This time, Luther lowers his head in shame.

I can’t stop myself from cupping his cheek. The stubble on his jaw tickles my fingertips; it’s coarse but yet soft to touch.

“Luther, I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m just trying to explain how I feel. I wanted to reject you because I thought it would be easier for both of us if I did what you so obviously wouldn’t.”

I can hear the sincerity in Luther’s words, and it makes my heart sore with love. I bite my lower lip to hide the smile, trying to escape me.
