Dane’s POV

The dawn mist clung to the castle like a lingering ghost when I stepped out of the healer’s wing.

Donna had survived the burning. Barely.

The healers said the flames that had scarred her chest weren’t mortal.

A rejection from the Moon Goddess herself. I didn’t understand it, and that made it worse.

For two days, I hadn’t gone near her. Watching her hurt had done something to me, something I couldn’t name.

The moment I saw that scorched letter in her hand, my first instinct wasn’t anger. It was fear.

Fear that I was losing her, not to another man, but to a past I could never reach.

Mother found me by the window that morning, staring into the grey. “You’ve punished her enough,” Mother said softly. “Now go and remind her she’s still here.”

“She tried to contact her old pack,” I muttered. “If I had been any slower….”

“She’s not your prisoner, Dane.” Her voice was calm, but there was steel in it. “She’s your mate. And sometimes the heart acts out when the soul feels trapped.”
