~CIARA~

No. No. No.

My fingers trembled around the contract as my eyes scanned it again.

Graham Hayes.

The same Alpha from earlier.

The same man whose touch still burned against my skin.

I’d heard rumors about his ruthlessness. Cruelty. Unhinged personality. He didn’t seem like the polite man that had steadied me on the road. “I can’t marry him,” I voiced out my thoughts. “I…can’t get married to a man who just wants me to produce pups for him.”

My stepmother’s mocking laugh made my stomach drop through the floor. I knew that laugh. It was the one that came before she said something hurtful. “Why else would he marry someone like you?” Her voice bit into my skin. My eyes burned and my vision started to blur. “You should be grateful. An omega like you being Alpha Graham’s breeder is practically charity.”

My heart sank. “Mom!”

“What?” She snapped back. “Stop acting like you don’t like the idea of warming Alpha Graham’s bed and check out the damn wedding gown. It needs to be perfect for tomorrow.”

I blinked back my tears to keep them from falling. From my peripheral vision, Stephanie was giggling, saying something about how pathetic I am, and I just ignored her for my own sanity. I paused when I picked up the dress. “This…it belongs to my mother, why did you have to make adjustments on her dress?”

“She’s dead, right?” Stephanie smirked. “The living has to make use of what’s left.”

“My daughter is right.” My stepmother eyed the dress. “The dead’s dead, nothing can go to waste.”

My voice broke. “But you could have left it the way it was.”

“Your waist needs to be snatched!” She yelled. “Alpha Graham needs to sway the minute he sets his eyes on you. Check it out and let me see if it needs any other adjustments. Hurry.”

Sometimes, I wanted to yell back at my stepmother and tell her I was done with all her games. Tell her I was sick and tired of being her puppet. Tell her I didn’t want to be a side piece anymore—but my father’s cruel hits and the several scars on my body made me rethink my words. My stepmother’s words were like law in this house. If I go against her words, I’d get starved, beaten, and might eventually end up sleeping out in the cold.

I don’t  think I can handle that right now.

So I just dragged my legs up the stairs to wear the dress. After all, the wedding was tomorrow. I just wanted to get it over with.

~~~
After staying up all night to prepare my mind for the marriage, I didn’t think I’d wake up nervous. I stared at my reflection in the mirror and all I could see was a young woman being forced into a life she didn’t want.
My mother would have never allowed this.
The moon goddess shouldn’t have taken her.
“I’m applying the final touch of your makeup.” Giselle, one of my father’s maids, smiled down at me. “God, you’re such a pretty bride.”
“Giselle, don’t.” I whispered. “Don’t try to make this feel right.”
Her eyes softened. “I know it isn’t. I’m sorry you’re being forced to get married to—” She shuddered. She couldn’t even bring herself to call his name. That was how much fear he instilled in people. “I’m sure it can’t be that bad.”
“I’m getting married to a monster.” Tears prickled the corner of my eyes and Giselle panicked.
“You…you can’t cry, you’ll ruin everything and Janet’s going to make sure you’re punished.”
“Honestly, I don’t care anymore.”
“Ciara—” She came to sit next to me and took my hand. “I know this is hard, but look on the bright side. You don’t have to see Janet and Stephanie anymore. Your father can’t beat you up just as he likes.”
The thought of that was exciting, but I didn’t like giving myself false hope. “You don’t know if Alpha Graham is going to encourage their cruel acts.”
She shook her head. “If there’s one thing I know about that Alpha, it’s the fact that he always protects whatever belongs to him. And after the wedding, you are his.”
I closed my eyes and inhaled a sharp breath. I really hoped Giselle was right.
“Hi, sweet sis.” Stephanie’s high-pitched voice made my stomach drop through the floor. “It’s time!”
My heart pounded violently as I forced myself to stand. This was it. The moment I’d been dreading. I took one step after another, moving past Stephanie like she was literally invisible.
By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, my father gave me a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He took my hand in his. “Ready, child?”
My skin prickled with unease when he tightened his grip on my hand to the point of pain. “Yes. Yes, I’m ready.”
When we stepped into the wedding hall, everyone’s eyes were on me.
“Smile.” My father’s stern voice reached my ears. “And keep your legs moving.”
I forced a smile onto my face despite how terrible I felt, counting my steps toward the altar, but again, my clumsiness got the best of me. I tripped, nearly falling on my face, and the same firm grip steadied me.
The most beautiful blue eyes roamed my face.  “We meet again, Miss Norman.”
I gulped. “Al…Alpha Graham.”
His fingers tightened around me. “Soon,” he murmured, his voice low enough for only me to hear, “you’ll be calling me husband.”
    CIARAThe rain had stopped, leaving the stone courtyard cold. I sat alone on the cracked edge of the stone fountain where Hayes had slammed Gabriel hours earlier. My high-necked wool dress was still heavy and damp around my ankles, but I didn't care enough to go upstairs and change. Hayes was inside with the twins and I didn’t want to run into him. "Sitting in a puddle crying over two idiot males is not going to win you a war, Luna."I jumped, my hand dropping to the small iron dagger tucked inside my belt.Standing near the wooden stable archway was a tall female wrapped in a thick coat of white wolf fur and boiled black leather. She had sharp, icy blue eyes, pale scarred skin, and two heavy steel broadswords strapped across her back. She didn't walk like a noble lady—she moved like a veteran enforcer who lived on horseback.It was Lady Vanya, the female Alpha of the Frost-Peak clan from the northern tundra."I am not crying," I said, wiping the cold moisture off my cheeks with th
    CIARAThe Hall was choked with the smell of food as fifteen other pack leaders sat across the table.Hayes sat at the head of the long table, his broad shoulders stiff, his large hand clamped so tightly around his iron goblet that the metal bent under his grip. I sat to his right in my Luna chair, wearing a simple high-necked gown of dark wool that completely covered the fresh red bite marks on my throat from last night.Directly across from us sat Lord Gabriel.He had returned under his white truce banner for the evening feast, looking entirely unfazed by the storm outside. His silver hair fell neatly over his dark leather coat, his cold grey eyes constantly drifting over the high collar of my dress with an amused, knowing smirk."The trade routes through the southern pass are secure for the winter, Alpha Hayes," Lord Thomas, an elder from the eastern valley, said as he cut a thick piece of meat on his wooden plate. "If we pool our enforcers at the river, we can hold the lower road a
    CIARAEver since Gabriel pressed his mouth to my wrist in the Great Hall, my mark had been throbbing with a sick, feverish heat. Hayes had spent the entire afternoon pacing the floorboards of our quarters, his heavy boots thudding back and forth while he barked orders down to the courtyard. Every time he looked at my skin, his eyes turned dark gold, but he was too angry to come near me.By midnight, the heat under my skin felt like needles. I was sitting at the wooden table in my thin linen shift, trying to cool my collarbone with a wet cloth, when the side door to the balcony creaked open.I stood up instantly, my hand going to the iron dagger on the table. "Who is there?"Nobody answered. The wind blew through the crack, carrying a small, square wooden box wrapped in dark velvet. It sat right on the stone threshold of the balcony door.I walked over slowly, picked up the box, and brought it to the candlelight. Inside lay a dress made of crushed silver silk. The fabric felt like cold
    CIARAThe wooden door of our quarters rattled twice. Killian didn't wait for us to answer before pushing it open. He stood in the doorway, his eyes darting from the torn blue silk on the floor to Hayes and me lying tangled on the dark bear furs."Get up, Hayes," Killian said, his voice flat and tight. "We have a problem at the eastern river boundary."Hayes didn't move for three seconds. He kept his large arm wrapped around my waist, his thumb running over my hip. "I told you to clear the yard, Killian. I am not taking council meetings today.""It is not an elder," Killian said, taking a step into the room and closing the door behind him. "It is Lord Gabriel. He just crossed the river with ten of his elite enforcers. He is flying a white truce banner, but he brought four wagons of gold and rare silks."My stomach dropped. I sat up on the furs, pulling the thick wool blanket over my chest. "Lord Gabriel? The rogue Alpha from the southern ridge?""The same one," Killian said, looking st
    CIARA"You have two options, Alpha," Valen said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet yard. "Hand over the twins peacefully, or watch the Capital march ten thousand men up this pass. You have until dusk to sign the transfer."Hayes didn't say a word. He stood on the bottom stone step, his broad shoulders locked tight, his right hand resting on the iron pommel of his broadsword."Hayes," I whispered, stepping off the plank into the cold dirt beside him. "Look at the guards."The two knights riding behind Valen were already resting their hands on their hilts. They weren't here to negotiate. They were here to measure our walls.Valen unrolled the parchment, the dark red wax breaking with a crisp snap. "By royal decree, the Luna Ciara and her pups belong to the Crown. If you resist, you will be executed for treason, and the children will be taken by force anyway.""They're two days old," I said, my voice shaking with raw heat. "You think I'm letting you take my babies?"Valen final
    CIARAThe cool mountain breeze blew off the high peaks, carrying the fresh scent of summer pine across the wide stone balcony.Down in the green courtyard below, the twins were still fast asleep in the warm shade of the giant oak trees. Martha sat nearby on a low bench, keeping her sharp eyes fixed on the double cradle while three heavy guards stood watch near the inner stone archway.I leaned my back against the carved railing, resting my elbows on the cool stone. My legs still felt slightly warm and loose from our long run through the high meadows earlier that afternoon.Hayes stepped up behind me. He didn't say a word as he wrapped his broad, heavy arms tightly around my waist, pulling my back flush against his bare chest. His skin burned hot against my light dress, and he buried his face into the side of my neck, inhaling deep and slow right over our fated mark."You are thinking too much," Hayes murmured into my skin, his low voice vibrating through my spine."I am not," I said,
    ~CIARA~Tomorrow was the day my life would end. And the text on my screen did a great job reminding of it. “Miss, your coffee’s getting cold.”My head snapped up to meet a brunette’s warm gaze. She pushed the cup forward until it touched my palm. “You’ve been standing here for several minutes. Ar
