Cassia woke to the sound of people moving around and talking to each other. Some of the people were caring for the ill and injured. Food was being passed around, some went off to hunt. She stretched and groaned from sleeping on the hard ground. She got up and meandered through the crowd to find Ogra, Duncan, and BoldR. When she found them they were already discussing what the plans should be moving forward.

“Good morning your highness. So glad you could join us.” Duncan cheerfully addressed her.

“Please Duncan I’m not ready for any of it yet.” Filled with fatigue, fear, and a plethora of other emotions, Cassia plopped down next to Ogra and sat silently.     It seems like yesterday I was sword fitting with my dad, picking fresh fruit from the orchard with my mom and giving my little sister piggy back rides around in the yard. The weekly trips to the trader’s market. I miss the smell of fresh baked bread with melted butter, and the children stories. I was young, naive, and care free. How I long for yesterday.     Making winter preparations was not for the faint of heart. Duncan, BoldR, and Dolios were already standing in the heart of the village discussing what was needed for the up and coming winter, when Cassia approached. “ I refuse to drink the foul tasting wild animal blood.     The Sun was shining bright when Cassia finally awoke. Liliana had been bouncing up and down in her bed laughing. When Cassia crawled out of the bed and walked over to her she raised her arms up. She looked up and grinned and said “ uppeas”. She picked her up and set her down on the floor. Liliana stood there waiting. “ Let’s get you dressed for the day shall we?” Liliana clapped her hands. Cassia picked out two outfits for her to choose from. She held out the clothes in front of her. Liliana grabbed at the clothes that she wanted. Cassia then dressed her sister in a simple calico dress with some cotton socks. She then got dressed in her Calico dress and cardigan sweater with striped socks with her hunting boots. She looked outside to see if anyone was up yet. The village looked quite still.     Seeing Willow and Liliana waiting there alive and well filled Cassia’s heart with glee. She asked Belthazar to stop and jumped down from the wagon. She ran over to them and smothered them in a huge hug. Liliana raised up her arms for Cassia to pick her up. Cassia grabbed her up and held her tightly, she peppered her with light kisses. Liliana laughed joyfully, every giggle warmed Cassia’s heart.     The loading of the wagon took longer than expected. BoldR and Duncan had to assist a lot of them into the wagon. Especially the halflings. Vampires can be exceptionally cruel to half breeds, the fact that they can survive on both food and blood they were deprived of both. They were so weak and emaciated they looked like living skeletons with skin. Plus their regenerative abilities are not as strong as a pure blood so it takes them longer to heal. It also didn’t help that their bonds were made of silver and they were given vervain which weakened them even more. The wolves were in better shape after they were fed, their healing was slow by incredibly high amounts of wolf’s bane. They all were covered in various amounts of whip scars. It made Cassia’s heart ached for their suffering. Melba was truly an evil person. To make it easier on Belthazar those of us that could walk were making the trip on foot.
