Chapter 1

A Different Kind of Silence

The ballroom of the Grand Aurora Hotel looked breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, filling the ballroom with warm golden light. Fresh white lilies decorated every table, and the soft sound of violins drifted through the room as guests arrived in elegant gowns and perfectly tailored suits. Waiters moved gracefully from one group to another with trays of champagne and fruit juice while photographers waited near the entrance, hoping to capture the city's most influential faces.

Tonight was the Ashford Children's Literacy Foundation's Annual Charity Gala, an event held every spring to raise funds for libraries in underserved communities across Ashford City.

Standing behind the registration desk, Isabella Moretti took in the beautiful sight before her. She had volunteered at several charity events, but this remained her favourite. There was something heartwarming about seeing people gather for a cause that would help children discover the joy of reading.

"This place gets more beautiful every year," she said as she carefully placed another name card in alphabetical order.

Beside her, Sophia Carter looked up from the guest list and smiled. "It also gets more expensive every year. One dinner plate here probably costs more than my monthly grocery bill."

Isabella laughed. "You say that every time."

"Because it's true."

Before either of them could say another word, a middle-aged couple approached the registration desk.

"Good evening," Isabella greeted them with her usual warm smile. "Welcome to the Ashford Children's Literacy Foundation's Annual Charity Gala."

She quickly found their names, handed them their table cards, and pointed toward the ballroom. "Table Eight is by the stage. I hope you enjoy the evening."

"Thank you, dear," the woman replied kindly before following her husband into the ballroom.

Sophia waited until they were out of earshot before nudging Isabella with her elbow. "I've been watching you all evening."

"That sounds slightly creepy," Isabella replied.

"It probably is," Sophia admitted with a grin. "But you've smiled at every guest who has walked through those doors. I don't know how you do it."

"Do what?"

"Be nice to everyone."

Isabella looked genuinely confused. "Isn't that normal?"

"No, Bella." Sophia shook her head with a laugh. "That's just you."

Another guest stepped forward, bringing their conversation to a pause. Isabella welcomed him with the same warm smile, checked his name on the guest list, handed him his table card, and wished him an enjoyable evening. Whether someone donated a million dollars or simply attended to show support, she believed everyone deserved the same kindness. It was one of the reasons the foundation loved having her as a volunteer.

As the line grew shorter, Isabella reached for the bottle of water Sophia had left beside her.

"You haven't stopped moving since we got here," Sophia observed.

"I'm fine."

"You've been saying that for the past two hours."

"I really am."

Sophia folded her arms, clearly unconvinced. "One day, you're going to wear yourself out trying to help everybody. Five minutes ago you helped a florist carry flowers. Before that, you helped one of the waiters find the storage room. Then you carried those auction catalogues for a volunteer who was perfectly capable of carrying them himself."

"He asked where he should drop them."

"He didn't ask you to carry them."

Isabella smiled as she loosened the cap on the bottle. "It got there faster."

"I rest my case."

Just then, a young volunteer hurried toward them, slightly out of breath.

"Excuse me," he said, looking at Isabella. "Do you know where Mrs. Henderson is? She's supposed to inspect the silent auction display."

"I saw her near the west entrance a few minutes ago."

"Thank you." The young man hurried away without another word.

Once the volunteer was gone, Sophia turned back to Isabella. "See? Whenever someone needs help, they come straight to you. They just assume you'll have the answer."

"I happened to know where she was."

"You always happen to know." A mischievous smile spread across Sophia's face. "You know, if you spent half as much energy meeting people as you do helping them, you would've been married by now."

Isabella let out an exaggerated sigh and covered her face for a moment. "There it is."

Sophia blinked innocently. "What?"

"The marriage lecture." Isabella lowered her hand and smiled. "You've been 'just saying' since university."

"And I'll keep saying it," Sophia replied unapologetically. She leaned against the registration desk before asking, "You don't think about dating?"

"I think about it," Isabella admitted.

"But?"

"But I don't want to force it." She glanced around the ballroom before continuing. "I'd rather wait for the right person than rush into the wrong relationship."

Sophia sighed.

"I really don't understand you. You meet people, you like them. But somehow every man ends up becoming just your friend."

Isabella laughed softly and shook her head. "It just... happens."

"No it doesn’t," Sophia replied, pointing a finger at her. "You just don't give any of them a chance, and that's exactly why you're still single."

Isabella smiled. "You make me sound like a hopeless case."

"I never said hopeless." Sophia's expression softened. "You make it so easy for everyone to become your friend."

Isabella avoided Sophia's gaze and began straightening the stack of place cards that didn't need straightening.

"You don't have to get embarrassed," Sophia teased.

"I'm not embarrassed."

"You are."

"I'm organizing the place cards."

Sophia looked down at the perfectly aligned cards before raising an eyebrow. "They're already organized."

"I know," Isabella replied.

"So what are you doing?"

Isabella smiled sheepishly. "...Reorganizing."

Sophia burst into laughter. "I give up."

Their laughter blended naturally with the soft music drifting through the ballroom. Around them, conversations filled the air as more guests arrived. Some stopped to greet old friends, while others admired the elegant decorations before making their way to their tables.

The evening continued exactly as Isabella expected: warm, peaceful, and filled with the kind of purpose she loved.

Then, the atmosphere shifted. It wasn't loud. If anything, it was the silence that caught her attention. The conversations around the ballroom gradually faded. Several guests turned toward the main entrance at almost the same time. Near the glass doors, photographers who had been chatting only moments earlier quickly lifted their cameras. Even one of the waiters stopped walking before quietly stepping aside.

Isabella frowned and followed their gaze.

Three black luxury cars had just pulled up outside the Grand Aurora Hotel.

She turned to Sophia.

"Why is everyone reacting like this? Is someone important arriving?"

Sophia's smile faded. "You could say that."

"What do you mean?"

Instead of answering, Sophia nodded toward the entrance. "Just watch."

The first car came to a stop, followed by the other two. Uniformed hotel staff hurried forward to open the doors while a few security officers quietly took their positions.

A tall man stepped out of the second car. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit with a crisp white shirt and a dark tie. His neatly styled hair and calm expression made him look more like a businessman attending another meeting than the centre of everyone's attention. Yet every eye in the ballroom followed him.

The photographers immediately began taking pictures, their camera flashes reflecting against the hotel's glass entrance as he walked inside with slow, unhurried steps.

Quiet murmurs spread through the ballroom as guests turned to watch him. Some exchanged surprised glances while others leaned toward one another, speaking in hushed voices.

He didn't acknowledge the attention, nor did he react to the cameras.

He greeted a member of the organising committee with a polite handshake before making his way farther into the ballroom.

"That's Ethan Sinclair," Sophia said quietly.

Isabella nodded. "I know."

"Then you don't know why everyone's reacting like this?"

Isabella frowned. "Should I?"

Sophia studied her for a moment.

"You've really never paid attention to the stories about him, have you?"

Isabella shook her head. "What stories?"

Sophia hesitated.

Before she could answer, the microphone crackled to life.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced, "welcome to the Ashford Children's Literacy Foundation's Annual Charity Gala. We sincerely appreciate your presence this evening. We will begin in just a few minutes. Kindly proceed to your assigned tables."

Guests immediately began moving toward their seats.

Sophia glanced toward the stage before looking back at Isabella. "I'll tell you later."

Before Isabella could ask another question, another couple approached the registration desk.

She immediately put on her professional smile. "Good evening. Welcome to the Ashford Children's Literacy Foundation's Annual Charity Gala."

As she searched for their names and handed them their table cards, her mind kept wandering back to Ethan. She didn't know why everyone had fallen silent when he arrived. She didn't know why people whispered about him.

All she knew was that Ethan Sinclair had become the most interesting person in the room.
