Chapter 4

مؤلف: Maple
At seven in the morning, I zipped up my suitcase.

I'd just reached the door when a black Maybach pulled up in front of me.

The doors opened. Carmine and Bianca stepped out one after the other.

Carmine's face was cold and dark. Bianca trailed behind him, her eyes red-rimmed.

When she saw me, she deliberately shrank back behind his shoulder.

"Claire, everyone in the back room was there yesterday."

Carmine blocked my path, his tone edged with impatience.

"Just because I'm signing off on your requests now doesn't mean you get to humiliate Bianca in front of everyone."

I let go of the handle.

He hadn't even asked where I was going.

Bianca sniffled, her voice catching.

"I only asked her to fix a receipt."

"She tore it up in front of everyone. How am I supposed to keep the other family members in line after that?"

Carmine raised a hand, signaling her not to explain.

He sighed and looked down at me.

"I know you don't like Bianca. But she's only following my orders."

He paused. "Apologize to her, and we'll let this go."

I looked at him. Suddenly it all felt ridiculous.

"The money for my pregnancy was held up. My requests were rejected seven times. Was that your order too?"

Carmine froze. It was obvious he had no idea.

He turned to Bianca.

Bianca's lips trembled. She grabbed Carmine's arm.

"Those requests were missing documents. I reviewed them per your rules. Besides..."

Her voice rose. "She never resubmitted. I assumed she didn't need it anymore."

Carmine's brow twitched. He looked back at me.

"We were in a meeting that day. No one can sit there watching your requests around the clock."

I looked into his eyes and felt suddenly, bone-deep tired.

The first time we met was during Boston's first snowfall that year.

I had no winter coat, yet I felt warm—from the light in his eyes beneath those brows.

Now the snow that drifted through my memories had finally melted away.

I didn't want to argue anymore. I was exhausted.

Carmine's gaze dropped to my pregnant belly. He even smiled.

"Stop being upset. You and the baby are fine now, aren't you?"

I nodded.

The baby and I were fine. He just didn't know what it cost.

Carmine's brow eased a little. He reached out and pinched my cheek.

"Let's drop it. Bianca was out of line too. No apology needed."

Only then did he finally notice my suitcase. His eyebrow lifted.

"Going somewhere to clear your head?"

He reached out to straighten my collar.

I tilted my head away and pulled up my scarf.

His hand hovered, then dropped.

"Go on. Stay somewhere else for a few days. Flights, hotel—put it all on my card."

Carmine squinted, smiling. "Seven years. You've proven you're reliable. No more hassle with requests after this."

Only then did I realize—I'd endured this humiliation for seven years.

Seven years ago, when Carmine held my hand tight in the Old North Church, defying the whole world for me.

I thought he was the dawn.

I didn't know he was the sunset.

And the seven years after were all darkness.

Bianca tugged lightly at his sleeve. "Carmine, we still need to get to Palm Beach."

"I know."

He was still gazing at me tenderly. "You're headed to the airport? I'll drive you."

I let myself fall into those gentle eyes one last time.

"Carmine, I'm not going today to—"

"No time!" Bianca cut me off. "The other side is already waiting."

She turned to me, her voice soft and sweet.

"Claire, just call a car yourself."

"Besides, you don't need to request car fare now. So it's no trouble."

Carmine glanced at his watch.

"That works. Sweetheart, text me when you land. I need to get to this meeting."

He didn't wait for me to finish.

The two of them got back in the car. Bianca's hand stayed hooked through his arm the whole time.

I watched the car pull away.

Wind lifted the dead leaves off the ground, as if finishing the sentence I never got to say.

At eight forty, I arrived at Boston Harbor.

Enzo stood by the gangway and took my suitcase.

"This is a Falcone yacht. Carmine can't track you here."

I gripped the railing, one hand on my belly, and climbed the gangway slowly.

At nine sharp, the mooring lines were cast off.

A message from Carmine popped up on my phone.

"Have fun for a few days, then come back. The end-of-month accounts are waiting on you."

I turned off the screen, blocked Carmine, and walked to the deck.

The figures onshore grew smaller and smaller.

The truth is, life isn't what I lived. It's what I remember.

This time, I chose a life without Carmine.

I chose to leave for good.

The screech of tires tore through the night. But it was too close. The man was struck by the hood and thrown hard onto the ground. The escort vehicles' doors flew open. Bodyguards poured out and pinned the man down.I rolled down the window. One look was all it took to recognize the face pressed into the ground.Carmine.Rain had started falling outside the window. His coat was soaked with mud. One side of his face was scraped raw. He was a wreck. The Don who'd once been spotless now looked like a stray dog with nowhere to go on a rainy night. But he was still straining to lift his head, screaming like a madman."Claire! Three years later, my son could already run.Vito's devotion wore me down. I married him.I became the Donna of the Falcone family, still running the books.Today I was attending the East Coast Family Alliance meeting with Vito. The moment I stepped into the hall, I heard glass shatter.Carmine stood at the far end of the long table, a shattered glass at his feet.He stared at me, his lips moving several times."Cl... Claire?"I frowned slightly. So I'd run into him after all.Carmine shoved past the people in front of him, knocked over a chair, and charged toward me."It really is you! Claire!"Two bodyguards threw their arms out to block him.His fingertips grazed past my face, catching nothing but air.A few steps away, I caught the smell of alcohol on him.Three years apart, and he'd changed a lot. He'd clearly been drowning in liquor. His face was puffy and slack, like a sponge left soaking and never wrung out.His eyes were sunken deep, the pupils shrinking back as if afraid of t

Carmine's POVBianca snapped back to her senses and jerked her head up."Impossible. I reviewed the accounts myself. There's nothing wrong!"She scrambled to her feet, her skirt still dripping.Carmine's eyes flicked down to the stain, then he holstered the gun."You can't even hold onto books that were handed to you on a platter. You're useless."Bianca's lips went white."From now on, you're a secretary. You drink with clients. Be a decoration. At least that way you won't screw up again."Bianca spoke up, unwilling to let it go. "But I've always been the family consigliere—"Carmine backhanded her across the face. "Shut up! Open your mouth again, and next time it's a bullet."Bianca hunched her shoulders and didn't dare make another sound. The finance director clutched his files and stepped forward hesitantly."Don, what about the mining operation?"Carmine sneered and yanked his collar open."Is that the priority here? Hire a consulting firm. Pay them to fix it. Right now the only t

Carmine's POVA week had passed, and Carmine still had no word on Claire. His face grew darker by the day. After I got off the boat, Enzo arranged for me to stay at a Falcone family hotel. The key card was handed to me, and no one took my ID.Once the door closed, I stood leaning against it for a long time. The tension in my shoulders slowly unwound.I'd boarded that ship, crossed the sea, and left that old cage behind. But when my hand drifted to my belly, my brow still creased faintly. That hundred thousand dollars saved my baby. But what Vito would make me pay for it—I still didn't know.Three days later, a knock came at the door.I opened it to find Vito standing there. His black coat was draped over his arm. He took off his hat and bowed his head to me."Long time no see, Claire."That face was still strikingly handsome.Deep blue eyes. A straight nose. A jaw sharper than I remembered.Seven years apart, and fine lines had gathered at the corners of his eyes. But time hadn't carved age into his face. It had carved authority.Vito glanced past me into the room. "May I come in?"I steppe

Carmine's POVWhen they got back from Palm Beach, the car stopped, but Carmine didn't get out.He was still staring at his phone.Three days. Three days and he still couldn't reach Claire. And the supplementary card had no charges on it either.Carmine loosened his tie and dialed again. Voicemail."Claire's really something else."Bianca put away her compact mirror and sighed softly. "Pregnant and still no word. Making everyone worry like this."Carmine's gaze cut over, cold."Watch your mouth. You call her Donna."The words died on Bianca's lips. She gripped the edge of her purse and quickly lowered her eyes."Yes, Don."The car door pushed open.Carmine strode into the house, still dialing.Maybe Claire was just giving him the cold shoulder on purpose.Every time she'd been hurt before, she'd go quiet for a day or two.As long as he came back, pulled her into his arms, coaxed her a little—it would blow over. This time was just a bit longer.Carmine headed straight for the back room.
