Chapter 2

مؤلف: Maple
On the phone screen, Bianca and Carmine were raising glasses at the club.

The caption read: [Closed a huge deal with the Don. All this hard work, it was worth it.]

I couldn't help but laugh coldly.

Every proposal was signed off by me. She just drank with Carmine.

I shut off the phone and stared at the IV bottle by the bed.

Saline dripped at a constant rate, like someone's tears.

By the time the IV ran dry, Carmine arrived at the hospital.

But the first thing out of his mouth was a defense of Bianca.

"Bianca has to entertain clients with me. Don't make things awkward for her."

"Don't be so petty, like she's after your piece of the pie."

"You're pregnant. I had her take over for you so you could rest."

His breath reeked of alcohol. He glanced carelessly at the IV stand.

"Why are you in the hospital? You look fine to me."

"You kept saying Bianca blocks your requests. Didn't she approve this one pretty fast?"

I gripped the edge of the blanket.

The pain in my heart pressed down on my lips, kept me from speaking.

Disappointment wrapped around my heart like moss climbing the walls of an abandoned well.

Enzo's parting words echoed in my ears.

"If you decide to join us, there's a ship leaving Boston Harbor in nine days. It'll take you away."

Carmine sat for five minutes, then hurried off.

He said he and Bianca had to get to Palm Beach for another deal.

Watching his back as he left, I finally made up my mind.

I signed my name on the agreement. I was getting on that ship.

After I came home from the hospital, Carmine tossed me a supplementary credit card like he was doing me a favor.

"You don't have to submit requests to Bianca anymore. Just use my card."

"Just send me the transaction history afterward for review."

I stared at the card. Didn't take it.

Carmine let go. The card grazed my skirt and landed in front of my toes.

"Don't be difficult, Claire."

He leaned back in his chair, spinning his wedding ring slowly.

"Think about how many people I had to shut up to marry you. Have you forgotten?"

"Don't turn what I fought for back then into a joke."

I pulled my skirt up over my knees. I didn't bend down.

On the calendar by the window, the day after tomorrow was circled.

Nine in the morning.

The agreed departure time.

Carmine still didn't know. He thought I was just throwing a fit.

Seeing my silence, Carmine frowned and said in a low voice, "Did you hear me?"

I nodded calmly.

Not everything he said was a lie.

The Marchetti family came from Sicily. The old guard insisted the Donna had to be pure Sicilian too.

But my surname was Ashford. I was half English.

Carmine pushed back against all of them and walked me into the Old North Church.

In front of everyone, he said his Donna was his to choose.

That day, I gripped his hand tight, thinking I'd found someone to lean on for life.

I didn't know all of fate's gifts come with a price already marked.

After we married, I handled the books for the family. Enormous sums.

Carmine personally set the rule. Every cent I spent had to go through an approval process.

I could manage the books, but I couldn't spend a single cent of it.

He even kissed my forehead and said softly, "Claire, I'm protecting you."

There was some truth to it. Every elder in the family was watching every cent I handled.

Because I wasn't Sicilian.

But I never imagined I'd have to submit a request to take a taxi, buy clothes, buy medicine.

And every request went to Bianca Lombardi.

She was Sicilian. Now the family's consigliere.

And in the family's words, "one of us."

I believed Carmine loved me. I was willing to follow the rules he set.

Until I was backed into a corner.

Carmine bent down, picked up the credit card, and put it in my hand. His tone softened.

"From now on, send your requests straight to me. No need to go through Bianca. I'll approve them."

I pulled out the stack of documents I'd prepared.

The divorce agreement was tucked in the middle, the title clear as day.

But he only flipped to the signature line. The pen moved in one stroke.

After signing, he leaned down and kissed my cheek. Said he had to go audit the casino.

After he left, I pulled out the signed divorce agreement.

The circle on the calendar caught my eye.

Two more days.

This time, I was boarding a ship without him.

After the meeting ended, Vito took my hand and walked me back to the car.Two-and-a-half-year-old Luca was sitting quietly in the car, hugging his little bear, waiting for us.The car had just started moving when a dark figure suddenly lunged out and threw himself in front of it.The driver slammed the brakes. The screech of tires tore through the night. But it was too close. The man was struck by the hood and thrown hard onto the ground. The escort vehicles' doors flew open. Bodyguards poured out and pinned the man down.I rolled down the window. One look was all it took to recognize the face pressed into the ground.Carmine.Rain had started falling outside the window. His coat was soaked with mud. One side of his face was scraped raw. He was a wreck. The Don who'd once been spotless now looked like a stray dog with nowhere to go on a rainy night. But he was still straining to lift his head, screaming like a madman."Claire! Don't be afraid, I'm here! Come back with me, I'll protect

Three years later, my son could already run.Vito's devotion wore me down. I married him.I became the Donna of the Falcone family, still running the books.Today I was attending the East Coast Family Alliance meeting with Vito. The moment I stepped into the hall, I heard glass shatter.Carmine stood at the far end of the long table, a shattered glass at his feet.He stared at me, his lips moving several times."Cl... Claire?"I frowned slightly. So I'd run into him after all.Carmine shoved past the people in front of him, knocked over a chair, and charged toward me."It really is you! Claire!"Two bodyguards threw their arms out to block him.His fingertips grazed past my face, catching nothing but air.A few steps away, I caught the smell of alcohol on him.Three years apart, and he'd changed a lot. He'd clearly been drowning in liquor. His face was puffy and slack, like a sponge left soaking and never wrung out.His eyes were sunken deep, the pupils shrinking back as if afraid of t

Carmine's POVBianca snapped back to her senses and jerked her head up."Impossible. I reviewed the accounts myself. There's nothing wrong!"She scrambled to her feet, her skirt still dripping.Carmine's eyes flicked down to the stain, then he holstered the gun."You can't even hold onto books that were handed to you on a platter. You're useless."Bianca's lips went white."From now on, you're a secretary. You drink with clients. Be a decoration. At least that way you won't screw up again."Bianca spoke up, unwilling to let it go. "But I've always been the family consigliere—"Carmine backhanded her across the face. "Shut up! Open your mouth again, and next time it's a bullet."Bianca hunched her shoulders and didn't dare make another sound. The finance director clutched his files and stepped forward hesitantly."Don, what about the mining operation?"Carmine sneered and yanked his collar open."Is that the priority here? Hire a consulting firm. Pay them to fix it. Right now the only t

Carmine's POVA week had passed, and Carmine still had no word on Claire. His face grew darker by the day. Everyone in the mansion was afraid to even breathe too loud.Carmine holed up in his study, pouring whiskey down his throat, glass after glass.Even the sound of ice knocking against the rim felt like a knife in his ear.Like the whole world was laughing at him.Where could Claire have gone?Three years ago, the Ashford family was wiped out in a gang war. Claire's father's estate had long since crumbled to ruins. This place was Claire's only home.Carmine never imagined she'd walk away from this too.He called his lieutenant."Bring me every file that has anything to do with the Donna. I mean every single one."The files piled into a small mountain in his study. Carmine went through them one by one.The ledgers had no holes. Flawless.Next came the reimbursement requests that had been sent back.Carmine frowned. He hadn't expected this many.He picked one up at random. The first—t

After I got off the boat, Enzo arranged for me to stay at a Falcone family hotel. The key card was handed to me, and no one took my ID.Once the door closed, I stood leaning against it for a long time. The tension in my shoulders slowly unwound.I'd boarded that ship, crossed the sea, and left that old cage behind. But when my hand drifted to my belly, my brow still creased faintly. That hundred thousand dollars saved my baby. But what Vito would make me pay for it—I still didn't know.Three days later, a knock came at the door.I opened it to find Vito standing there. His black coat was draped over his arm. He took off his hat and bowed his head to me."Long time no see, Claire."That face was still strikingly handsome.Deep blue eyes. A straight nose. A jaw sharper than I remembered.Seven years apart, and fine lines had gathered at the corners of his eyes. But time hadn't carved age into his face. It had carved authority.Vito glanced past me into the room. "May I come in?"I steppe

Carmine's POVWhen they got back from Palm Beach, the car stopped, but Carmine didn't get out.He was still staring at his phone.Three days. Three days and he still couldn't reach Claire. And the supplementary card had no charges on it either.Carmine loosened his tie and dialed again. Voicemail."Claire's really something else."Bianca put away her compact mirror and sighed softly. "Pregnant and still no word. Making everyone worry like this."Carmine's gaze cut over, cold."Watch your mouth. You call her Donna."The words died on Bianca's lips. She gripped the edge of her purse and quickly lowered her eyes."Yes, Don."The car door pushed open.Carmine strode into the house, still dialing.Maybe Claire was just giving him the cold shoulder on purpose.Every time she'd been hurt before, she'd go quiet for a day or two.As long as he came back, pulled her into his arms, coaxed her a little—it would blow over. This time was just a bit longer.Carmine headed straight for the back room.
