LOGINChapter 2:
"Yes, I will."
My two words dropped into the silent living room like a bomb.
Chloe Lane's fake smile froze and cracked. My stepmother, Linda, dropped her champagne glass. It shattered on the marble floor.
My father, Robert Lane, stared at me, his mouth open. He had been ready to drag me downstairs, ready to apologize to the Knight family for his stubborn daughter. He had prepared a speech about how I was young and foolish.
Alexander Knight was still on one knee, holding my hand like I was something precious that would disappear if he let go. His grey eyes never left mine. There was something wild and desperate in them, hidden under that cold billionaire mask.
"Get up," I whispered to him, my heart beating fast. "Everyone is looking."
"I don't care if the whole world looks," he said, his voice low enough only for me to hear. His thumb was still stroking my knuckles, as if he needed to feel my pulse. "Do you know how long I have waited to hear you say yes, Sophia?"
Again, that word. _Waited._
Before I could ask, my father finally found his voice.
"Sophia! Are you... are you sure? You told me last week you would rather die than marry..."
"I changed my mind, Dad," I said, turning to him, my red dress swirling. I made my voice sweet, but my eyes were cold. I had learned that from watching Alexander on TV in my last life. "I realized you were right. Mr. Knight is a much better choice than... some college boy who only wants my money."
I looked directly at Chloe when I said that. Her face went white. She knew I was talking about Ethan.
Alexander finally stood up, but he did not let go of my hand. He pulled me to his side, his arm wrapping possessively around my waist. He was so tall, so warm, I felt tiny next to him. Protected. For the first time in two lifetimes, protected.
"Mr. Lane, if Sophia agrees, I want to get the marriage license today," Alexander said. His voice returned to its normal state — cold, calm, commanding. The Ice Billionaire was back, but his arm around me was anything but cold. "My lawyers are downstairs. My mother is here as witness. We can do it now."
"NOW?" Linda screeched, forgetting her elegant manners. "Today? But the wedding... the press... the Lanes need time to prepare! This is too fast!"
"Fast?" Alexander's eyes flicked to her, and Linda physically flinched. His gaze was like a knife. "My engagement to Miss Lane was arranged two years ago. I have already waited two years. I will not wait another day."
Two years? I frowned. The arrangement was only made six months ago in my memory. What was he talking about?
My father looked between us, his old eyes sharp. He was a businessman first. He saw the opportunity. An immediate marriage between Lane Group and Knight Group would send our stock soaring. It would crush our competitors.
"Sophia, is this truly what you want?" he asked me softly. "No one is forcing you."
In my last life, he asked the same question, and I screamed NO. I ran out of the house and went to Ethan, who told me my father was selling me.
This time, I looked up at Alexander. He was looking down at me, tense, like my answer would decide if he lived or died.
I thought of dying on my office floor. I thought of Ethan kicking the divorce papers at my face. I thought of Chloe in my wedding dress.
Then I looked at this man, this supposed monster, who was kneeling for me, trembling for me.
This was my first level up. From a foolish girl who chased fake love, to a queen who chooses a powerful ally.
"Yes, Dad," I said, clearly. "This is what I want. I want to marry Alexander Knight."
My father's eyes filled with tears. He nodded.
"Good. Good girl."
---
An hour later, I was Mrs. Knight.
It was absurd how fast Alexander moved. His lawyers really were downstairs — four of them in black suits, with a marriage license, a prenuptial agreement, and a tablet for signatures. His mother, Eleanor Knight, a beautiful, elegant woman in her 50s who was rumored to be even more ruthless than her son, walked in and hugged me.
"I've been waiting to call you daughter," she whispered in my ear, smelling like roses. "He hasn't slept properly in five years, you know. Ever since he saw your photo."
Five years? Again?
Before I could ask, Alexander pulled me away. "We need to sign."
He pushed the prenup toward me. I expected the worst — that I would get nothing, that he would take my shares.
I read it. Then I read it again.
My hands started shaking.
It wasn't a prenup that protected him. It protected ME.
Clause 1: All of Alexander Knight's personal assets, including 45% of Knight Group, will be shared jointly with Sophia Lane Knight.
Clause 2: If divorce is initiated by Alexander, he will leave with nothing.
Clause 3: Lane Group will receive a 2-billion-dollar investment from Knight Group, interest-free, with no control taken.
This wasn't a marriage contract. This was a surrender. He was giving me his empire.
"Are you insane?" I whispered, looking up at him. "If I divorce you, you lose everything."
"I know," he said calmly. "So don't divorce me. Ever."
His grey eyes were serious, intense, burning into mine.
Chloe, who was peeking over my shoulder, made a choked sound. "Two... two billion? And 45% of Knight Group? Mom!"
Linda grabbed the paper. "This is unfair! This is..."
"This is my marriage," Alexander cut her off, his voice dropping to freezing point. "My wife gets my world. If you have a problem with it, you can talk to my lawyers. All forty of them."
Linda went silent.
I signed. My signature was shaky. Sophia Lane Knight.
The moment I signed, Alexander took the pen and signed right below me, his large hand covering mine for a second. His touch sent electricity up my arm.
We were married.
Legally. Officially. In my old living room, in a red dress, with my enemies watching.
"Now," Alexander said, slipping a huge diamond ring onto my finger. It was not new. It looked vintage, with a small inscription inside: _S & A - Forever_. "You are mine. And I am yours."
The diamond was so big Chloe's eyes turned green with jealousy.
My father came and hugged me, crying. "Take care of her, Alexander."
"I will," Alexander promised. "With my life."
His mother kissed my cheek. "Welcome home, my queen."
Queen. The word made my blood rush.
Because I remembered the contest, I remembered my purpose.
I was not just a wife now. I was Sophia Knight, with 2 billion dollars backing and the most powerful man in New York as my husband. My level up had just begun.
As we were about to leave, my phone rang. Ethan. Again. Video call this time.
I was going to ignore it, but Alexander saw the name.
"Ethan Cole?" His face turned to ice. A dangerous, deadly ice I had never seen before. "Your ex-boyfriend?"
I was surprised. "You know him?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. His arm around my waist became steel.
"I know everyone who has ever touched you, Sophia," he said, his voice dangerously low. "And I know he is the reason you cried every night in your last—"
He stopped abruptly.
In my last... what? Last year? Last life?
He quickly changed the subject, but his eyes were stormy.
"Answer it," he ordered. "Put it on speaker."
I did.
Ethan's handsome, fake face appeared on screen. He was in his cheap apartment, holding roses. "Sophia! Baby! Why did you block me? Did the meeting go bad? Don't worry, I told you, that monster Knight is not worth it. Come to my place, I—"
"She can't come," Alexander said coldly, leaning into the frame. He pulled me closer, his lips brushing my temple in front of the camera. "My wife is busy tonight. She has a wedding night to attend."
Ethan's face froze. The roses fell.
"W-Wife? Sophia? What is he talking about? WIFE?"
I looked into the camera, at the man who had murdered me in my last life, and I smiled. It was the coldest smile I had ever given.
"Ethan, who is this? Don't you know it's rude to call a married woman 'baby'?" I held up my left hand, the huge diamond glittering. "I am Mrs. Knight now. Don't call me again. Ever."
And I hung up.
Ethan called back instantly. Then again. Then 10 times.
Alexander took my phone and turned it off. Then he threw it in the trash.
"I'll buy you a new one," he said. "One that only has my number in it, if I want."
He was possessive, dominating, completely different from Ethan's weak sweetness. And strangely... I liked it.
"Mr. Knight, you are very domineering for a man who just got married an hour ago," I said, trying to sound brave.
He leaned down, his face inches from mine. His grey eyes were dark with love and obsession.
"For you, Sophia, I have been domineering for five years in my dreams. Now that you are finally mine, I will be worse. Get used to it, my queen."
He picked me up — bridal style, like I weighed nothing — and carried me out of the Lane Mansion, past my screaming stepsister, past my stunned stepmother, into his black Rolls Royce.
As the car drove away toward the Knight Tower, where my new empire waited, I knew.
This was not the end. This was the beginning of my revenge. My level up. My reign.
And this time, with Alexander Knight by my side, this queen would stand unconquered.
Stella was 5 years and 3 months old when she started real school. Not Lane-Knight Academy — real school, with uniforms that were not Starlight, with teachers who did not know she was Chief Star Officer. We bought her a backpack that was bigger than her. She insisted on packing it herself: one sewing kit, one star sticker sheet, one business card that said STELLA KNIGHT — CHIEF STAR OFFICER, and one photo of Baby Jian in his drawer-crib."For when I miss him," she said seriously.Hope, 4, did not start school yet. She stayed at the Academy with Chloe and Mom, drawing stars. But she cried when Stella left."Who will stamp APPROVED now?" Hope asked, holding Stella's hand at the gate."I will stamp from school. I will come back at 3 PM and stamp," Stella promised, like a CEO promising a client.Alexander drove her. He wanted to walk her in, but Stella said, "Daddy, CEOs walk themselves in."So he parked outside, in grey sweater — because Stella demanded grey sweater for first day — and wa
Three days after Baby Jian was born in sewing room, I got an email that made me forget I was supposed to be on bed rest.Subject: *Dior — $200M Collaboration — URGENT — Reply in 24 hours*From: Paris. Dior CEO. Not assistant. CEO himself. He wrote:> Sophia,> We saw Stella's fall video, Chloe's redemption arc, and Baby Jian's birth in sewing room. Our team loves your story. We want Starlight to co-design Dior x Starlight — 100 looks, real tailors, not factories. $200M order. Must start tomorrow. Can you do it with newborn?> — Bernard$200M. Same number as my whole company worth. Double my company in one order. And I had a 3-day-old baby in a fabric drawer, swollen feet, no sleep, and a 5-year-old CEO daughter who fired suppliers.I called Alexander. He was doing dishes with baby Jian in sling, as usual."Mr. Knight, Dior wants $200M. Tomorrow."He dropped plate. Plate broke. Second plate broke this week because of my news. First was $1B deal hung up, now plate."Tomorrow? With Jian
I thought Stella was a tyrant at 6 months old. At 5 years old, she was a CEO tyrant. And I was 8 months pregnant with a boy who kicked like he wanted to sew his way out of my belly. It was Monday, 2 PM, Lane-Knight Academy, third floor sewing room. I was supposed to be on bed rest. Doctor said bed rest because my feet were swollen like bread. Alexander said bed rest because he read on Google that 8-month pregnant CEOs should not sit at sewing machines for 8 hours. Mom said bed rest because she said Lane women always have fast birth and I should stay near sewing machines, not office. But I had a $200M company. $200M does not do bed rest. So I was in sewing room, sitting on floor, surrounded by fabric rolls, trying to fix the gold star patch Stella sewed on Alexander's butt-tux. The tux that ripped when he fell on runway 5 years ago. He still wears it every year for vow renewal. He says it's couture now. I say it's excuse to not buy new tux.Stella and Hope were with me. Stella, 5 years
Five years later.Lane Garden was different now.No longer just garden. Now it was Lane-Knight Academy — first floor is free fashion school for girls who can't afford design school, second floor is Stella and Hope's playroom, third floor is still sewing machines that go click-clack day and night. The garden still had red thread curtain, but now faded to pink by sun. We never replaced it. Because some things should fade and still stay.Today was not a fashion show. Today was vow renewal. Second vow renewal — we did one every year as promised in Clause 4.1, but this year was special. Fifth year. And second baby.I was 33 years old. CEO Lane-Knight, $200M brand now, 120 employees, TIME cover twice. But today, I was just Sophia, 7 months pregnant again, in same red qipao from first wedding, but let out 3 inches at belly. Stella herself sewed the extra fabric — crooked stitch, but I wore it proudly.Stella was 5 years old now, not baby tyrant anymore, but mini-CEO tyrant. She had her own t
One week after Stella's viral fall, I was in sewing room at 7 AM, alone, trying to fix Alexander's tux that ripped when he fell. The rip was small but it was right on butt — poetic.Door knocked. Not Maya's knock. Maya knocks like CEO — three fast. This knock was slow, scared."Come in."Door opened and Chloe stood there. She looked different. No Instagram makeup. Hair in ponytail, no extensions. She wore a plain white T-shirt, jeans that were not designer, and old sneakers. She held a small bag and a paper. And her belly. Her belly was big. 6 months pregnant, maybe 7.For a second, I thought I was seeing things. Last time I saw Chloe was at the copycat show, crying, wearing fake velvet."Can... can I come in?" she said, voice hoarse.I didn't say yes. I didn't say no. I just looked at her belly."How many months?" I asked."Seven," she whispered, hand automatically going to belly. "Seven months.""Whose?""Ethan's."The sewing room went silent. Only the clock ticking.Ethan. Of cours
Stella was 6 months old and already a tyrant. She had three nannies quit in one month because she only wanted to be held by two people: me, and Alexander — but only when Alexander was wearing his soft grey sweater, not his suit. If he wore suit, she screamed like we were torturing her."She has taste," Alexander said proudly, throwing his $5,000 Tom Ford jacket on the floor and putting on the $40 grey sweater from Uniqlo that Stella liked. "She knows quality.""She knows you look less scary without suit," I said, trying to work on Spring collection while Stella tried to eat my charcoal pencil.Mom said, "Sophia, you need to take Stella out. She stays in office too much. She needs to see other babies."So I had an idea. A terrible, brilliant, GoodNovel-reader-will-love-it idea.Starlight Baby First Fashion Show. Not for adults. For babies. 20 babies from our staff, all wearing mini Starlight outfits sewn by me at 2 AM while breastfeeding. And the finale would be Stella — 6 months, 18 p
