Isabella’s pov

The door to my chambers didn’t just close; it slammed with a violence that vibrated through the soles of my feet. I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. My vision was swimming in a toxic shade of crimson as I reached for the nearest thing—a porcelain vase gifted by the southern delegates—and hurled it against the stone hearth.

It shattered into a thousand jagged teeth.

"Why?" I shrieked, the sound tearing at my throat. "Why does it always happen like this?"

I grabbed the silk hangings o

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   Back to work

Elara’s povBy the time I came back, the sun was down and the mansion was alive.Lamps blazed in every window. Servants hurried through the halls carrying platters and bottles and armloads of flowers. I could hear the clatter of cutlery from the dining room, the ring of laughter, the low drone of a harp being tuned. Somewhere, a cook was shouting at a boy about the soup.I slipped through the side door and up the back stairs, my arms aching, my hair half down, a streak of dried broth across my skirt. I'd stayed too long at the center. There had been a woman in labor, and a child with a broken arm, and a man whose fever had spiked again just as I was about to leave. I'd barely had time to splash my face at the pump.I closed the door to my room, leaned against it, and let myself breathe.*Seven o'clock.* I had half an hour. Maybe less.I crossed to the wardrobe and pulled out the gown I'd chosen, a soft sapphire silk Elias had once bought me in the city, cut high at the throat and simp

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   Out of turn

Elara’s POV Elias came home at dusk with blood on his sleeve and a look on his face I couldn't read.I was in the doorway of the health center when I saw him coming up the lane, tall and dark against the fading light, flanked by a pair of the village's own men. Not guards. Farmers, a cobbler, a baker with flour on his apron. They walked beside him as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and every few steps, one of them would glance up at him with something very close to wonder."What happened to you?" I asked."I went for a walk.""You're bleeding.""A little." He caught my hand and kissed my knuckles, quick and warm. "It's nothing. I'll tell you later.""Elias...""Come back to the house tonight," he said. "Please. For the feast."I stared at him. "The what?”He announced it at supper.I wasn't there. I only heard about it afterward, in pieces, from Frey, who had it from a maid who'd been standing beside the sideboard with a tray of dishes. Apparently Elias had walked int

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   Alpha Heir

Elias’s POV She was furious with me. I was certain of it.She hadn't said so, not in so many words. She had stood in the middle of my old room with her chin high and her eyes bright, and told me that she had forgiven me, and then she had walked out and left me alone with a cold bath, a colder bed, and a ceiling I stared at until the candle burned down.*You'll have to earn the rest.*I deserved it. I knew I did. I'd stood in my father's house for a week while the worst of it lay two miles away, and I hadn't once asked what I was not being shown. I'd been too busy trying to keep the peace. Too busy being the dutiful son, the quiet heir, the man who'd walked away and wasn't allowed to ask questions about what he'd left behind. But that wasn't the thought that kept me awake. The thought that kept me awake was my mother's face.*Why?*I turned it over and over in the dark, like a stone in my fist. *Why would they do it?* The health center wasn't a rival. It wasn't a threat. It was a hall

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   Forgiven?

Elara’s povI didn't go back to the mansion that morning. Not at first. There was too much to do.Elias worked beside me through the dawn and well into the day. He didn't ask what to do. He simply watched me for a few minutes, learned the rhythm of the ward, and then began to move through it with the same quiet, grim efficiency he brought to everything. He hauled water. He scrubbed floors on his hands and knees with his sleeves pushed up past his elbows. He carried a boy twice his own weight in blankets from the cart that arrived, at his order, loaded with food and medicine from the pack's own stores.Nobody had ever seen the Alpha's son on his knees in a gutter. They stared. Then, slowly, one by one, they started to help.By midday, the hall smelled of lye instead of rot. By afternoon, a pair of local healers had arrived, summoned from villages up and down the ridge, with their own satchels and their own tired, hopeful faces. I handed my notes to the eldest and showed the younger one

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   A standoff

Elara’s povDestroyed. The word rang in my skull like a struck bell, and for a few long seconds I couldn't hear anything else.I stood in the center of that filthy hall, among a hundred and forty frightened people, and looked at the man who had just said it. A lean, scarred soldier with a tired face and a spear in his fist, calmly informing us that his orders were to burn down a building full of the sick and dying. And behind him, forty more men who'd come to help him do it."Say that again," I said.My voice was very quiet. It carried anyway. The lieutenant's gaze flicked to me. "My lady?""Say it again. Slowly. I want to be certain I understood.""The Luna has ordered that the building be cleared and torched." He spoke with a flat, careful courtesy, the way a man recites a grocery list. "The patients are to be turned out. The structure is to be razed. Those are the orders.""The patients are

  • The Rejected Plus-Size Mate   Kidnapped

Elias’s POV "Kidnapped."The word came out of me in a whisper, and then it came out again as a roar."*Kidnapped?*"The guard in front of me flinched. He was young, barely twenty, with a tremor in his hands and mud on his boots, and he'd run the length of the house to find me. He'd found me in my wife's empty room, on my knees, with a black glove crushed in my fist."Yes, my lord," he stammered. "A patrol came to the kitchen gate not an hour ago. They said they'd seen men take the lady through the lower village. Hooded men. They said she'd been carried off to the old health center, my lord. By force.""By *whom?*""They didn't know. They only said that the lady was taken, and that you were needed."I stood. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else.*The health center.* The place my parents had forbidden us to go. The place my wife had asked to see.*Taken.*It was impossible. She had locked her door from the inside. There had been no struggle, no noise. And yet the room was em
