Emilia's POV

I did not sleep.

Hazel fell asleep almost as soon as her head touched the pillow on the cot across from mine, but I spent the entire night staring at the tent's ceiling, listening to the occasional cough outside and the soft crackling of the dying fire. I had gone over my escape plan so many times that I could recite every step in my head, yet I still had no idea what I would do once I got away from the rebels.

Get into the carriage. Stay hidden. Wait for the fighting to start.

Emilia's POV Kylo stood beside me, one hand pressed against his side as he surveyed the burned wagon and the broken doors of the nearby houses. His jaw was clenched, and there was something in his expression that made my stomach tighten. "Soldiers," he answered. "How do you know?" "Because I've seen this before. It's the same thing that happens everywhere." "Everywhere?" I repeated, looking around at the wreckage. "How can something like this happen everywhere?" "Emilia." He took a step forward, but his body suddenly swayed. I turned toward him, finally taking a proper look at his face. Almost all the color had drained from his cheeks, and the blood soaking through his shirt had spread down to his belt. His hand trembled against his side, and even standing upright seemed to require more strength than he had left. "Kylo?" "I'm fine." "You are most definitely not fine. You look like you've just crawled out of a grave." "I said I'm..." His knees suddenly gave out. I caught

Emilia's POV “So it was you,” Kylo said, his voice low and flat. “You took it.” “Took is a rather strong word.” “Emilia.” “Fine. You dropped it in the shed without even noticing, so I decided to keep it.” I let the pendant swing between my fingers. “You really should be more careful with your belongings.” “Give it back.” “Say please.” He stared at me for a moment, his jaw tightening as if he were seriously considering whether dealing with me was worth the trouble. “You cannot be serious.” “I am.” “Emilia.” “Kylo.” He let out a sharp breath through his nose, clearly running out of patience. “Give me the damn necklace.” I raised an eyebrow. “That is not how you ask.” His eyes narrowed. For a moment, I thought he might actually come toward me and take the necklace by force. Instead, he exhaled sharply. “Please.” “That sounded incredibly painful for you.” “Don't push your luck.” “Then try making it sound like you mean it.” He looked ready to strangle me. “Please give me

Emilia's POV "Thank God," I breathed. "Get me out of here. I want to be back at the palace immediately." The guard slowly removed his hand from my mouth, although his other arm remained firmly wrapped around my waist. "Keep your voice down, Your Highness. They are still nearby." "I know they are." I tried to push his arm away, but the moment I shifted my weight, my injured ankle gave out beneath me. He caught me before I could hit the ground, tightening his hold around my waist. "Where are the others? Where is Sir Rowan?" "Back at the palace, the last time I heard." He glanced over his shoulder, checking the trees behind us as the distant sounds of fighting gradually faded. "Come on. My horse is waiting up the slope. We need to leave before anyone realizes you are missing." I had no reason to argue. I let him guide me through the trees, concentrating on the familiar royal crest embroidered across his chest. The ground was steep and covered in wet leaves, making every step painful

I had gone over my escape plan so many times that I could recite every step in my head, yet I still had no idea what I would do once I got away from the rebels. Get into the carriage. Stay hidden. Wait for the fighting to start. Then run. Simple enough. Except for one small problem. What would I do after that? I would need to reach the main road, where a royal guard would eventually pass by. All I had to do was find one, and everything else would take care of itself. They would recognize me, take me back to the palace, and I could finally return to my normal life. Everything would be fine. It was supposed to be a comforting thought, but every time I tried to picture myself back at the palace, Kylo's voice crept in

  • The Rebel's Stolen Princess   Chapter 8: The Escape Plan

Emilia's POV By the time the sun began sinking behind the trees, I had stopped expecting anything good to happen to me, including finding a way to escape. Hazel had made me stay on the cot with my foot propped up for the rest of the afternoon, which was the only reason I had not been sent back to the washing tub. She kept me company by telling me embarrassing stories about Dane, including the time he fell asleep inside a flour barrel and woke up covered in white powder. Apparently, his mother screamed so loudly that half the village came running. I had laughed more than I intended to, which was embarrassing enough on its own. Then a loud whoop came from outside, followed by a cheer that nearly shook the walls of the tent. "What was that?" I asked, sitting up. Hazel grinned as she tossed the blanket aside. "That, Your Highness, means you've been saved from kitchen duty." "I thought I was already saved from kitchen duty." "Temporarily. Now you're officially saved." She pulled the

Emilia's POV “So,” Hazel began after a moment, “how does it feel to be the most entertaining person in camp?” I slowly turned toward her. “What?” “Oh, don't look so surprised. I heard you ran into the forest last night in your wedding dress.” I groaned, wishing the ground would open up and swallow me whole. “Please tell me that's not what everyone's talking about.” “Dane's told the story three times already, and Pip's been putting on a whole performance behind the cook tent.” I stared at her in disbelief. “A performance?” “He's playing you.” Hazel pressed her lips together, struggling to contain her laughter. “Although, from what I heard, his version involves a lot more screaming and dramatic falling.” “Wonderful. Just wonderful.” “I know. Pip's very committed to his art.” I shot her a flat look, but that only made her laugh harder. I tried to stay annoyed as I imagined Pip running around camp with his arms flailing, pretending to be a runaway princess. Unfortunately, the pi
