Phoebe's POV. 

I was agitated by his tone. Why was he sounding this way or what was he thinking?. 

I stared at his dead panned face and I got scared for a moment. Beta Axel and I were just chatting and nothing more than that though I was touching his shoulders and arms at intervals because I was in the moment of humor but that shouldn't get anyone angry. 

Did he think I was flirting with his Beta? 

The last thing I wanted to do was to flirt with any male here, no matter how attractive they looked. Beta Axel was a handsome man but he wasn't my type and even though he was, I wasn't ready for any kind of relationship. 

Even if I was flirting with his Beta that shouldn't get him this annoyed or vexed but I was still a slave to him, therefore I had to know my place. 

Maybe the Alpha thought that I was going to enchant and tempt his Beta and friend into a relationship to stay permanently in the pack. Well, he was certainly wrong about that. 

I wasn't ready for any sort of commitment or mating not after the rejection that I had gone through. My mind suddenly went to Mark. 

Was he looking for me? 

"What do you mean by what am I doing here?, I came to check on our dear Phoebe" Beta Axel replied Alpha Kingston. 

Our dear Phoebe? 

I wondered what he meant by that but it made me feel good to be accepted. 

Beta Axel further explained "Alright, you didn't ask me to come here but I wanted to check up on her after the drama I witnessed yesterday, I was worried about her" 

He came to see me without the Alpha instructing him to do it. That means he had lied earlier when he said that the Alpha asked him to check on me today. 

But I saw nothing amiss about his visit because the Alpha himself had instructed him yesterday to stay with me,so why was it different today?. 

What was going on?. 

"I was just worried about her because your father or sister could barge in here and try to harass her, those were my thoughts and it prompted my visitation" Beta Axel added. 

Alpha Kingston's stiffened face relaxed and my mind suddenly became at rest. 

"I am glad that you worry about her but you have other duties to tend to, more important duties" Alpha Kingston said. 

His words stung me. More important duties?, that meant that I wasn't important and no one had to pay attention to me. 

I always allowed their show of kindness to get to me, maybe because I wasn't used to kindness and care that was why I kept forgetting my place. 

I was no longer an Alpha's daughter but a slave. I had to remember that. 

I sighed and couldn't hide my hurt expression. Alpha Kingston confused me because one minute he showed me kindness and the next minute he said things to hurt me. I don't know why his words hurt but they do hurt me and also my wolf. 

"I meant that the Pack and I need the presence of a beta and you aren't going to spend every minute here without performing duties that are accorded you" Alpha Kingston rephrased his statement and those beautiful gray eyes of his stared I tensely at me. 

It was like I could read his eyes;It was telling me that he didn't mean what he said earlier and that I was important. 

Wait a minute, did I just get 

his words by just staring into his eyes?.What just happened?. 

"Well as you can see, she is safe and in good health;so you have no reason to be here anymore" Alpha Kingston frowned at Beta Axel. 

"Leave" 

Alpha Kingston's tone was possessive and authoritative. It was like a mate defending and protecting his mate from other wolves. 

Beta Axel nodded and rose up to his feet. 

"I will be leaving now,see you Phoebe and don't worry because I will tell you more jokes when I have the chance '' Beta Axel smiled. 

"I don't know why some people are jealous. '' Beta Axel's lips formed into a lopsided smirk before he left. 

Jealous?, why would Alpha Kingston be jealous?. 

I saw Alpha Kingston glare at him before Beta Axel left the room. 

I reasoned Beta Axel's words to be a way to form some humor in the tense moment and it made me chuckle inwardly. 

I wanted him to stay a little longer and keep me company in this lonely room but I dared not spout a word. 

My lips curved into a little smile and I turned to Alpha Kingston who walked closer to me. 

"You shouldn't be laughing so much, the doctor said that you still had some internal injuries" He cautioned and I could feel the care from his voice. 

"I know but Beta Axel was so funny that I couldn't stop laughing" I chuckled lightly. 

"His jokes are dry" Alpha Kingston rolled his eyes. 

"Just a little bit" I giggled. 

I stayed silent after that but he kept staring at me and I looked down shyly, unable to keep staring at him. 

He had this possessive look in his eyes that I couldn't comprehend but I like it that he was possessive and so did my wolf but why was that? 

"Have you had your bath?" He suddenly asked and my cheeks flushed. 

I slowly nodded in negative “No I haven't had my bath yet” 

I wondered how he got to know about that or did he smell a stench from my body.

How embarrassing… 

I didn't want to be tagged as a dirty person, so I justified my actions for being dirty. 

"I have some aches around my body and it isn't too easy to bathe without help" I replied, still avoiding his gaze. 

"Should I help you then?" He asked and I gasped in shock.
