Cheryl’s POV

My heart was pounding like church bells as I eased the front gate open. Aiden was dead asleep when I slipped out—exhausted from climbing stairs and still breathing deeply—and I pressed a finger to my lips before quietly closing the door behind me. Every step felt like an act of sin and a liberation all at once. I carried only myself—no handbag, no phone, no promise left to keep. I figured I'll be back before he wakes up, Aiden could be a heavy sleeper most of the time and I hoped this night was one of those nights

The street glowed with soft lamplight as I walked toward the villa where Filippe’s invitation led me. The night air wrapped around me like silk, and I could smell sun-warmed stone and garden jasmine. Deep down, I felt alive again. I had forgotten what it felt like to choose—to step into the unknown.

The villa’s terrace burst into sight as I rounded the corner: lanterns strung overhead in trailing vines, tables set with alabaster pitchers of water, deep indigo-bl

Aiden's POVThe house was too quiet.Aiden knew that kind of silence. It wasn’t the soft, peaceful quiet that lulled him to sleep on normal nights beside Cheryl. No, this was the eerie, unnatural kind that pressed on your chest and made your gut twist before your mind caught up. His steps echoed a little too loud as he walked into the house, calling her name. She wasn't beside him when his eyes accidentally popped open and he wanted to reach for her to pull her into his arms the way he usually did when he craved her warmth. Maybe she had woken to get something to drink, she could've woken him up.“Cheryl?” he called again, louder now, eyes scanning the living room.Nothing.He moved through the rooms quickly—bedroom, bathroom, kitchen. The book she’d been reading earlier lay facedown on the patio chair, her tea untouched. Her phone, her shoes, and even her purse were still intact, nothing appeared to missing well except - her. The clock on the wall ticked away like a taunt.Aiden stil

Cheryl’s POV“I don’t understand,” I whispered, my fingers trembling against the satin napkin crumpled in my lap.Filippe’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes sharpened like knives drawn from velvet. “I know,” he said, almost kindly. “You weren’t supposed to—not until tonight. You don't know how glad I am, that you came here alone”He leaned back in his chair, folding one leg over the other, his fingers steepled against his lips in thought. Candles flickered across his high cheekbones, casting long shadows behind him. Around the room, the others had returned to their seats, murmuring in low tones, eating again as if nothing had happened. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that the real dinner had already begun—and I was on the plate.“I want to go home,” I said, standing slowly. “This was a mistake. I shouldn’t have come.”Filippe tilted his head, a slow, pitying smile curling his lips. “Ah, Cheryl. But you did come. And you stayed. You drank our welcome. You broke bread with us. Th

  • The Roomie Complex   147 - LIES

Chapter — Cheryl’s POVBy the time we got back from the market, the sun was beginning to climb steadily into the sky. Florence was warm that morning—warm and golden, like everything had been dipped in honey. Maria, the housekeeper, had insisted we make it back before Aiden returned, muttering “il capo non sarà felice” under her breath more than once. She was a fearful old lady, but she was agile and efficient and had seemed to make it her utmost duty to make the wellbeing of my baby her priority. Luckily, the gates were quiet when we walked in. No sign of Aiden.I kicked off my sandals at the door and took a much-needed shower. The market had been lively and exhilarating, but it had also left me covered in a fine layer of dust and the scent of sun-dried tomatoes. I stood under the hot spray until my fingers pruned, replaying the brief interaction with Filippe at the fish stand. His invitation echoed in my mind like a dare.I dressed in one of Aiden’s oversized white shirts, letting i

  • The Roomie Complex   146 - THE INVITE

CHERYL'S POVThe scent of crisp morning air drifted into the room before I was even fully awake. When I finally opened my eyes, the space beside me was cold, the sheets untouched. My fingers searched absently, but Aiden was gone. For a moment, panic fluttered through my chest—until I noticed the soft chime of a notification blinking on my phone screen.Didn’t want to wake you, bella. Went for a run. Be back soon. Look at this view.Attached was a picture—Aiden standing in front of a breathtaking Florentine sunrise, the rooftops of the city glowing gold behind him. He was in a simple white t-shirt, hair tousled, face flushed with exertion. My heart softened instantly.I smiled as I climbed out of bed, stretching my arms with a groan. The baby stirred, or maybe it was just the now-familiar growl in my stomach. Ever since I got pregnant, I’d been hungry every hour like clockwork. Famished didn’t even begin to describe it.Barefoot and still wrapped in the silk robe Aiden had insisted I s

  • The Roomie Complex   145 - HATING CORN DOGS

Aiden’s POVBy the time we got back to the penthouse, Cheryl was quieter than usual. Not sad—just... heavy. Her steps were slow, and her shoulders slumped ever so slightly under the weight of the evening.I knew the signs. She wouldn’t say a thing, but I saw it.I helped her out of the car, carrying all her things like I’d done all day—including the corn dog she hadn’t finished but insisted on bringing home like it was some kind of trophy. The elevator ride up was silent. Not awkward—just us breathing each other in, still simmering from the festival, the crowd, the fact that I’d nearly lost her for thirty minutes that had felt like an eternity. When we stepped into the penthouse, I placed her things on the couch as one of the housekeepers came to whisk them away, locked the door behind us, and turned to find her already peeling off her shoes with a groan.“My feet are dead,” she muttered but her hands were actually cradling her waist, I knew it was acting up again.“More like your bac
