone," I said with a smile I hoped was charming, and a small wave. They returned with half-hearted smiles of their own before going back to their chatter. I felt confident. Marta and I made small talk, but she was soon pulled away by another guest who was making enquiries. Isabella was chatting with some women, so I used the moment to take a look around. Werewolves loved to drink. Their alcohol tolerance was extremely high, and judging by the drinks I saw, this party was a clear indicator. I saw mocktails at the end of the table, so I made my way there. "Fancy seeing you here," a familiar voice said, and my head shot up. The thirst suddenly disappeared from my throat, and a thin line stretched across my lips. "Alpha," I said. I noticed the way his eyes raked across my body and my knees threatened to give out, a traitorous pull from the bond I despised. My pulse raced. Why was I feeling this way? That man was a killer. A destructive, cruel, and heartless monster. I hadn't seen him since he made me watch Mr. Perri die. I avoided him like the plague he was, yet there he stood, in front of me. I should have expected he was going to be here since Isabella said the celebrant was related to Silas in some way, but I barely had the time to think it over. I said a silent prayer that I wouldn't cross paths with him that night. It had been difficult trying to erase the memory of him in my head, I didn't want to go back to square one. "You've been avoiding me," he said, a statement, not a question, but I answered anyway."Yes," I breathed, because lying felt uselessHe took a step closer to me and whispered. "Ombra Nera is no child's play. For your own good, keep your nose out of business that doesn't concern you," he said.It almost sounded like he cared about my safety but no, I was sure it was a warning."I wouldn't indulge myself with mafia business, and I don't know why you would either," I retorted, keeping my voice at the same level as his.His dark eyes stared into mine and I could feel my confidence being stripped away like a layer of onion. He said nothing more but turned away and walked towards the mansion with two guards flanking him on both sides.I took deep breaths to steady my breathing. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know he was going to be here," Isabella said, approaching me from behind.Sighing, I turned to face her. "It's fine, not your fault. Let's just try to enjoy the party."A wide smile found its way back to her beautiful face. "That's what I like to hear. Come on, let me introduce

I froze. "Makayla? Is that you?" I said, with hopes of getting a response but none came. I tried again but still, nothing. Disappointment floods my chest. Stupid of me to think she was back by some miracle. I peeked behind me and saw a shadow from behind the wall. "Hello?" I called out but there was no response. Frowning, I moved towards it but on getting closer, there was no one there. I convinced myself that it was in my head and returned on my initial quest. On getting to the garden, I paused in my tracks. There was a man crouched in front of one section of my garden, removing weeds and pruning leaves. That wasn't what surprised me, it was the garden itself. My heart sank at the sight of the garden. Weeks of neglect had left it choked with weeds, vines dragging down the buds. It was the perfect illustration for my soul. Neglected. Overgrown. It felt like the last thing I had control of, had been snatched from my hands. I stood there dumbfounded, staring at the place with a heavy
"Shhhh, everything will be okay," I heard Isabella say. Her voice sounded like she had been crying. No, it wouldn't be okay, I wanted to say to her but I couldn't force my mouth to open.It would never be okay.--The image of Mr. Perri's torn body had been permanently carved beneath my eyelids. Every time I closed my eyes, the scene replayed. It was vivid and it made me sick.Silas' raised paw, the sound of tearing flesh, the piercing scream, the splashes of blood all over the walls, his eyes wide and lifeless.Nights were a torment. Ever since I arrived at Romano Crest, there was always one thing or the other that took my sleep away. I'd wake up drenched in a cold sweat, heart hammering, the now familiar taste of fear heavy in my mouth.I shut myself away, seeing only Chayil and Isabella. Avoiding the Alpha was easy, I never left my room. He didn't need to kill that innocent poor man just to stop my questions about Ombra Nera. Since that day, food lost all taste, every tray left un
Selene's POVI froze when I saw Alpha Romano and his beta on the balcony. The look on his face made my stomach twist."Come with me," he said, already turning away.Nigel stood behind me and gestured for me to walk. I couldn't refuse. We moved through a hallway I knew, then a door I'd never noticed. The staircase beyond seemed to steep downwards. As I stepped in, I was immediately greeted by the stench of blood.... and fear.I shivered. Blood pooled at my feet, welcoming us at the entrance. My heart dropped to my stomach the moment I looked up.A man was tied up, looking battered and bruised.I slowly turned to Alpha Romano. "Wh...what is this?" He looked unfazed, bored in fact."You tell me, what is this?" the pitch of my voice increased."You have that man tied up and beaten. He's bleeding out! What's going on?" I screamed, repulsed."Look again Selene," he said and I did.The man's eyes were blindfolded and he looked like he had passed out. There was blood dribbling out of the cor
"What's that?" His face was blank. Well, he clearly knew nothing. It was worth a shot, though. "Never mind," I said as we arrived at the garden. I spent the rest of the afternoon and early hours of the evening in the garden. I had sectioned out a portion of the rather empty field that I wanted to grow fruits and flowers on. It was the first thing that felt mine. -- "Is it true that the Luna doesn't have a wolf?" a whisper cut through the quiet garden.I froze, scanning the garden. I couldn't find anyone when I lifted my head. "So I heard too, she doesn't look like she does though," another voice added. The two voices snickered.Shortly, two girls appeared, gasping when they saw me crouched there. "Luna!" one stammered, bowing before they hurried off.Strange... I could hear them long before they got close to me. My hearing hadn't been this sharp since I lost connection with my wolf.Sure. I wasn't oblivious to the fact that the pack members spoke about me, and not in a nice way
