Maya

The universe should really stop giving me surprises.

I don’t like surprises.

Good surprises make me suspicious.

Bad surprises usually come with paperwork.

And unfortunately, the envelope sitting in my campus mailbox looked very much like paperwork.

I stared at it for a second longer than necessary.

Large.

Official.

White.

The kind of envelope that never contains anything fun.

Nobody has ever opened one of those and discovered free money.

Or a puppy.

Or an all-expenses-paid vacation.

No.

  • The Rogue Next Door   Chapter 102

Maya“Why the hell are you dealing with this by yourself?”The question hangs between us.Simple.Direct.Completely unfair.Because I don’t actually have a good answer.I just stare at him across the parking lot.The attorney’s letter still clutched in his hand. The evening sun is starting to dip lower now, painting everything gold.People are coming and going from the restaurant behind us.Cars pull into the lot.Engines start.Doors slam.Life keeps moving.Meanwhile, I feel completely stuck.“I don’t know.”Cole immediately shakes his head.“That’s not true.”His voice isn’t angry. Not really.Frustrated maybe.Worried definitely. But not angry. And somehow that makes everything worse.Because if he was angry?I could defend myself.I could fight.I could explain.Instead he’s standing there looking at me like he wants to carry some of this weight for me.And I don’t know what to do with that.I laugh. One short, broken sound.“This is insane.”Cole’s eyes never leave mine.“Yeah.

  • The Rogue Next Door   Chapter 101

ColeSomething is wrong.I know it before I even see her. That’s probably the first sign that I’ve completely lost my mind over Maya Bennet.Three months ago, I couldn’t have told you what her favorite coffee was. Now?I can tell when she’s upset from a single text message.Apparently that’s who I am now.A guy who analyzes punctuation because he’s worried about his girlfriend.Pathetic.My phone sits on the table in front of me while Jake and Markus argue about something incredibly stupid involving fantasy football.I haven’t listened to a single word.Because Maya’s last text keeps replaying in my head.I’m okay. Just tired.Normally that wouldn’t mean anything.Except Maya never uses periods when she’s texting me.And she definitely doesn’t answer a question with four words.Something happened.I know it.The problem is she’s avoiding me.Not in an angry way.Not in a relationship-problem way.In a Maya way.The kind where she decides she’s carrying a problem alone because she does

Maya“I was hoping you’d never see that.”For a second, I honestly don’t know what to say.I just stand there in the middle of the sidewalk outside the economics building, gripping the letter so tightly the paper crinkles in my hand.Students stream around me in every direction.Someone is laughing nearby.A bike rolls past.A professor crosses the courtyard carrying a stack of books.Normal life keeps moving.Meanwhile, my entire world feels like it just slammed into a wall. The attorney’s letter trembles slightly between my fingers.Twenty-three thousand dollars. The number keeps replaying in my head.Over and over.Like my brain is trying to convince itself it must have read it wrong.Maybe there was an extra zero.Maybe I misunderstood.Maybe—No.The silence on the other end of the phone tells me everything I need to know.My father knows exactly what that letter says.Which means he knew before I did.“How long?” I ask quietly. The words come out calmer than I feel. That almost

MayaThe universe should really stop giving me surprises.I don’t like surprises.Good surprises make me suspicious.Bad surprises usually come with paperwork. And unfortunately, the envelope sitting in my campus mailbox looked very much like paperwork.I stared at it for a second longer than necessary.Large.Official.White.The kind of envelope that never contains anything fun.Nobody has ever opened one of those and discovered free money.Or a puppy.Or an all-expenses-paid vacation.No.Those envelopes contained taxes.Or bills.Or problems.Usually all three.I pulled it from the mailbox and frowned at the return address.A law office. My stomach immediately tightened. That couldn’t be good.I glanced around the nearly empty student center.Students moved in and out around me carrying coffees and backpacks.Laughing.Talking.Living completely normal lives.Meanwhile I was standing there feeling like the floor had suddenly tilted beneath my feet.Maybe it was nothing.Maybe it w

MayaI don’t open the letter at the game.I don’t open it when we win.I don’t open it when Bree nearly tackles me celebrating a touchdown. And I definitely don’t open it while Cole is grinning at me across a parking lot full of football players and screaming students.Because some part of me already knows. The second I click that attachment, something changes. And I’m not ready for that yet.So I wait.I make it through the rest of the game.I survive Jake trying to introduce himself for the seventh time even though we’ve met at least twenty.I survive Bree yelling at strangers.I survive Cole looking at me like I personally hung the moon after every big play.I survive all of it.But the email sits in the back of my mind the entire time.Waiting.By the time I get home, my stomach is in knots. The house is quieter than usual.Bree disappeared into her room after announcing she needed a shower and “an hour to emotionally recover from football.”Logan left for practice.Anthony is som

  • The Rogue Next Door   Chapter 98

MayaI never understood football. Not really.I understood the basics.Touchdown good.Quarterback important.People scream when something exciting happens. That was about the extent of my knowledge.Unfortunately, dating Cole Ryder has turned football into a mandatory part of my personality.Which is why I’m currently sitting in a packed stadium on a Saturday afternoon while Bree nearly ruptures a lung beside me.“LET’S GO!”I wince.“Oh my God.”Bree doesn’t even look at me.She’s already on her feet.Half the student section is standing with her.The band is playing. The crowd is screaming. And somewhere on the field, a referee just made a call that everyone apparently hates.Including Bree.“That was bullshit!”“Language,” I mutter. She points dramatically toward the field.“He was held!”I blink.“You know football?”“I know injustice.”Fair enough.A few seats down, Logan shakes his head.“I cannot believe I’m spending a Saturday watching football.”“You’re literally a college a

  • The Rogue Next Door   Chapter 14

Maya The next few days after the incident with Tessa were… strange. Before all of that happened, the football guys next door mostly just waved if they saw me outside. Now? Now it’s: “Hey Maya.” “How was your day, Maya?” “You doing okay, Maya?” It’s sweet. But also a little weird.

MayaI should probably stop staring. But it’s hard not to.Because Cole Ryder and Logan Hayes are standing in the same room. And neither of them looks like they’re leaving anytime soon. The hockey players are still arguing about the game in the living room. The football guys have made themselves co

Maya The hockey team winning tonight apparently means my house is now the unofficial after-party location. Which I definitely did not sign up for. Yet here we are. Ten hockey players currently occupy my living room, loudly arguing about the game while drinking beer like they just survived a war
