Chapter 2: The Bride At Table Nine

The reception was held in the west wing of the Moretti estate, a glass roofed hall overlooking a garden of white lilies and black marble fountains.

Everything shimmered.

Crystal chandeliers reflected off polished floors. Waiters moved like shadows in white gloves. A string quartet played somewhere above the crowd, their music floating through the air like something too expensive to touch.

Zara had never seen a place so beautiful.

And never felt so out of place.

“Mrs. Moretti, this way.”

A hostess led her between round tables dressed in ivory silk. Guests smiled politely as she passed, but their eyes lingered a second too long; curious, measuring, whispering after she moved on.

She searched for Adrian.

He stood near the center of the hall, surrounded by men in dark suits. One of them laughed and clapped him on the shoulder.

“To the merger,” the man said, raising his champagne.

Merger.

The word struck her again.

Adrian noticed her watching. For a moment, his expression tightened, as if he had been caught forgetting something important. He excused himself from the group and walked toward her.

“You disappeared,” he said.

“I was in the church.”

His gaze flickered briefly, almost apologetic, but it vanished too quickly for her to trust it.

“You should be sitting,” he said.

“With my husband?”

A beat of silence passed between them.

Adrian glanced toward the head table where his mother was already seated beside two foreign investors.

“You’ll sit at table nine,” he said quietly.

Zara blinked. “Table nine?”

“It’s only for tonight.”

Only for tonight.

She looked around the hall. The head table was elevated beneath a canopy of white roses. Every member of the Moretti family was seated there.

Every member except her.

A strange heat crept up her neck.

“I’m your wife,” she said, keeping her voice low.

“And I’m trying to avoid a scene.”

The words were calm, controlled, and somehow more painful than if he had shouted.

Before she could respond, someone called his name.

“Adrian!”

A woman in a deep emerald dress crossed the room with effortless confidence. She was stunning, tall, elegant, and far too familiar with the man standing beside Zara.

She kissed Adrian’s cheek.

“You got married without warning me.”

Zara felt him go still.

The woman finally turned to her, eyes bright with surprise.

“Oh,” she said softly. “You’re the bride.”

Not your wife.

Not Mrs. Moretti.

The bride.

As if Zara were a temporary role.

“Zara, this is Elena Russo,” Adrian said.

The name landed with the weight of something already known.

Elena smiled, but there was history in the smile.

“I used to know Adrian very well.”

Used to.

Zara looked at her husband.

He did not deny it.

A waiter approached with three glasses of champagne. Elena took one. Adrian took another. Zara left hers untouched.

“Congratulations,” Elena said, studying her carefully. “You’ve married the most difficult man in Milan.”

“Milan?” Zara repeated before she could stop herself.

Elena’s brows lifted slightly. “You didn’t know?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Excuse us, Elena.”

The woman gave a graceful shrug and walked away, disappearing into the crowd as if she belonged there more than Zara ever could.

Zara turned slowly to Adrian.

“What didn’t I know?”

He exhaled once, the sound edged with impatience.

“The merger requires me to relocate to Milan for several months.”

Her stomach dropped.

“You’re leaving?”

“After the honeymoon.”

“What honeymoon?”

For the first time that evening, Adrian looked directly into her eyes.

There was no cruelty there.

Only exhaustion.

“The one everyone in this room believes we’re taking.”

The music swelled around them.

Couples laughed. Glasses clinked. Somewhere, cameras flashed again.

Zara stared at the man she had married only hours ago and realized she knew almost nothing about him, not where he was going, not who Elena was, not why investors were celebrating his wedding like a business victory.

And then she noticed the small ivory card tucked into the pocket of his suit jacket.

A card she had not seen before.

The edge of a woman’s handwriting was visible beneath the fold.

“If you change your mind, meet me before midnight.”

Adrian followed her gaze.

For the first time all night, he looked alarmed.

And Zara suddenly understood something terrifying.

The silence between their vows was not empty.

It was hiding another choice.

The storm refused to end.Hours seemed to pass in fragments of rain, firelight, and unanswered questions.Zara had stopped trying to make sense of the timeline. Wedding. Archive. Gunshots. Isabella. The river. The vineyard. It felt less like one night and more like several lives stitched together badly.Adrian eventually stood and disappeared into the small kitchen. She heard cupboards opening, water running, the muted clink of ceramic. When he returned, he carried two mugs.“Coffee,” he said.Zara accepted one carefully. It was strong, bitter, and unexpectedly good.“You keep emergency coffee in abandoned properties too?”“Now that,” Adrian said, sitting across from her, “is completely normal behavior.”The faint smile that followed surprised both of them. For a moment, the cottage almost felt safe. Then the clock on the wall ticked to 2:17 a.m.And Adrian’s phone rang. Both of them froze. The sound was unnaturally loud in the quiet room.Adrian stared at the screen. His expression c

Rain swallowed the world outside the boathouse. It fell in silver sheets across the abandoned vineyard, turning the gravel paths into streams and the rows of vines into dark, shifting shadows.Zara stood beneath the narrow awning, water dripping from the ends of her hair, the lily pendant still clenched in her hand.Adrian closed the trapdoor behind them and slid the rusted bolt into place. For the first time since they had fled the archive, there was no sound of footsteps. No shouting. No alarms.Only rain. And the silence between them.“This place is abandoned?” Zara asked.“Officially.”“Unofficially?”A faint, humorless curve touched his mouth. “My family keeps too many places that are officially abandoned.”She should have been exhausted.Instead, her mind felt painfully awake.Isabella Moretti. The name had changed everything. If the woman connected to her birth belonged to Adrian’s family, then the mystery was no longer about a hidden past.It was about blood. And blood had con

Adrian did not slow down. His hand closed around Zara’s wrist as he pulled her through the darkness behind the archive, the sound of shouting and pounding footsteps echoing behind them.Another gunshot cracked through the tunnel.Zara flinched.“Keep moving,” Adrian said. The passage narrowed sharply, forcing them to run single file. The air grew colder with every step, carrying the scent of damp stone and running water. In her fist, the lily pendant dug into her skin.Isabella.The name repeated in her mind with every heartbeat.A name she had never heard before.A name that might belong to her mother. The tunnel sloped downward. Water glimmered ahead, catching the faint emergency lights that flickered along the ceiling.A river flowed beneath the estate. Not a stream.A real underground river, dark and restless, disappearing into the shadows beyond the stone arches.Zara stopped in shock.“There’s a river under your house?”Adrian finally released her wrist and turned, breathing har

The words struck harder than a slap.Zara stared at Luca Moretti, certain she had misheard him.“What did you say?”Luca’s face remained unreadable in the flashlight’s pale glow.“I said your father disappeared because of you.”“No.” The denial came instantly. “That doesn’t make any sense.”“It rarely does at the beginning.”Adrian stepped between them, his voice sharp. “Explain.”Luca ignored him. His attention stayed on Zara.“Daniel Vale reopened your file three days ago.”Zara’s pulse quickened.“Matteo said that.”“He didn’t tell you why.”Luca reached into his coat and produced a folded document. Water stained the edges, as if it had been carried through the rain.“He requested access to sealed records connected to your birth.”Zara hesitated before taking it.At the bottom of the page, above a blurred signature, she read:Reason for request: immediate risk to subject.Subject.Not daughter.A cold shiver ran through her.“What risk?”Luca looked at Adrian before answering.“The

The disconnected tone buzzed in the darkness.Adrian stared at the phone for a second, then lowered it slowly.Neither of them moved. The tunnel seemed to shrink around them.Zara was the first to speak.“My father reopened my file?”Her voice sounded distant, as if someone else had spoken.Adrian did not answer immediately.“He could have reopened it for many reasons.”“That’s not a denial.”“No.”The honesty hit harder every time.Zara turned away, pressing a hand against the cold stone wall. All evening, the story had been changing shape beneath her feet.First a marriage. Then a secret. Then a hidden connection. Now a file that apparently existed somewhere in the Moretti archives; one her own father had accessed.“What kind of file are we talking about?” she asked.Adrian’s flashlight shifted slightly.“In my family, a file usually means records. Birth records. Medical records. Legal records. Sometimes things that were never meant to become official.”The rain thundered faintly ab
