I held my hand on her lower back as we went downstairs to where Sal waited for me. I wanted to speak to him about Maria. As luck would have it, Maria came around the corner. She did a double take when she saw me with Darina. Just the woman I was looking for.

“Maria.” I called out to her.

“Yes, Nico?” She couldn’t hide the bruise on her face. Darina gave her a nice shiner.

“What happened to your face?” I asked, my hand stroking Darina’s back, reveling in the feel of her skin underneath my palm.

“It’s nothing. I walked into a door.” She lied to my face. I hate it when they lie.

I grabbed her right hand, pulling her towards me. Her dark eyes went wide with fear.

“Sal, what do I do with liars?” I drawled, watching her face grow pale.

“Sometimes you cut out their tongues, Boss.” Sal smirked; his face contorted with pleasure.

“Tell me the truth, Maria.” My thumb circled the back of her hand slowly.

“Darina punched me in the face.” She said, and her gaze went to Darina. I saw the moment
