Chapter 2

He watched me for a few seconds, then suddenly shifted in his seat as though he was about to stand up. Before he could do anything, however, his phone rang.

He answered the call.

From where I sat, I couldn't make out his conversation. I could only hear his low, composed voice and a few brief sentences that sounded firm and authoritative.

He spoke for approximately ten minutes.

Meanwhile, I forced myself to focus on my laptop. I opened several job-search websites, entered the relevant keywords, and began submitting applications.

I didn't have time to admire a handsome stranger, no matter how ridiculously attractive he was.

I needed a job.

And I needed one fast.

My fingers were busy typing when a shadow suddenly fell across my table.

I frowned and looked up.

And nearly dropped my coffee cup.

The handsome man from the window was standing right in front of me.

Good heavens. He was even more attractive up close.

"Miss, would you mind if I talked to you for a moment?" he asked.

I stared at him, my lips slightly parted.

My brain had apparently decided to stop functioning.

He's talking to me? Why? Did I do something? Did he catch me staring at him?

"Y-yes. Of course," I finally replied, sounding far more nervous than I'd intended.

He gave me a faint smile, pulled out the chair opposite me, and sat down without further hesitation.

He moved with such effortless confidence, as though he'd already decided I wouldn't turn him away.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Victor."

He extended his hand.

I quickly accepted it.

"I'm Sevra. It's nice to meet you."

His palm was warm, his grip firm. But what caught my attention most was the way he looked at me.

His gaze was intense, as though he were trying to remember something buried deep in his mind.

"Sevra," he repeated softly, as if savoring the sound of my name.

I raised an eyebrow.

"Yes?"

He leaned back slightly without breaking eye contact.

"Miss, have we met before?"

I blinked in confusion.

"What? Met before? When?"

A low chuckle escaped his lips. That was when I noticed the dimples appearing on both sides of his face.

Good heavens. Even his dimples are unfair.

I immediately scolded myself.

Focus, Sevra. Focus!

"You helped me find something at JFK Airport last month," he explained.

I frowned, trying to remember.

"JFK Airport?"

"That's right."

He smiled faintly.

"You found my lost passport and handed it in at the information desk. Do you remember now?"

Suddenly, my memory took me back to an incident a month earlier, shortly after I'd moved to New York.

That day, I had been at JFK Airport taking care of my arrival documents when I spotted a passport lying unattended near the document-processing area.

I picked it up and checked the identification page to find out who it belonged to.

Victor Haulette.

The photograph showed a young man with sharp features, dark hair, and an athletic build.

Well, he's handsome. If only he were thirty-five, I might actually go after him, I'd joked to myself at the time.

I shook my head slightly, amused by how ridiculous that thought had been.

I was thirty-five and still single. But that didn't mean I should chase after every handsome man who crossed my path.

When I took the passport to the information desk, I noticed a tall man waiting there. He was wearing a black turtleneck and a face mask.

As I approached him, he turned his head.

For a moment, he seemed completely transfixed by my appearance.

As though he'd just seen something impossible.

She looks exactly like the woman in that painting.

Of course, I hadn't heard his thoughts. All I remembered was the strange way he'd stared at me, leaving me slightly confused.

"Excuse me. Is this your passport?" I asked, holding it out to him.

The man snapped out of his daze.

"Thank you very much, Miss." He accepted the passport. "I'm sorry I'm wearing a mask. I have a bit of a cold."

"Oh, that's all right. You'd better check it first, just in case I've picked up the wrong one."

He immediately opened his passport and examined the identification page.

"Yes, it's mine. Thank you again."

"You're welcome. I'd better get going now. Make sure you don't lose it again," I said with a small smile.

He laughed and gave me a thumbs-up.

"Take care," he replied.

With that, I hurried away because my best friend, Emily, had arrived to pick me up.

Behind me, Victor Haulette watched me leave, his gaze following my every step until I disappeared from sight.

Damn it. Why didn't I ask for her number?

He slipped his passport into his pocket, frustration flickering across his face.

Never mind. I'll ask Braddy to find out who she is.

After dinner, Victor insisted on driving me home.I eventually gave in, on one condition: he had to drop me off at the entrance of the alley near the convenience store.“Are you sure you want to get off here, Miss?” Danny, Victor’s personal driver, asked as he pulled over.“Yes, this is fine.”“I’ll walk you inside,” Victor offered.I gave him a questioning look. “There’s no need. My house is just around the corner.”“How close?”Suppressing a sigh, I pointed toward an orange-painted flat nestled inside the alley. Bougainvillea flowers spilled across its front, adding a splash of color to the modest little flat.“There. You can see it from here.”Victor glanced at the house before finally relenting.“All right. Be careful, Sevra, and get some rest.”“Thank you, Victor. For everything today.” I smiled sincerely before turning to Danny. “Good night.”“Good night, Miss.”With a final wave, I headed toward the alley, relieved to have escaped an unnecessary escort to my front door.I had n

Thankfully, Victor was still occupied with a phone call in the adjoining room, so I could answer without worrying about interrupting him.The moment I saw Anthony's name on my screen, my heart practically leaped. Finally!Ever since I'd moved to New York, Anthony had made one rule crystal clear: I wasn't allowed to contact him first. Not even once.It wasn't because we'd grown apart. We were simply being careful. With our shared past in the weapons business, we couldn't afford to let anyone discover how closely we were connected. Until we were certain our communications were safe, silence was our best protection.Still, that didn't make waiting for his calls any easier.Anthony wasn't just my cousin. He was one of the few people I could trust with my life. We had always been on the same wavelength, often understanding each other with barely a word exchanged. Perhaps it was in our blood. We shared the same sharp instincts, the same calculating minds, and an unfortunate tendency to get

At four o'clock that afternoon, I accompanied Victor to the boardroom.Several directors were already seated around the conference table, their expressions serious as they reviewed the documents before them.I took my place and waited for Victor to introduce the matter.Once the discussion began, he asked me to present my findings. For a moment, I felt the pressure of having everyone's attention on me.Then I took a breath and began.I explained each problematic clause in detail, showing the directors where the contract failed to align with the supporting documents and how certain provisions could potentially expose the company to significant risks.I made sure to explain my reasoning clearly, supporting every point with the relevant paperwork. As I continued, the directors listened attentively. Some exchanged glances. Others leaned forward to examine the documents more closely.By the time I finished, their reactions suggested they were satisfied with my explanation.Victor wasted no

I approached Victor cautiously. He was so engrossed in his work that he didn't seem to notice me standing nearby. My gaze briefly fell to his wristwatch.Oops. A Patek Philippe. For a man like him, perhaps that was pocket change.I stepped closer to his desk and waited quietly, hoping he'd eventually notice me.He finally looked up."Come here. Stand beside me."His tone was flat, almost as if he were giving an ordinary instruction.I followed his directions and moved to the side of his desk. He turned his laptop toward me, then handed me a stack of documents that looked as though someone had thrown them together in a hurry."I want you to review this contract. Check for typos, incorrect information, and any discrepancies between the contract and these supporting documents.""All right."I accepted the papers and skimmed through them before carrying everything to a small desk in the corner of the room.

I had to admit, the whole situation was incredibly awkward.Victor sat directly across from me. He wasn't just some handsome man having lunch with me. He was my boss. And not just any boss, either. He was the CEO of one of the most powerful companies I'd ever encountered.I watched as he placed a piece of beef on his own plate. Before taking a bite, he looked up at me."So, how's your first day? Do you think you'll like it here?""So far, so good," I replied honestly. "I like it."A faint look of satisfaction crossed his face.He seemed pleased with my answer before returning his attention to his food.We ate quietly for a while. Then, just as I was beginning to relax, he spoke again."After lunch, you'll help me draft some letters. We'll work on them here in my office."I nearly choked on my food.Wait. What?I stared at him, wondering if I'd heard him correctly."Um, shouldn'

From the cafeteria, Michael took me to the thirty-fifth floor, where Haulette's security division was based. It was also one of the facilities where the company's bodyguards received their training.Until then, I'd known Haulette mainly for its real estate business and shopping malls. I hadn't realized the company also provided professional security services.Apparently, they supplied security personnel for offices and bodyguards for celebrities and well-known politicians.Michael explained that Haulette had numerous contracts with prominent public figures, providing highly trained bodyguards to protect them.I listened with growing interest."So, do the bodyguards do all their training here?" I asked."Not exactly. They start with physical training at one of our camps in another city. Once they pass that stage, they come here to learn about security strategies and situational awareness."He paused before adding, "Being a bodyguard isn't just about being physically strong. They need to
