Vance answered screaming, as promised.

“I told you not to come.”

“Glasses is at a rest stop,” I said. “She dumped a phone. It has your box and a service road pin. If you want me to hang up I will hang up after the pin.”

The screaming stopped. “Send the pin.”

Gio sent it.

Vance’s breath went ragged. “That road is a cutout we used five years ago for a different animal. If she knows it, someone sold a memory. I can divert. I cannot divert and lecture you. Stay off the cutout.”

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    Dirt

We put Carmine in the ground on a hill that did not face a crane. Ten people. No cameras we could see. The priest said sequence again and then shut up, which was the kindest thing anyone did all day. Bellomo stood far back. DeLuca stood closer. Gina cried into a handkerchief she had actually brought. Elena watched the trees. Vincent threw the first fist of dirt like it owed him money. I threw the second and my elbow hated me and I did not stop. When it was done, Bellomo approached as if flowers could grow from timing. “The clubs will ask if the seat holds in dirt as well as in a cardigan,” he said. “The seat holds,” Vincent said. “If they ask twice, send them to the stain on the yard floor. She washed it. They can wash their mouths.” Bellomo left without a tooth. DeLuca lingered. “Crews who do not miss will not come to a funeral. They will come to a window. If Reid cashed four, those four are already wages.” “I know,” I said. “I can ask Paolo for the wage names aga

Alvarez read the receipt twice and then looked at me as if I had offered her a cigarette in church. “No badge,” she said. “That is the whole joke. He wants a cafeteria still of the widow and the gun without a detective in the frame.” Vincent stood with his coat on and his hands empty on purpose. “Then you are not in the frame. You are in the kitchen. Cafeterias have kitchens.” “I am not a cook.” “You are a door,” I said. “He said leave the badge. He did not say leave the building.” Vance, on speaker, made a noise like a man swallowing a memo. “If you walk into an annex cafeteria at noon after a cutout and a painted floor I will have to explain you to a cardigan as tourists. Do not sit with him. Do not sign. Do not trade Teresa for a quiet yard. Quiet yards are how farms breathe.” “I am not trading a saint,” I said. “I am seeing whether a man who buys coffee in the open still thinks I will come alone.” Vincent’s eyes cut to me. “You will not.” “I know. That is why I

Queens at 4:55 was a closed metal gate and a dumpster and a woman in a puffer coat who smoked like it was a second job. Alvarez was with us because Vincent had called her from the stair and she had said, “If you go to that union without me I will charge you with optimism.” The night clerk looked at the badge, then at me, then at Vincent’s scar, and decided the badge was the least strange. She passed a folded card. No ceremony. “Third drawer. Not a box. A file drawer in the manager’s office that is labeled supplies. He showed the sling man a box that was already empty and then he opened supplies when he thought I was in the toilet. I was not in the toilet. I was tired.” Alvarez took the card with a glove. “Name on the file.” “Teresa, then a slash, then Baby,” the clerk said, and grimaced. “I do not like that. I do not want to know.” My throat closed. Baby was what my father called me when he was winning and what he forgot when he was not. Vincent did not touch me in fro

Stay off the cutout.” Vincent was already on the on ramp. “We are on the thruway. We are not on your memory. If the box turns, you say so.” It turned. Russo, tablet on his knees, said, “They took the cutout. Your clever steel is on her pin.” Vincent’s foot went down. I held the lawyer’s phone like it might bite. A message arrived on it while I held it. From a number labeled SIX. Do not follow the box onto gravel. Follow the wife if she leaves the asphalt. She always chooses a second building. I showed Vincent a

Russo zoomed. The hook was too proud again. The same ambition as the paper at my mother’s walk. Elena came down in a sweater, saw the screen, and went still. “That is for the crews,” she said. “Not for a judge. Men who cannot read a will can read a name on the ground.” Vincent’s voice was low. “How many cameras.” “Four,” Russo said. “Two drowned in the night by foam. Two lived. The paint man wore a hood. He had three minutes after inspectors rotated off the inner door. They used the rotation. They are learning our dull.” I stared at my letter on the concrete. It looked like a claim and a joke and a target. “I want it gone before a shift sees it,” I said. “If you scrub it you look scared,” DeLuca said from the doorway. He had slept in a chair and looked it. “If you leave it you look marked. If you paint over it with the house name you look like you are arguing with a floor.” Vincent rubbed his eyes. “We scrub. I am not asking men to walk over a forged wife to start a tr

Vance was already on his own phone. His mouth got thinner with each second. “Say it,” Vincent said. “The clinic moved him at eleven forty for a scan nobody ordered,” Vance said. “The escort is not answering. The clinic is answering too much. They have a gurney and no deputy.” Alvarez swore. “I am at a gate.” “Stay at the gate,” Vance said. “If you leave this yard tonight it becomes a hole with inspectors in it.” I set the landline down. “He split us with a can and a gurney. Same trick. New floor.” Vincent looked at the two men on the rim. “They talk first. Then I decide if I chase a scan.” The ice was gone from these two. They were south lot, not fish room. Younger. Paid less. One had already started naming a dispatcher to save a knee. Russo crouched. “Who walked the gurney.” The talker swallowed. “We do not walk gurneys. We walk fuel. The other page is Glasses. She likes buildings with badges. She said if the line held, use the clinic. She said the wife cannot be
