Design War

6:00 AM. Lane Mansion - My Old Design Room.

I hadn't slept. Neither had Alexander.

The whole room was covered in sketches. My sketches from when I was 16, Grandpa's old Starlight ledgers from 1985, and fresh white paper for tonight.

Chloe's I*******m post had 100K likes already.

> @ChloeLaneOfficial: Some people come back after 3 years and think they can steal family legacy. My Revival Collection was MY idea. I have the original sketches from last month. The truth will come out at Starlight Press Conference tonight 8 PM. #LaneSistersFight #ProtectOriginalDesign

Her "proof" was a sketch of a white mermaid dress with a star on the chest. It was MY sketch. From my notebook when I was 19. She stole it from my room after I left.

The comments were brutal.

_Chloe is the real talent._

_Sophia is just a married woman playing CEO._

Alexander read them over my shoulder and his jaw tightened.

"Do you want me to buy I*******m?" he said seriously.

I laughed for the first time that morning. "Mr. Knight, you can't buy I*******m to delete your sister-in-law's post."

"I can try. I have the money."

"No. We beat her with design. That's what Lane women do."

He poured me the third coffee. "What's the plan, CEO Lane?"

"She says I stole her design. So tonight, we don't bring old sketches. We draw live. In front of all media. Let New York see who can really draw."

8:00 AM. I went back to the basement.

The old sewing machine was dusty, covered with a white sheet. Grandpa's Singer, 1975.

I knelt down, put the jade ring into the tiny keyhole at the bottom that no one ever noticed, and did what Mom said: Left three times, right two times.

_Click._

The bottom panel fell open.

Inside, velvet box. No dust inside. Grandpa sealed it perfectly.

I opened it.

Light exploded.

The Starlight Diamond. 100 carats, raw cut, not perfect round but shaped like a real star, uneven, brilliant. It glowed even in the dark basement. Worth $50M, but worth more than money — it was the first stone Grandpa ever cut when he had nothing.

I held it and cried. "Grandpa, I'm taking it home."

10:00 AM. Alexander's office — Knight Group Tower.

I locked myself in his private meeting room and drew.

Not one dress. Ten dresses. One centerpiece.

For the centerpiece, I designed a black velvet gown, off-shoulder, simple, no stars, no glitter — so that the diamond could be the only star. The Starlight Diamond would sit on the chest, held by thin platinum chains, like a star that fell and was caught.

It was Grandpa's dream dress. He drew it in 1975 but never had the diamond cut perfect enough to make it. Now I had it.

Alexander knocked at 2 PM with lunch. He didn't come in. He slid sushi under the door like I was in prison.

"Sophia, eat. You need hands steady for tonight."

"Mr. Knight, how do you know I'm not finished?"

"Because when you are in design mode, you forget the world. But I will remind you to eat."

At 6 PM, I was done. Ten sketches, one diamond sewn into muslin mockup by my own hands.

I came out, hair messy, fingers with needle pricks, velvet box in hand.

Alexander was still in his suit, tie off, sleeves rolled up, working on laptop but waiting.

He looked at me and stopped breathing for a second.

"You look..." he said.

"Like a mess?"

"Like a CEO."

He walked to me, took the velvet box, opened it, saw the diamond, and understood.

"This is the $50M?"

"This is Starlight's heart. Tonight, Chloe will show a stolen sketch. I will show the heart."

8:00 PM. Starlight Press Conference — Lane Group Building, 1st Floor Runway.

All of New York fashion media came. Because of the hashtag. Because sisters fighting is good gossip.

Chloe was there early, in a white dress, holding her "original" sketch, crying to reporters.

"I just want justice. My sister was away for three years. This collection was my hard work..."

My father was with her, nodding. "Sophia has always been... unstable since her mother's illness..."

Then the doors opened.

I walked in. Not in white. In black simple pantsuit. No makeup except red lipstick like Mom said. Hair up. Alexander behind me holding the garment bag.

Silence.

Chloe saw me and smirked. "Sister, you came. Do you want to apologize now?"

I didn't look at her. I looked at the media.

"Good evening. I'm Sophia Lane, CEO of Lane Group. My sister Chloe says I stole her Revival Collection. So tonight, no lawyers, no old notebooks. Just design."

I snapped my fingers. Alexander zipped open the garment bag and hung the black velvet gown on the mannequin under the bright light.

The Starlight Diamond caught the light and threw stars all over the ceiling, the walls, the cameras. The whole room gasped.

"This," I said, voice steady, "is Starlight Revival — Look One. I drew it this morning, 10 AM to 6 PM. Live. The diamond inside is the Starlight Diamond, cut by my grandfather in 1975. 100 carats. Never shown to public before tonight. It was hidden by him for the real heir."

Chloe's face went white. "That... that diamond... that's fake! Where did you get it!"

"Inside Grandpa's sewing machine. The one you called trash and wanted to sell last year for $50? The ring is the key. Ask Father, he knows."

My father stepped back, shocked.

I turned to the media. "Chloe has a sketch from last month. I have ten sketches from today. And I have a proposal."

I took a blank paper and charcoal from the table.

"Chloe and I will both draw now. Same topic: Starlight. 30 minutes. Live. In front of you. Let New York decide who is the Lane."

Reporters went crazy. Live stream started. #LaneSistersFight hit 1M viewers.

Chloe had to agree. If she refused, she admitted theft.

We sat at two tables, back to back, cameras on our hands.

I closed my eyes and thought of Grandpa teaching me to hold charcoal when I was 5. _Don't draw dress, Sophia. Draw light._

I drew. Hands moved fast, steady, even with needle pricks bleeding a little on paper. I didn't hide it. Blood on design is real design.

30 minutes later, we turned.

Chloe's drawing: pretty, but stiff, like copy from P*******t. A star dress, but no soul.

My drawing: A woman in black velvet, diamond on chest, walking away from a burning house, holding a little girl's hand — me and Mom leaving the poisoned mansion.

The room was silent. Then a veteran designer from Vogue, Mrs. Chen who knew Grandpa, stood up and clapped.

"That's Elena's hand. That's Lane's hand. The other one is just... pretty."

One by one, applause.

Chloe tore her paper. "THIS IS RIGGED! SHE BRIBED THEM! ALEXANDER KNIGHT PAID THEM!"

Alexander finally stepped forward from the shadows. He hadn't spoken all night.

He said only one sentence, looking at Chloe coldly:

"My wife doesn't need to bribe anyone to be brilliant. But you will need a lawyer tomorrow. For theft of intellectual property and for that fake sketch you bought from my assistant's old trash."

He held up my old notebook, the one with my 19-year-old handwriting, with date stamp 3 years ago.

Chloe collapsed on the floor.

My father ran to her.

I didn't watch. I looked at Alexander and the diamond glowing between us.

The press conference ended. Starlight Revival sold out in 12 minutes online. $5M in pre-orders.

11 PM. Rooftop of Lane Building.

Just us. The city below. The diamond back in box safe.

"You won," he said.

"We won," I corrected.

He took my bleeding finger and kissed it, soft, like clause 8 didn't exist anymore.

"Does CEO Lane approve overtime for kissing again?"

I laughed, tired, victorious, and pulled his tie to bring him closer.

"Approved. All night overtime."

And under the real starlight this time, with $50M diamond watching, we kissed again — no contract, no business, just us.

My phone buzzed. Mom: _My daughter, I saw live stream. Your grandpa would be so proud. Come home._

I texted back: _Coming home, Mom. With your son-in-law.

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Stella Stars School

Stella was 5 years and 3 months old when she started real school. Not Lane-Knight Academy — real school, with uniforms that were not Starlight, with teachers who did not know she was Chief Star Officer. We bought her a backpack that was bigger than her. She insisted on packing it herself: one sewing kit, one star sticker sheet, one business card that said STELLA KNIGHT — CHIEF STAR OFFICER, and one photo of Baby Jian in his drawer-crib."For when I miss him," she said seriously.Hope, 4, did not start school yet. She stayed at the Academy with Chloe and Mom, drawing stars. But she cried when Stella left."Who will stamp APPROVED now?" Hope asked, holding Stella's hand at the gate."I will stamp from school. I will come back at 3 PM and stamp," Stella promised, like a CEO promising a client.Alexander drove her. He wanted to walk her in, but Stella said, "Daddy, CEOs walk themselves in."So he parked outside, in grey sweater — because Stella demanded grey sweater for first day — and wa

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    The $200M Order

Three days after Baby Jian was born in sewing room, I got an email that made me forget I was supposed to be on bed rest.Subject: *Dior — $200M Collaboration — URGENT — Reply in 24 hours*From: Paris. Dior CEO. Not assistant. CEO himself. He wrote:> Sophia,> We saw Stella's fall video, Chloe's redemption arc, and Baby Jian's birth in sewing room. Our team loves your story. We want Starlight to co-design Dior x Starlight — 100 looks, real tailors, not factories. $200M order. Must start tomorrow. Can you do it with newborn?> — Bernard$200M. Same number as my whole company worth. Double my company in one order. And I had a 3-day-old baby in a fabric drawer, swollen feet, no sleep, and a 5-year-old CEO daughter who fired suppliers.I called Alexander. He was doing dishes with baby Jian in sling, as usual."Mr. Knight, Dior wants $200M. Tomorrow."He dropped plate. Plate broke. Second plate broke this week because of my news. First was $1B deal hung up, now plate."Tomorrow? With Jian

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Baby Jian-Born In Sewing

I thought Stella was a tyrant at 6 months old. At 5 years old, she was a CEO tyrant. And I was 8 months pregnant with a boy who kicked like he wanted to sew his way out of my belly. It was Monday, 2 PM, Lane-Knight Academy, third floor sewing room. I was supposed to be on bed rest. Doctor said bed rest because my feet were swollen like bread. Alexander said bed rest because he read on Google that 8-month pregnant CEOs should not sit at sewing machines for 8 hours. Mom said bed rest because she said Lane women always have fast birth and I should stay near sewing machines, not office. But I had a $200M company. $200M does not do bed rest. So I was in sewing room, sitting on floor, surrounded by fabric rolls, trying to fix the gold star patch Stella sewed on Alexander's butt-tux. The tux that ripped when he fell on runway 5 years ago. He still wears it every year for vow renewal. He says it's couture now. I say it's excuse to not buy new tux.Stella and Hope were with me. Stella, 5 years

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    The Second Vow Renewal

Five years later.Lane Garden was different now.No longer just garden. Now it was Lane-Knight Academy — first floor is free fashion school for girls who can't afford design school, second floor is Stella and Hope's playroom, third floor is still sewing machines that go click-clack day and night. The garden still had red thread curtain, but now faded to pink by sun. We never replaced it. Because some things should fade and still stay.Today was not a fashion show. Today was vow renewal. Second vow renewal — we did one every year as promised in Clause 4.1, but this year was special. Fifth year. And second baby.I was 33 years old. CEO Lane-Knight, $200M brand now, 120 employees, TIME cover twice. But today, I was just Sophia, 7 months pregnant again, in same red qipao from first wedding, but let out 3 inches at belly. Stella herself sewed the extra fabric — crooked stitch, but I wore it proudly.Stella was 5 years old now, not baby tyrant anymore, but mini-CEO tyrant. She had her own t

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Chloe Returns-Not As Enemy

One week after Stella's viral fall, I was in sewing room at 7 AM, alone, trying to fix Alexander's tux that ripped when he fell. The rip was small but it was right on butt — poetic.Door knocked. Not Maya's knock. Maya knocks like CEO — three fast. This knock was slow, scared."Come in."Door opened and Chloe stood there. She looked different. No Instagram makeup. Hair in ponytail, no extensions. She wore a plain white T-shirt, jeans that were not designer, and old sneakers. She held a small bag and a paper. And her belly. Her belly was big. 6 months pregnant, maybe 7.For a second, I thought I was seeing things. Last time I saw Chloe was at the copycat show, crying, wearing fake velvet."Can... can I come in?" she said, voice hoarse.I didn't say yes. I didn't say no. I just looked at her belly."How many months?" I asked."Seven," she whispered, hand automatically going to belly. "Seven months.""Whose?""Ethan's."The sewing room went silent. Only the clock ticking.Ethan. Of cours

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Stella's First Fashion Show

Stella was 6 months old and already a tyrant. She had three nannies quit in one month because she only wanted to be held by two people: me, and Alexander — but only when Alexander was wearing his soft grey sweater, not his suit. If he wore suit, she screamed like we were torturing her."She has taste," Alexander said proudly, throwing his $5,000 Tom Ford jacket on the floor and putting on the $40 grey sweater from Uniqlo that Stella liked. "She knows quality.""She knows you look less scary without suit," I said, trying to work on Spring collection while Stella tried to eat my charcoal pencil.Mom said, "Sophia, you need to take Stella out. She stays in office too much. She needs to see other babies."So I had an idea. A terrible, brilliant, GoodNovel-reader-will-love-it idea.Starlight Baby First Fashion Show. Not for adults. For babies. 20 babies from our staff, all wearing mini Starlight outfits sewn by me at 2 AM while breastfeeding. And the finale would be Stella — 6 months, 18 p
