Lyra

I stood in that hallway and let those words find every single part of me, something I didn't even know I was still holding onto just... broke quietly.

That brother of mine would burn the entire world to make sure I was safe, I needed to stop looking for that man in Kael's face.

He wasn't in there anymore.

I walked back to the guest room, sat on the edge of the bed, and stared at my hands in my lap until the window went from black to grey to the pale gold of early morning.

By the time the smell of breakfast drifted up through the floorboards I'd already been dressed for two hours, sitting at the window watching the pack's early risers move across the grounds below.

Warriors heading to the training field. Juveniles chasing each other between the trees. A group of elderly women crossing toward the meeting hall with their morning tea.

A whole world that had kept moving without me.

I went downstairs.

The dining hall was warm and loud and completely indifferent to my existence. Pack members filled every chair, conversations running over each other, someone laughing too loud near the window, the smell of fresh bread and hot coffee hanging over everything like a promise.

Nobody had saved me a seat.

I stood in the doorway for a moment just taking it in. Watching eyes land on me and slide away.

I turned and walked to the kitchen.

The kitchen went quiet the second I pushed the door open. Four staff members were looking at me with some variation of the same expression. Like I was something that had wandered in from outside and was now touching the furniture.

The head cook was a tall woman with a sharp face and flour dusted across her dark apron. She looked me up and down once.

"Dining hall's through there," she said with disgust.

"The buffet's cleared and there's nothing to eat.."

"It was cleared twenty minutes ago, that's not my fault" She turned back to the counter like she was done with me

"Is there anything left?"

She didn't answer immediately. Then she turned, picked up a plate from beside the sink and held it out without walking toward me.

I crossed the kitchen to take it. It was last night's stew. A heel of bread gone hard at the edges sitting beside it. Scraped together from what the pots had left behind after everyone who mattered had already eaten.

"That's what's left." Her voice was flat as a closed door. "Take it or don't."

"Thank you," I said.

Something shifted in her expression. Barely. Like she'd loaded a gun and I'd just refused to flinch.

I walked out before she could reload.

….

I sat at the far end of the dining hall with my back against the wall.

It's an old habit I got in Ironmoo, you never sat with your back exposed. You never put food down where you couldn't see it. You never looked up from your plate too slowly when someone sat near you because slow meant distracted and distracted meant vulnerable.

My body still ran those rules whether I wanted it to or not.

I ate fast and without looking up. The stew was cold and slightly over-salted and it was genuinely better than most of what I'd eaten for the last three years. That wasn't self-pity. That was just the truth.

I was almost finished when the chair beside me scraped back.

My head came up before I finished deciding to move it. That Reflex and a sudden movement near your food in Ironmoor meant you were about to lose it.

Darian dropped into the seat like he owned it. Like he owned most things. He looked rested and annoyingly put together, like a man who had slept a full eight hours and taken his time with breakfast. He looked at my plate.

"That's all you're eating?"

"Good morning," I said and went back to my stew.

Four seconds of silence. Which for Darian was practically a spiritual achievement.

"You really did learn a lot in there." His voice had that easy conversational tone he used when he was about to say something that wasn't easy or conversational at all. "The whole eating scraps routine is very compelling."

He tilted his head slightly. "Is the tragic expression something you've been working on or does it just come naturally now?"

I set my spoon down and looked at him properly for the first time since he sat down.

"Are you this exhausting with everyone," I said, "or am I just lucky?"

Something sparked behind his eyes. "There she is."

"Don't start Darian."

"I'm just saying—"

"I know what you're saying." I picked my spoon back up. "You've been saying it since yesterday so wrap it up."

His jaw tightened….just slightly. I knew that jaw. I knew every version of that expression. I knew this one meant he was done being casual.

"The victims' families are gathering this afternoon." His voice is flat now and hard underneath. "Real people, Lyra. People who lost sons and fathers and brothers because of what happened to that battle plan." He watched my face like he was looking for something specific in it.

"You should be there. Stand in front of them, kneel down and say the words." His eyes dropped to my plate and back up. "Instead of sitting here eating cold leftovers where everyone can see you and feel sorry for you."

I swallowed and let the words settle down. The dining hall had gone quieter around us.

People pretending not to listen while absolutely listening. I picked up my plate and stood up.

His hand closed around my wrist roughly.

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. At those familiar fingers that had once laced through mine like they belonged there. "Let go of me, Darian."

  • The Rejected Prisoner Who Became the Alpha King's Mate    Chapter 47

Selene’s POVI couldn't sit still.I had crossed my bedroom so many times that the carpet beneath my feet might as well have memorized my footsteps. Every few seconds, I glanced toward the door as though Lyra might suddenly burst through it with a miracle in her hands. She has Six days, only six days.My nails dug into my palms.“Why does she have to be so damn stubborn?” I muttered, turning toward my friend. “Why can't she do one simple thing for me and for herself? If she cooperates, she walks away from all of this. She gets her freedom, I get what I want, and everyone wins.”My friend sat on the edge of my bed, watching me pace.“She threw the poison away,” I continued, my voice climbing with frustration. “Do you understand how insane that is? Kael gave her one job.”My friend shifted uncomfortably.“Selene, I know how badly you want the Alpha King, but what happened at the tournament was risky and—”“Shut up.”She stopped and I turned toward her.“We're not trying to kill him.”My

Zaren's Pov My shoulders ached by the time I reached Ashbourne, I didn't want any attention so I didn't use any means of conveying myself down here aside from my wolf. I wanted nothing aside from her scent and to see that she was still breathing. Then the courtyard opened, and every careful plan I had made burned away.Selene stood on the stone steps like a painting someone had paid too much for. She's in a pale dress and a lot of unnecessary jewelleries adorned on her. In her fingers was a piece of bread, still warm enough that a thin thread of steam lifted from the crust. She looked at Lyra with disgust and threw the bread on the floor. It hit the dirt near Lyra’s feet who had been asking questions but they ignored her.And to my horror Lyra bent and picked it up.For a moment I could not hear the courtyard. I could only hear my own blood. Gold slammed across my vision so hard the world narrowed to her hands, thin and careful, brushing dirt from food that should never have touched

Zaren’s POVI was sitting at the head of the council table, surrounded by elders who had spent the better part of an hour discussing numbers, routes, trade agreements, and territorial access but none of it was reaching me.My fingers rested against the polished wood while an elder from Oakwood Pack continued explaining the terms of the business agreement. Maps had been spread across the table, sealed documents placed beside them, and several wolves were already arguing over percentages.I heard the words but I simply wasn't listening. My mind was somewhere else. With Lyra.I could still feel the faint pull of the mate bond in my chest. It had been there since I woke, quiet but persistent, like someone tugging at a thread tied directly around my heart. Was she eating? Was she sleeping?Had Kael hurt her again?

  • The Rejected Prisoner Who Became the Alpha King's Mate    Chapter 44

Lyra’s POV“I didn't bring it.” My voice shook, but I forced myself to keep my eyes on Kael.“I threw it away.”For a second, nobody moved, then Kael's face changed. The anger in his eyes deepened until the brown of his irises disappeared beneath a violent red glow. His jaw tightened, and his fingers curled into fists at his sides.“You threw it away?”He stepped toward me.I instinctively moved backward, but my injured body betrayed me. My shoulder struck the wall, and pain shot down my back.Kael lifted his hand and I closed my eyes.“That's enough, Alpha Kael.”Darian's voice came from behind him and Kael's raised hand remained suspended in the air. Darian stepped between us, his expression strained as he looked at Kael.“Please…She's barely standing.”

  • The Rejected Prisoner Who Became the Alpha King's Mate    Chapter 43

Lyra’s POV“You stupid, ungrateful child!”My father’s yell was still ringing through my ears when his palm struck my cheek. My head snapped sideways, and the force of the blow sent me crashing onto the hardwood floor. Pain exploded across my face, followed by the sharp sting of my shoulder hitting the edge of the table. For a moment, I couldn't breathe. I lay there with one hand pressed against the floor, my hair falling across my face as I tried to steady myself.Ash stirred inside me.So faint I almost wondered if I had imagined it.For three years, my wolf had learned silence. Pain had taught her to hide, and Ironmoor had taught both of us that fighting back only made the punishment worse. But she was trying now…trying to rise and trying to protect me.My fingers curled against the floor as I pushed myself upright. My father's face was red with fury.“How dare you defy us?” he shouted, stepping toward me. “What the hell were you thinking? That you could become a warrior of Silver

  • The Rejected Prisoner Who Became the Alpha King's Mate    Chapter 42

Zaren's Pov Touch her and you'll lose everything you've built! The warning wasn't mine.My wolf had surfaced so violently that my vision blurred at the edges.I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms.“You wouldn't try that...”My father's gaze never wavered. “Whoecer your mate is, She is the cure to your curse.”The words struck harder than they should have.I already knew. I had spent years hearing the same thing whispered behind closed doors. Every healer, every priestess, every royal physician had eventually reached the same conclusion. My curse was eating away at me.Slowly and silently and somewhere along the way, the ancient laws of our bloodline had decided that my mate's blood could cure it.A convenient solution.A beautiful woman brought into the royal family, bonded through blood, drained of what made her mine, and turned into nothing more than medicine.I had refused that fate long before I knew Lyra existed. Now that I had found her, there was no force on ea
