Becca stirred the pot of soup from where she sat on a small stool beside the bed where Eugene lay.

Across the room, Mira was crouched near the cold hearth, trying to light a small fire with trembling hands.

Her long hair fell over her face, and the tip of her tongue poked out slightly between her lips like she always did when she was focused.

After a few frustrated sparks, a tiny flame came on and Mira exhaled in triumph.
