Chapter 9

Author: Sue Purple
Leon had always taken my sensibility for granted. Now he finally understood that I had spent my life tolerating a pack of wolves.

He let out a bestial howl and lunged forward, trying to strangle that malicious Emma. But the police held him back.

By the time Leon left the police station, night had fallen. He wandered the cold streets like a lost soul, walking aimlessly until he found himself standing before my grave.

My photo on the headstone still wore that same bright smile. He dropped to his knees with a heavy thud. The freezing stone beneath him reminded him of how cold my body had been that day in the snow.

"Sarah… I'm sorry… I'm sorry…" he repeated, breaking down completely. Only after I was gone did he finally shed the tears that should have come long ago.

Emma was the most devastated of all. Overnight, she went from a spoiled princess to the target of nationwide condemnation. Even the family who had always indulged her every whim began to turn on her."Mom, Dad, Leon, please believe me. I really didn't mean to…" she begged, using tears to win them back, but no one paid attention.Leon only looked at her with weary eyes."Emi, are you still going to lie even now?" he asked. At that moment, Michelle delivered the third and most damning piece of evidence to the police station. The pinhole camera I had installed in the operating room had recorded the most crucial evidence. In the video, the surgeon haggled with Emma."Ms. Lawson, this kidney came from a top athlete, but it's not in peak condition anymore. On the black market, it could fetch only three million," the doctor said."Three million isn't enough. My sister was a world mountaineering champion, so her kidney should be worth at least five million. And you need to help me forg

After Michelle finished speaking, she nodded to someone behind her.A massive projection screen on one side of the funeral home flickered to life, playing a video. The footage showed the interior of the rescue helicopter. In the clip, Emma leaned against the window, looking perfectly healthy. She looked down at me struggling through the snow and arrogantly stuck out her tongue, pulling a mocking face. The funeral home fell into stunned silence. All the mourners stared at the screen in disbelief. Then they glanced at Emma, who looked so fragile she could faint at any moment. The cheeky, triumphant expression on the screen stood in sharp contrast to her tear-streaked, pitiful appearance now."What… What's happening here?" someone asked."I thought she was rescued first because she felt dizzy? She looks completely fine in that footage," another said. The whispers spread quickly. Emma's face turned chalk white."No, that's not true!" she shrieked, rushing forward to shut off the

Leon muttered to himself, then frantically grabbed his phone and began calling every major hospital in Avondale."Hello, may I ask… did a patient named Sarah Lawson pass away at your hospital this afternoon?""Yes, sir. Ms. Lawson died at 3:15 pm from multiple organ failure due to late-stage cancer. We were unable to save her despite our efforts."After getting confirmation from the third hospital, Leon's phone slipped from his grasp and clattered to the floor. All the strength drained from his body, and he collapsed onto the carpet on his knees. At last, he accepted the truth—I was really gone.Mom watched his devastated state, worry flashing in her eyes, but instead of approaching him, she went straight to comfort Emma, who was crying in his arms. "Don't cry anymore, Emi. Sarah just couldn't stand seeing us happy."She spoke through gritted teeth, as if I had been her enemy rather than her daughter. She went on, "She fought with you over everything when she was alive, and now

I was dead. My spirit floated above the small lodge at the foot of the mountain, watching.Michelle held my cold body and cried her heart out. She had been the only warmth in my life, and now I could no longer comfort her. My consciousness drifted back to the home where I'd lived for 31 years. The house was brightly lit and full of cheerful voices and laughter. In the center of the living room stood a huge three-layer cake. Mom, Dad, Leon, and Daria gathered around Emma as they celebrated her 32nd birthday. Today should have been my birthday too. Instead, it had become the day I died."Why isn't Sarah back yet? She promised she would never miss my birthday," Emma said, nestling against Leon's shoulder and feigning concern.Mom smiled and gently touched her nose."She just loves being mysterious. Don't worry about her. Today is all about you, so make your wish."Dad looked at Emma adoringly. "That's right. We're not waiting for her anymore."Leon lit the candles slowly. "

Dad let out a sigh and said, "You see, even Daria knows who truly cares for her."Mom nodded in agreement."Now our family is finally whole again," she said.Yes, the five of them were a family. I watched their joyful reunion and quietly turned around. I opened the hospital room door and walked out.Behind me, I could hear their joyful laughter. I slowly closed the door, shutting that world away from me forever. On my last day alive, I didn't want them to see my miserable state. So I traveled to Avondale, the place where I'd made my first solo climb. I no longer had the strength to go up the mountain, so I found a small lodge at the base and checked in.In my final moments before losing consciousness, Michelle found me. She rushed me to the hospital for emergency treatment, her voice thick with tears. I never expected she would be the one to grieve for me at the end. With what little strength I had left, I looked at her and pointed toward the backpack beside my bed. After a mo
