Almost Caught

Eugene pulled his cloak tighter around himself as he and Max stared at the woman standing in front of them, her position frozen mid-motion.

He had no idea who she was but judging from the look she gave max and the one he returned back, there was something he was not being told and that alone wasn't something he liked.

Eugene took his time to study the woman standing in front of them, his eyes moving through her in a harmless, curious way.

She wore a simple commuting cloak people usually wore to protect themselves from the cold, the hood pulled low, but shock flashed across her face before she could mask it.

Her fingers loosened instinctively, though they lingered a heartbeat longer than necessary, as if letting go required effort.

“I—” she started.

“Wrong person,” Max snapped, stepping back sharply, his expression hardening into offended distance. “You’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

Eugene's eyebrow lifted in surprise because he had not expected to hear that, judging from the way

The laughter that entered the herbal shop was too loud for such a small space. It scraped against Eugene’s nerves like a blade dragged slowly across stone but he chose to remain quiet without attracting attention to himself or Max.Two young women stepped inside, their cheeks flushed from the cold air outside, voices still hushed from whatever conversation had followed them through the door. One brushed past Max without a glance, the other nearly collided with a hanging bundle of dried leaves.“Careful,” the herbalist said distractedly.“Sorry,” the girl replied, then laughed again. “I still can’t believe it.”“Believe what?” her companion asked, lowering her voice only slightly.Eugene’s fingers stilled around the silver in his palm.Max’s head tilted just enough to listen.“The guards,” the first girl said. “The ones assigned to the dungeon.”The shop seemed to shrink.“They were executed this morning,” she continued. “All three of them.”Max’s breath caught.Eugene did not move bu

  • The Rejected Omega's Redemption    Beneath Their Cloaks

The fire had burned low by the time Eugene finally spoke. Its embers glowed softly, casting long shadows across the modest room where Becca sat on the edge of the bed, her hands folded protectively over her stomach. The house was quiet, too quiet, as if even the walls were listening. Mira had gone to sleep earlier, exhaustion finally claiming her, and Max stood near the window, pretending to check the latch for the third time.Eugene watched Becca carefully and she looked the same, yet not at all. There was something fragile about her now, not weak, never that, but precious in a way that made his chest ache. The knowledge that she carried life, his child, had rewired something deep inside him. Every breath she took felt like a responsibility, every shadow outside the door felt like a threat.“I need to go to pack town,” Eugene said quietly.Becca looked up at once. “No.”He smiled faintly. “I haven’t even explained yet.”“You don’t need to,” she replied, shaking her head. “I alrea

The first scream echoed through the lower courtyard just after dawn and it was loud enough to rattle even the strongest man who claimed nothing could move him.The sound was so sharp that it cut through the fog like a blade, sharp and final, bouncing off the cold stone walls of Blackwood Mansion before dissolving into a silence that felt heavier than noise. Servants froze mid-step and maids straightened instinctively. Somewhere in the mansion trouble had started to take root and it made everyone hairs to stand up straight.Jack heard it from the eastern corridor and he stopped walking. His jaw tightened, his breath slowing as if his body already knew what his mind was trying not to accept.Just as he thought everything was back to normal, another scream followed, shorter this time, strangled, ending too abruptly and Jack closed his eyes.“They’re dead,” he murmured under his breath. He didn’t need to ask who. He already knew because he had caused it.The dungeon guards had been dragg

Morning came gently to the cabin, slipping through the narrow windows in pale streaks of gold. Eugene sat at the table, sharpening a blade with slow, thoughtful strokes. Across from him, Becca worked with practiced care, crushing dried leaves and roots in a stone mortar. For a while, neither spoke until Max’s laughter drew Eugene’s attention.Eugene glanced toward the open doorway leading to the back of the cabin. Max stood just outside, splitting kindling with Mira nearby, her sleeves rolled, her hair loosely braided. She was saying something Eugene couldn’t hear, her hands moving as she spoke. Max paused mid-swing to listen, a faint smile tugging at his mouth unlike the face he had worn for days.Eugene’s brows lifted. He leaned closer to Becca and murmured, “Am I imagining things, or is Max… smiling?”Becca followed his gaze. Her lips curved softly as she watched Mira brush sawdust from her hands, scolding Max lightly about splinters. “No,” Becca said gently. “You’re not imagin

  • The Rejected Omega's Redemption    The Whispers

The silence stretched into one heartbeat then two.Desmond’s eyes narrowed. “I said bring the prisoner.”The command cracked like a whip across the execution square. The crowd shifted uneasily now, anticipation curdling into confusion. Wolves exchanged glances, murmurs rising in low waves. The guards stationed near the dungeon entrance did not move immediately, and that hesitation, brief but unmistakable, sent a ripple of unease through the gathering.Seraphina’s fingers tightened against the fabric of her gown while Ava felt her breath catch. Finally, footsteps echoed from the stone passage leading up from beneath the square. Two guards emerged, their faces pale, their posture stiff in a way that spoke of fear rather than discipline. They stopped several paces from the platform and every eye fixed on them.Desmond’s voice dropped, deadly calm. “Where is she?”The guards exchanged a look. One swallowed hard and stepped forward, dropping to one knee so abruptly it looked like he mig
