Chapter Seven

“I’ve discussed with the priest, he will see us tomorrow in a private meeting.” Richardson said.

It was really happening. Richardson was divorcing her.

Ten years ago

“Do you think you would ever divorce me?” Megan asked. They were returning from their law class.

“You always ask such ridiculous questions Megan.” Young Richardson said.

“I’m just curious. It is allowed so, I was just wondering.”

“You’re my mate.” He said plainly, looking her dead in the eyes.

“I love you, Megan.” He added. Megan turned red.

It was the first time he ever said that he loved her.

Richardson laughed at her reaction.

“I do love you, Megan. I can’t imagine a life without you so no, divorcing you will hurt me more than it will hurt you.” He said.

Present

“Okay.” Megan said numb.

“Megan…” Richardson said. “You do understand right?”

“Goodnight, your majesty.” She wasn’t going to show him any emotion. He didn’t deserve that.

Megan left his office and headed for her quarters, it was already past the usual time she retired for the day.

“Megan!” Megan froze. She had successfully avoided Aspen for the past month except their almost encounter in the garden and now Aspen was right in front of her quarters.

“I had been giving you space knowing how surprised you must feel about the whole thing.” Aspen started.

“Surprised?” Megan thought to herself.

“I want you to know this wasn’t my intention. It all just happened.” Aspen said, tears pooling at her eyes. Megan didn’t buy it.

“I certainly didn’t want to take your husband or steal your position. Ric explained everything, we need this so that our child will be legitimate. It’s for the pack.”

That statement was starting to tick her off, ‘for the pack’. Sounded like mockery to her face.

“Ric?” Megan asked.

“Sorry, Richard.” Aspen said. “I hope you can forgive me, we’re best friends!” Aspen added.

That single statement threw Megan over the edge and she slapped Aspen right across her cheek.

“Megan! What do you think you’re doing?!” She heard Richardson from behind her.

“So it was a trap.” Megan said. “That’s more like you, Aspen.” Megan said looking down at Aspen who was dramatically sitting on the floor, holding her cheek.

“What has gotten into you?!” Richardson asked, grabbing her shoulders rather painfully.

“Apologize to Aspen this instant!” He yelled at Megan.

“What if I do not?” She asked.

“If you will not apologize, I will not provide a room for you in my castle after our divorce. Which was my initial plan as we were once married. I will not have you harming the mother of my child.” He said, a slap to Megan.

“So be it, your majesty.” Megan said.

She looked up at him and entered her room but not before noticing the slight smirk on Aspen’s face.

Aspen’s plan was all coming together

Two years ago.

Aspen had just returned from her shopping in town.

Her parents were waiting for her in the living room, viscount and viscountess Bridget.

Her parents hated the rule of Richardson and Megan.

This was because when the kingdom was transitioning, Megan and Richardson appointed titles to the families they deemed noble.

Megan’s parents were titled and duke and duchess while the Bridget’s were titled as Viscount and Viscountess.

A title, yes but was nothing compared to the title of duke and duchess.

Ever since then, her parents have hated Megan, believing she was biased towards her own family.

“Hello mom, dad.” Aspen said and dropped her parasol.

“It’s been three years. Aspen still hasn’t provided an heir.”

“I wonder if there are some issues with the queen conceiving.” Aspen kissed her teeth.

Megan wasn’t any queen. A queen that cannot provide an heir is no queen but a figurehead.

“Maybe you can offer to be the king’s mistress. I’m certain no daughter of mine is infertile.”

Aspen laughed, “how? I’m not even allowed in the castle. Daughter of a Viscount seeing the queen, they would never allow it! And Megan doesn’t even send for me.”

Megan never sent for her because she was always out of the kingdom on some assignment or the other.

“It’s alright child, it will play out. Leave it to me.”

Was her dream going to become realized? She had loved Richardson since she first laid her eyes on him.

Her and Megan were teenagers and Richardson had come to visit Mega with the biggest bouquet of flowers she had ever seen.

She was jealous. Why did Megan get to marry the best man ever just because she was a Brighton?

She hated that she had to act like she was happy for Megan when she actually wanted her fiancé.

Could her parents actually pull something that would make her have Richardson?

The present.

Aspen’s dream was coming true! She made sure to approach Megan when she was upset and stationed her maids close by so they would hear the commotion!

It was only a matter of time until the word spread like wildfire to everyone.

Megan was going to know what it felt like to be the subject of mockery with no one on her side!
