ERYN

Torren had offered to take Niko to school today. He finally did a little of what a father’s meant to do.

Niko was so happy, excited even. It was the first time his dad took him to school. Even though Torren had declined his invitation to Parent’s Day, Niko was still over the moon.

On getting to the school, as Torren was moving into the parking lot, I saw Saela.

She was with a child, a boy. And she was clearly waiting for someone the way she was staring around.

I didn't know she had a child and he was also about the similar age as Niko if I'm not mistaken.

And if he was Torren’s too… shouldn’t I have known?

I quickly got down and helped Niko out of the car. Torren stepped out too.

“Dad!” a boy’s voice called, and Torren's face swerved in his direction.

The boy ran straight into Torren’s arms.

“We’ve been waiting for you,” he said softly.

I watched Niko’s face pale as Torren lifted the boy naturally.

Like it was practiced, like he had done it multiple times.

“Dad?” Niko asked, confused and small.

“Why did he call you Dad?” His voice trembled, and tears welled in his eyes. He looked between me and Torren, confused and hurt.

I smiled at him, forcing myself to stay calm. I held out my hand for him to hold.

Torren stayed silent for a full minute, like he didn’t know what to say.

“Torren is Asher’s godfather,” Saela explained smoothly. She turned to look at Torren, biting her lip with that pitful look on her face.

When did they have a child? Did Saela leave with Torren’s baby?

Torren glanced at Saela reassuringly but stiffly avoided meeting my eyes, or Niko’s. He didn’t say a word in response to what Saela had just said.

Let them play their game. Just don’t forget to be a father to Niko if they want this divorce to go through.

“How are you feeling, little man?” Torren asked Asher.

 I rolled my eyes silently.

“He’s doing better,” Saela replied. “He insisted on coming to school today. I didn’t expect we’d run into you.”

They smiled at each other. They looked… like a happy family. It was sickening.

“Asher, come down now. Let your uncle hold his son too. Don’t steal his daddy,” she joked.

Niko’s hand squeezed mine tighter.

“Don’t be like that,” Torren said. “Asher’s my son too. He’s weak and he needs me.”

He turned to Niko, then stopped. His face fell.

Niko was crying, silent tears streaming down his cheeks.

“You’re crying? Come on, it was—”

“Something just got into my eyes,” Niko said quickly, turning to me.

 “Mommy, can you check?”

My heart shattered. He was hiding it, trying to stay strong. Too strong for a little boy.

“Sure,” I knelt down, wiping his cheeks. “And this is Aunt Saela, your daddy’s classmate and a very good friend,” I added gently.

Niko nodded and greeted politely.

 “Nice to meet you.”

“Good to see you too! It’s Parent’s Day today. Why don’t you join us, Torren?” Saela asked.

He accepted right away. My jaw dropped.

“I thought…” Niko whispered, clutching his bag.

I know, baby. You thought he was too busy.

Guess he isn't so busy now.

Parent's day had been going smoothly with I and Niko seeming like the third and fourth wheel every time.

I kept glancing at the clock, waiting for the toy auction to end so we could leave.

“Mum, Dad, I want that toy,” Niko said, pointing at a toy gun.

“You do? Alright, I’ll bid for it,” I said, smoothing his hair. His eyes lit up.

“Thanks, Mom. Thank you so much.”

I got up with Torren and filled in the bid at the register.

We just had to write down the toy name and bid silently.

Later, they announced the highest bidder. Torren.

Finally, he did something that mattered for Niko.

Torren received it and walked back to our seat while Niko stood up eagerly to receive it from him.

“Mom, Dad got it for me!” He beamed, proud and happy.

“Yes, yes he did.”

But just then, Asher ran over.

And like the world paused, Torren handed the toy to him.

My hand shot out, grabbing his wrist.

“Didn’t you get that for Niko?” I asked, eyebrows raised.

Torren flinched, glanced around, then gave that dismissive sigh that made me want to slap him.

“No.”

“What? Niko wanted that,” I snapped.

“Niko can get another one. Saela texted me that Asher really wanted it.”

Of course. Saela again.

“You heard Niko say he wanted that. You got it for him. Now you're giving it to your mistress’s son?”

I lowered my voice, leaning in.

“At least show some decency, not in front of the kid.”

He shoved my hand away and handed the gift to Asher anyway.

“Torren—”

A small hand tugged on my shirt. I looked down at Niko. He was forcing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“Mom, it’s okay. I didn’t really like it that much,” he whispered.

He was covering it up. My heart cracked.

Then suddenly, a voice echoed through the mindlink. Faint, distant, but familiar. I stopped talking and listened.

“I finally found you, Eryn.”

My eyes widened. I turned around, searching for a face I hadn’t seen in over a decade.

VALE. I'M GONNA KILL HIM. And I was damn serious about it. It kept resounding in my ears and if the voices in my head didn't calm the fuck down any sooner, I might have to go back into that office and beat the shit out of their Governor. The only restraint was the fact that I couldn't let Eryn see the bad and dark parts of me. They weren't exactly sweet. Definitely not made for a woman. “Are you okay?” I questioned as she fastened her seat belt, not saying a word since we left her ex-husband's office. “Yeah, sure. Why not?” She said with a happy smile yet that miserable, sad look in her eyes that cut me open whenever I saw that moist look. “You know we can absolutely cancel if you don't feel like going out anymore.” I said in low tones and her face snapped back to mine in a matter of seconds. Did I say something wrong? “Torren is not enough to dampen my mood.” I felt the smile creeping into my lips and it scared me. This woman was wrecking me. And she probably did

ERYN “Doctor Vale..” I called as he stirred on the hospital bed, fluttering his lashes as though he was finding it difficult to open them. I dropped the wet towel I had been using to dab his face and walked over to the window, shutting it completely as I noticed the light rays casting over his eyes could be a discomfort for him. As he finally opened his eyes, his hands instinctively went to his head as he tried to sit up. “Lay back down. You're still on drips.” I whispered as I pressed his shoulder downward and he stared at me with that curious glint in his eyes. “What happened?” He whispered, waving his fingers slowly as he finally sat up, his back leaning on the head rest while he blinked repeatedly. “The doctor didn't say you'd have loss of memories.” I teased but he just stared at me. “We were in an accident. You collided into an incoming car.” I paused for a second to study his facial features before slapping his arm. “Why would you throw yourself on me like that? I get

RHYSARIO VALE. I tried my fucking best to take my eyes off her lips and ‘try’ to ‘focus’ on the road. It was really a lot of trouble to focus on anything right now. I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, the leather squeaking under my fingers. The sound of my engine revving as I started the car did a little tingle in my brain like it was scratching it or something, almost like the only sound I could trust in this moment. Eryn shifted beside me, buckling herself in with that casual ease that made it look like she belonged anywhere she sat. She glanced my way, her hair falling just enough to brush her cheek. “You look tired.” I nearly choked on my own words as I turned to glare at her subtly. She confuses me. One moment she's all distant and not wanting me anywhere near her and the next time, she's acting all…..this. whatever this is. “I haven’t slept.” I simply answered, stepping on the accelerator a bit, trying not to go over the speed limit. “That’s obvious. I mean,

RHYSARIO VALE. I was parked outside of Torren's office again. As usual. This wasn't the first, second or third time. I stayed there for an unhealthy amount of time and left when she wouldn't come out. It's like the entire universe was trying to tell me that I should probably let her go as she wasn't mine to begin with. I put the key into the ignition and was about starting my car when I saw her walking out of the building with some…members from work I guess? And of course, his face is definitely hard to miss. Her ex husband. God, his face annoys the shit out of me. I just stared at her, I should never have let her resign so easily. I should have come up with something good to make her stay. I bit my lower lip and decided to go back to the hospital. I had become a stalker for a woman that didn't even know I was there most of the time. I rubbed my forehead in frustration as my phone pinged for the umpteenth time today and I raised it to take a look. Another message from ‘The

RHYSARIO VALE I wanted to call her. Nope, scratch that. I needed to call her. I couldn't place a hand on how many times my fingers had hovered over my phone screen, wanting to dial her contact and just hear her voice. I had even gone back to her father's ward more than usual in one day to see if she had come in to check on him at least but everything I tried? Dead ends. And the time I mistakenly dialed the number and it went through, I sort of panicked and dropped it. My fingers trembled, my hands were jittering and everything in me was crumbling. She would definitely be with her ex husband now that they're both working together and damn, that just stung more than it should. I bit my lower lips and aggressively shut the patient's file I was reading, leaning back on my seat with my eyes tightly shut. I need to breathe. I need to calm down. You know what? I admit it. I totally screwed up when I told her to leave my house the other day, I shouldn't have let her. I s

SAELA I stared at the phone screen as Rave’s voice came through quietly, but there was no mistaking the urgency beneath it. My jaw dropped and for an instant, it felt like I was just hearing things. What the hell was this man playing at right now? I looked out the window to where Torren was in his car, the garage and sighed. Leave Veloria with me. He said it like it was simple, like we could just pick up and disappear, and the idea made my chest tighten in a way I wasn’t ready to admit. “Leave with you.” I repeated, the words tasting strange in my mouth, to be honest, I feel like smashing my phone against the wall right now. Anything to stop hearing Rave but he was valuable and Torren? Well, he is beginning to act like an ass. I have no idea when things would blow over. “Just… walk away from everything here. Torren, this house, the life I’ve built, how can you expect that from me?” His voice softened, and I could tell he was being careful now, like he was trying not to brea
