"I'm going to talk to him," Julianii said, already reaching for his jacket.

"No!" I put my hand on his arm before he could stand fully. "You're not."

"Sabine, he just told you……"

"I know what he told me!" My voice came out sharper than I intended, but I didn't soften it. "If you walk in there right now and confront him, you'll tell him exactly how much we've found. He already knows we're investigating. Don't hand him the rest of it."

Julianii stopped, his jaw tight, and I could see the argument

  • The Rival I Let In   What Her Grandmother Knew

I carried the letters upstairs in both arms, like something that might spill. It was nearly two in the morning, the house had that deep, dead quiet it only had at night, when even the clocks seemed to hold their breath. I walked the length of the east hallway, down the stairs, and along the corridor toward the study. The line of light was still there beneath the door.I stopped. For a moment I stood with the bundle pressed against my chest, listening. I heard the faint scrape of a chair, a page turning and a man breathing in a room he had not left in hours.I told myself I would wait until morning, that I needed to think. But thinking had never once protected me from the truth.I knocked. The sounds stopped."Come in," Julianii said.He was at the desk, still in yesterday's shirt, the sleeves rolled to his elbows. A lamp burned beside him with papers that lay across the blotter in loose heaps, and a cold cup of coffee stood at his elbow with a skin on it.He looked up, when he saw me,

  • The Rival I Let In   Let Him Look

I didn't sleep. I sat on the floor of my grandmother's dressing room until the light went out of the window, holding the photograph in both hands. Then I stood, switched off the lamp, and walked down the stairs with the picture pressed against my chest. The house was silent and a line of light showed beneath the study door at the far end of the hall, and I walked past it without slowing.I didn't want to see him.Not yet.I wanted to see “her.”The panel at the end of the east wing opened on the first press. My hand knew where to go now. Low on the left, in the groove of the carving. The wood sighed inward, and the cold, dry smell of old paper came out to meet me. I turned on the lamp Julianii had left on the desk and stood in the center of the little room. The monitors still stared down at me. The folders were still lined up on the shelves, some of them open where we had left them, their pages fanned across the wood like the feathers of something that had stopped flying."You knew,"

  • The Rival I Let In   The First Lie

I didn't speak to Julianii for the rest of that day.I didn't shout, and I didn't cry again. I went to my study and sat behind my desk and opened a report I had no intention of reading. I turned the pages at regular intervals, the way you turn them when you want the room to believe you're working. He kept his distance.I heard him once, near noon, pause outside the study door. I held very still. After a moment his footsteps moved on.That was all.I had asked him a question in the car, and he had answered it, and the answer had been the truth. That was the problem. If he had lied, I would have known what to do with it. I would have been angry, and clean, and finished. But he had told me the truth.“I thought being close to you would give me the answers I couldn't get anywhere else.”And then, with his voice shaking, he had told me a second truth.“I didn't know you would become the answer I couldn't live without.”I could not make the two sit together.Mireille came at four.I had sen

  • The Rival I Let In   The Man Vesper Feared

Mireille left in a taxi. She had a call to make and a stack of filings to cross check, and she squeezed my hand once on the pavement before she went. She didn't say anything about the look on my face, she just touched my arm and told me to eat something.Julianii was still in the car.He had been there for an hour. When I came down the steps, he got out and opened my door, and his eyes went over my face the way they always did now, quick and careful."Are you all right?""Drive," I said.He didn't ask again. We went home through the afternoon traffic without speaking to each other.I watched the city slide past the window. A woman pushed a pram, a boy chased a pigeon across a square. Everything looked ordinary, and I held the lawyer's last words in my head like a coal I couldn't put down.“After her death, there was one other person he feared.”“Julianii Marchetti.”Julianii turned through the gates of Castellane House and rolled up the drive. He stopped by the fountain and switched o

  • The Rival I Let In    The Lawyer Who Changed Sides

His office was above a tailor's shop on a quiet street, up a narrow staircase that smelled of wool and floor polish.Julianii drove us there. He parked at the curb and turned off the engine, and for a moment none of us spoke."I would rather go in without you," I said.He looked at me. Something moved across his face, quick and quiet, and then it was gone."All right.""It isn't………""You don't have to explain." He kept his hands on the wheel. "I'll be here."I stepped out and Mireille followed. I didn't look back at the car, but I felt it behind me all the way to the door, solid and patient. The lawyer was a thin man in his fifties with a tidy grey mustache and the careful stillness of someone who billed by the hour.He rose when we came in. He shook Mireille's hand, then mine, and gestured at two chairs facing a desk so neat it looked unused."Ms. Castellane," he said. "Ms. Laurent. I assumed you would call.""You assumed correctly," Mireille said."Then you understand I can't discus

  • The Rival I Let In   The Space Between Them

I slept in the blue room at the end of the hall upstairs. It was the room my grandmother kept for guests. The bed was too large and the sheets smelled faintly of lavender, and I lay on top of the covers in my clothes, staring at a ceiling I had memorized as a child.I didn't cry, not that I had expected to.I listened instead. For a long time the house was perfectly quiet. Then, somewhere after midnight, I heard footsteps on the stairs. They were slow and soft, and they stopped outside my door.My heart stopped with them.I waited for the knock. It didn't come. After a minute, the footsteps moved away. A door closed somewhere below. And I lay in the dark with my hand pressed flat against my chest, unsure whether I was relieved or something far worse.I woke up to gray light and the smell of coffee. For a moment I couldn't place it. Then I sat up and saw a thin line of steam rising from the floor outside my door, where the light came in through the gap beneath the frame.I crossed the
