“Your Majesty…” the captain said, dropping to one knee. “The spy didn’t escape.” He swallowed hard. “She was murdered before we could question her.”

The council chamber erupted the instant the words landed. I gripped the edge of the war table, still raw from the parchment we’d found clenched in a dead man’s fist the day before, and forced myself to listen through the noise instead of drowning in it.

The servant had died in the most secure cell in Silvercrest’s dungeon. No visitors. No windows. No way in that hadn’t been sealed and guarded by our own hand-picked men.

A black moon symbol had burned itself into the stone floor beneath her body, edges still smoking faintly when the guards found her … a signature no one in that room had seen in twenty years.

She’d lived long enough to say one thing before the poison finished its work, a guard told us, voice unsteady, hands still trembling around the report he clutched.

The Queen carries… the Eclipse…

Half the room looked at me, faces pale, uncertain whether to look away or keep staring. The other half looked at each other, unsure whether she’d meant me at all, or something older, something none of us had named yet.

If someone could reach a prisoner inside Silvercrest’s most guarded cell, poison her without a single guard noticing, and vanish clean, our enemy didn’t need to break in anymore.

They were already inside, and they had been for longer than any of us wanted to admit.

Lucien arrived not long after, a leather case under one arm, weeks of gathered intelligence he’d apparently kept from even his own council, his expression grimmer than I’d seen it since the summit hall. He didn’t address the room.

He looked only at me. “I need to speak with you. Alone.”

Cassian’s jaw went tight enough to ache beside me, his hand drifting toward his sword hilt out of pure instinct. “Absolutely not.”

I held up a hand before the argument could grow teeth. “It’s fine.”

It wasn’t, not really … nothing about being alone with Lucien had felt fine in months, my pulse still doing something complicated every time he stood too close … but something in his face told me this mattered more than my discomfort, more than Cassian’s protectiveness, more than any of it.

The war chamber door had barely closed behind us before he laid the case open on the table, hands moving fast, urgent, none of the careful stillness he usually wore like armor.

Maps. Intercepted letters, their wax seals broken and resealed by someone who’d clearly read them more than once, judging by the worn creases along every fold. And there, stamped across three separate pages, the same black moon insignia that had scorched itself into my dungeon floor only hours before.

Then I saw the name.

High Elder Malachor.

My stomach dropped straight through the floor, my hand going instinctively to the table’s edge to steady myself.

The elder who’d blessed the ceremony that ended my life as Lucien’s Luna. The one who’d sat with my father through the worst nights of the search, hand on his shoulder, voice steady with false comfort I now understood had been rehearsed. A man every Alpha on this continent trusted without question, myself included, once, back when trust still came easily to me.

Lucien’s hands were shaking now, faintly, the paper trembling in his grip like it weighed more than parchment should. “He didn’t just manipulate Selene.”

I couldn’t make myself ask. He told me anyway, each sentence landing like a struck bell.

“He orchestrated the attack twenty years ago. He ordered your kidnapping.” His voice cracked on the last piece, and for a moment he looked less like an Alpha and more like a man drowning in his own guilt. “He personally approved the rejection ceremony. Every word I said in that hall, he wrote into the ritual himself. I thought I was following tradition. I was following him.”

The room tilted around me. I gripped the table’s edge to keep myself upright, my own pulse roaring loud enough to drown out whatever he said next, my knees threatening to give the way they had the night he’d first said those ritual words to me.

Orion burst through the door before either of us could say another word … someone had clearly run straight to him the moment Malachor’s name left this room, his chest heaving like he’d run the whole distance himself.

“Arrest him,” he ordered, already turning back toward the hall, his voice a low, dangerous thing I rarely heard from him. “Now.”

A messenger nearly collided with him on the way out, chest heaving, already shaking his head before he’d caught his breath, sweat streaking down his temple.

“His residence is empty, Your Majesty. Every servant dead. Every record burned.”

He swallowed hard, throat working. “He was gone hours before the spy was killed.”

Orion went very still, the fury in him curdling into something closer to dread, his hands curling slowly into fists at his sides like he needed somewhere to put the helplessness.

I stopped listening to the rest of it. My eyes had caught on one page still sitting untouched at the bottom of Lucien’s case … no maps, no letters, just dense handwriting that made my chest go tight the instant I saw it, something about the slant of it tugging at a memory I couldn’t quite place.

Not a report.

A prophecy, written in ink faded soft with age, the parchment brittle enough to worry it might crumble under my fingers.

And the hand that had written it, looping and familiar and impossible, matched my mother’s journal line for line. I would have known that handwriting anywhere … I’d traced it in candlelight a hundred nights, searching for her voice in every curve of it.

I lifted the page, my hands beginning to shake harder than they had all day.

“This prophecy…” I whispered.

Lucien leaned over my shoulder to read it, and I watched every trace of color drain out of his face.

“…how did your mother know his name?”

POV: Lucien“Four children?” I whispered, unable to breathe. “Tell me I heard that wrong…”No one answered.Because no one could.⸻The dates arranged themselves in my head before I could stop them, counting backward without my permission, landing exactly where I feared they would.Mine.Every child she carried was mine. The hall had gone utterly silent around me, every Alpha present watching to see what I’d do … deny it, celebrate it, break apart where they could all witness it. I gave them none of that.I bowed to Queen Felicia instead, spine straight, perfectly correct, every inch the disciplined commander I’d trained myself to be for exactly this kind of moment. Then I turned and walked out before my face could betray anything my body hadn’t already.I felt more than one rival Alpha’s gaze follow me out, something like grudging respect in it I hadn’t earned and didn’t want.⸻The corridor beyond the hall was empty, and that was the only reason I let myself fall apart in it, my bac

“Tell me one thing, Lucien,” I said, refusing to look away. “If the Moon Goddess gave you one chance to undo that day… would you still reject me?”The question silenced the room.Lucien didn’t answer immediately. He closed his eyes.“…No.”“I’d burn my own crown before I lost you again.”⸻I ordered everyone else out the moment the words left him, the war table still scattered with Malachor’s stolen files, my pulse hammering harder than I wanted him to see. My hands stayed folded in front of me, steady on the outside, shaking underneath where he couldn’t see them. The silence that followed once the doors shut was heavier than any argument we’d ever had, thick enough that I heard my own breathing over it.“Commander of Blackthorn’s forces,” I said finally. “Nothing more.”I laid the rest out plainly, refusing to let my voice soften even when something in his face made softening tempting. No private conversations. No attempts to win me back. No mention of the past unless I raised it mys

“Who’s the father?” Orion asked quietly.I couldn’t make myself say his name.He closed his eyes.“…Lucien.”It wasn’t a question. It was the sound of a father’s heart breaking for his daughter.⸻“The spy can wait,” Orion told the guard, not even turning his head. “My daughter cannot.”The guard vanished back down the path, and my father sank onto the stone bench beneath the moon trees, waiting for me to finish what I’d barely started, his hands folded so tightly together his knuckles had gone pale.I told him everything. The crystals. The healer’s trembling hands. Not one child.Four.His face moved through disbelief, then grief, then something harder … rage that had nowhere to land … before settling into a guilt so raw it made my own chest ache to watch it settle over him, his shoulders curling inward like the weight of it was physical.“If I’d found you sooner,” he said, voice cracking down the middle, “…none of this would have happened.”I had no comfort to offer him. “Your Majesty…” the royal healer whispered, her hand frozen above my stomach. “When was the last time you shared a Moon Bond with your mate?”I felt every drop of blood leave my face.“…Before he rejected me.”The healer closed her eyes.“Oh… Moon Goddess.”⸻I’d slipped out of my chambers before sunrise, careful to avoid Cassian’s watchful eyes and Orion’s early rounds, my bare feet silent against cold stone, my heart hammering the entire way down those corridors like I was doing something wrong instead of something necessary. I told myself the pulses in the garden had been exhaustion, nothing more.I told the healer the same lie the moment I sat down across from her.She didn’t believe it for a second, her eyes narrowing slightly even as her hands stayed gentle. The moment she laid her silver crystals across my stomach, they lit up brighter than I’d ever seen them glow, throwing sudden light across the whole chamber, and her calm, professional expression cracked straight down the mi

“Your Majesty…” the blood-soaked guard gasped, collapsing onto one knee. “The northern border has fallen.”The room went silent. Then he looked straight at me.“They weren’t looking for land… they were looking for you.”⸻The torches had barely been relit after the dark voice in the summit hall vanished as fast as it came, guards still sweeping the corridors for whoever had spoken, when this new horror staggered through the doors and finished what the first one started.Entire patrols slaughtered along the northern border. No pack insignia on the attackers. Military precision, not raiding chaos. And one question, repeated to every dying soldier before the killing blow.Where is the Chosen Queen. One soldier, the guard said, voice cracking, had lived just long enough to whisper that the attackers knew our patrol routes before they arrived. Someone inside Silvercrest had handed them the map. This wasn’t an invasion. It was a hunt, and I was the only thing they were hunting.⸻Orion call
