I don’t remember driving home. The next thing I knew, I was standing in the middle of our dark, empty bedroom. The silence was louder than any noise. I could still smell the feast from the celebration, and underneath it, the faint, sweet scent of Lydia’s perfume that clung to Marcus’s clothes.
My body felt heavy, like it was made of stone. A deep, throbbing pain had settled behind my eyes and in the center of my chest. It was a physical hurt, so strong I could barely stand.
I walked to the bathroom and caught my reflection in the mirror.
The woman in the red dress looked hollow. Her eyes were empty, red-rimmed from crying. This dress, this color… It was all a lie. With shaking hands, I pulled it off, throwing it into the corner like it was on fire. I put on my own soft, worn sleep shirt, the one Marcus always said was too plain. It smelled like me. Or at least, the me I used to be.
I crawled into our cold bed alone. The space beside me felt vast and empty. I curled into a ball, hugging my knees to my chest, but the pain didn’t stop. It grew. A sharp, twisting ache in my belly joined the storm in my heart. My wolf was silent inside me, too wounded to even whimper.
It’s just the shock, I told myself. Just a broken heart.
But as the night turned to morning, the pain got worse. It was more than sadness. It was a sick, dizzy feeling. The room began to spin even though I was lying still. A cold sweat broke out on my skin, but I was burning up.
I needed water. I tried to sit up, but the world tipped sideways. The last thing I saw was the bedroom door, so far away, before everything went black.
---
I woke up to a soft sound, the beeping of a hospital machine, and the rustle of fabric.
I opened my eyes to a bright, white ceiling. The smell was clean and sharp... antiseptic.
Goddess, I am in the pack hospital.
I turned my head. An IV tube was taped to my hand. Sarah, our maid, was sitting in a chair nearby, her face pale with worry.
“Luna? You’re awake. Thank the Moon Goddess.”
“What… what happened?” My voice was a dry crackle.
“You fainted, Luna. At the house. You hit your head on the bedside table. Alpha Marcus… he was called. He had you brought here.”
He had you brought here. Not, he brought you here. The difference cut deep even in my foggy state.
Just then, the door opened, and Dr. Evans walked in. Her kind face was serious. She carried a clipboard.
“Elena, good, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”
“Weak and dizzy,” I whispered.
She nodded, checking my IV. “That’s to be expected. You’ve had quite a shock to your system. Physically and emotionally.” She paused, looking at me with a gentleness that made new tears prick my eyes. “Elena, when we did tests, we found something. Something important.”
Sarah squeezed my other hand. I looked from her face back to the doctor’s.
“What is it?”
Dr. Evans sat on the edge of the bed. “You’re pregnant, Elena. About six weeks along.”
The world stopped.
The beeping of the monitor seemed to fade away. Pregnant. A baby. Marcus’s baby. Our baby. Created in love, or what I thought was love, just weeks ago.
A storm of emotions crashed into me. A fierce, sudden joy, a tiny light in all this darkness. Then, immediate, crushing fear. He doesn’t want me. How can he want our child?
“A baby?” I breathed, my hand drifting to my stomach.
“A baby,” Dr. Evans confirmed softly. “You’re very early, and the stress and your fall… we need to keep you here for a day or two to make sure everything is alright. You need rest. For both of you.”
A new strength, fragile but real, sparked inside me. This changed everything. This was a part of us, a part of me. Maybe… maybe this would change his mind. The bond of a child was powerful. He couldn’t reject his own flesh and blood.
“I need to see Marcus,” I said, trying to sit up. “I need to tell him.”
Dr. Evans and Sarah exchanged a look I couldn’t read. “He was here earlier,” Dr. Evans said carefully. “But he left. He knows you’re stable.”
“I have to tell him about the baby,” I insisted, the urgency building. He needed to hear it from me. He would see that our story wasn’t over. It was just beginning.
Against the doctor’s advice, I made them help me out of bed. I was shaky, but the desperate need to find my husband pushed me forward. Sarah helped me into a robe and slippers, and I walked out of the hospital wing, through the quiet pack house corridors, toward our home.
Our home. The place where he had destroyed me yesterday.
The front door was unlocked. The house was silent. My heart pounded against my ribs as I climbed the stairs, each step a mountain. I would go to our room.
I would rest, and then I would call him. I would say the words: Marcus, we’re going to have a baby.
I pushed the bedroom door open. And my world shattered all over again as I saw my husband… and Lydia on our bed. Our matrimonial bed.
The white sheets were tangled around their bodies, carelessly thrown over them like they had fallen asleep from exhaustion. Lydia lay close against him, her head resting on his chest, her body pressed to his as if she belonged there.
Marcus didn’t move. He didn’t push her away.
A raw, guttural sound escaped my throat, not a scream, not a sob, just pure, animal pain.
Marcus stood at the hospital entrance, watching the glass doors swing open.He didn't move forward or take a step forward; he had learned that patience was what this would take. Elena stepped out of the hospital first, holding Kai's small hand in hers. The moment she straightened, her eyes landed on Marcus almost immediately, and the sheer caution in her eyes made Marcus flinch slightly. But Kai had already seen him too. The boy pulled his hand away from his mother and walked straight toward the tall Alpha."Kai!" Elena yelled, rushing after him.Kai stopped directly in front of Marcus, looking up at him with unreadable green eyes."What are you doing here?" Elena said, sounding slightly breathless as she stopped beside Marcus.Marcus didn't answer her immediately. He carefully reached into his car and pulled out a beautiful bouquet of fresh white roses."These are for you," he said softly, offering them to her.Elena stared at the flowers with narrowed eyes, as though they were somet
Kai stared up at his mother with a thoughtful expression on his face. "Why do I like mister Marcus?" He repeated. "Well, because he looks like the older me and he seems to remember things about you from when you weren't pregnant with me."Elena tilted her head at his response, "What do you mean by that, baby?""It means I hardly know anything about you. Everyone acts like something never happened before you got pregnant with me." Kai paused and stared down at his hand. "I don't like that."Before Elena could even start to comprehend or think of an answer, a light knock sounded at the door. She took a deep breath, then said, "It's open."The door was pushed open slowly, and Dominic stepped into the room. He had a neat brown sweater on, carrying a colorful gift bag in one hand and a soft dinosaur plushie in the other. "Elena, Kai, good morning." Dominic greeted with a warm smile as he stepped into the room. "How's our little boy doing today?"Kai's face lit up slightly, "Mr. Johnson."
Author's point of view. Marcus remained frozen beside the hospital bed, his plan resting beneath the tiny hands of his son. Kai's innocent words hung in the air, making Marcus feel horrible.'I can't believe he's defending her, Marcus thought, a sharp ache expanding in his chest. 'After everything that just happened to him, he's still trying to protect his mother.'Marcus looked down at the apple, bruised boy sitting under the thin white hospital sheets. Looking at Kai, made it seem like he was staring into some kind of mirror. He had rushed into the room ready to burn the world down, casting blame on the woman who had literally brought their son to life. Where was he when all that happened? He swallowed the bigger lump in his throat and wrapped his own hand around Kai's. "I'm sorry, Kai," Marcus said, his deep voice sounding unusually soft. "I shouldn't have yelled at your mom. I was just... I was really scared when I heard you were hurt."Kai looked at him closely then gave him
Elena point of view. Before I could open my mouth to respond, Marcus turned to face Dominic, who was standing by the corner with an emotionless look on his face. The tension in the room made it hard to breathe for a moment. "You should leave, I don't appreciate outsiders involving themselves in my business," Marcus said, adjusting the hem of his sleeves. "Now."Dominic didn't flinch, he held eye contact with Marcus for a few seconds more before looking at me and waiting for my signal. I let out a small sigh and gave him a small, almost reluctant nod. Honestly, I didn't want to remain here with Marcus. But with the look on his face, it seemed as though he wasn't here to play around. "I'll head home now, Elena. If you need anything you can call me." Dominic said softly. He crossed the room and stopped beside the bed, then he smiled down at Kai. "Get some rest, little guy."Kai gave him a small smile, Dominic turned and walked out of the room, allowing the heavy lock to click back in
Elena POVI couldn't even breathe the moment the woman smiled my way. Without thinking, I ran toward Kai and shoved the said woman back with all my might. "Get away from him!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside Kai. My heart raced against my chest as I brushed a few strands of hair out of Kai's face. He was curled tightly on his side, his hands clutched over his stomach as small tears rolled down his closed eyes. He was breathing in shallow, raspy gasps. "Kai, baby. It's mummy, look at me." I pleaded softly, trying to keep the anger and fear out of my voice so I wouldn't frighten him. I lifted his head and placed it on my thigh. "Where does it hurt? Tell me.""My side..." He whimpered, squeezing his eyes tighter. "It hurts, mummy."I shouldn't have allowed him to go to the bathroom by himself, I had been so engrossed in my discussion with Dominic. That I hadn't even noticed when he left. Seeing him in so much pain made the fear in my chest instantly turn to anger. The woman s
ElenaThe soft ping of my phone echoed through the quiet cottage as I finished working, I closed my laptop and leaned back against my seat. Two days had passed since my meeting with Dominic, and the border lockdown was being lifted in a day or two. My phone buzzed again, snapping me out of my thoughts. I picked up the phone and saw Dominic's name flashing across the screen. "Good evening, Miss Silverwood," Dominic's polite voice echoed over the speaker. "I hope I'm not disturbing your evening.""Not at all, Mr. Johnson," I replied, leaning against the kitchen counter. "Is this regarding the proposal?""It is," he said smoothly. "I was wondering if you might be open to discussing a few things over dinner tonight? There are a few operational clauses I'd like to clarify in person."I hesitated, my hand tightening around the phone. "I appreciate the gesture, Mr. Johnson, but I usually keep my evenings reserved for my son.""Of course," Dominic answered quickly, his tone warm and entirel
