* Regina *

In a month of staying in the Western pack, I found new friends, or rather just a friend. His name is Brent. He is a young warrior of the West. Although I am not interested in making more friends, I accepted him because he is nice to me almost every time, so I couldn't help but be his friend, too.

He moved through the servants' quarters easily, the sort of man who carried no tremor in his hands and left no question in his face. He had come to help with the morning chores, like he always did, though "help" felt wrong, he made it feel like an exchange, not a task. He'd already tied a knot in a coil of rope, the muscle in his forearm flexing the way it always made me look at small things and then forget to breathe.

"Morning, Regina," he said, voice low so the others wouldn't pry. He offered a crust of yesterday's bread without waiting for me to take it. The gesture was so ordinary I almost believed it was only that and I liked it.

I took the bread and bit into it too quickly, t

    * Alpha Archer *This time the venue has changed, the Alpha King's guards led us to the summit's hollow, a wide, ancient clearing surrounded by jagged stone and cold, whispering air. The mist curled low across the ground like living breath, hiding the earth beneath it. It was said this was the mountain's oldest trial ground, the place where even the strongest Alphas had broken in spirit.When the Alpha King finally stepped forward to see us, his presence silenced the wind itself. His gaze swept across the gathered four Alphas, cold and knowing, as if he could see the beast that lurked inside each one of us who faced him."This trial," he declared, his voice carrying over the stone walls, "will test the one thing that unbinds even the most disciplined warrior. The weakness that hides in every heart of a male wolf, lust and desire."A shiver passed through the assembled Alphas. All Alphas are males and all have mates except for me.No one spoke, but I could feel the discomfort ripple th

    * Alpha Archer *The cold had settled into the whole part of the mountain. Each dawn came wrapped in mist and silence, the kind that made even the strongest wolves feel that there was something hidden beneath it. I could feel it in my warriors the tension, the strain of the summit dragging on, the trials testing not only strength but loyalty, patience, and will of each pack.That morning, before the horns of the Alpha King called us again, I stood in the training grounds with Beta Kael watching the surroundings. The ground was frozen hard beneath our boots, our breath rising in white clouds as we moved. I wanted the warriors sharp, not just ready, but unbreakable and always alertBeta Kael lunged first, a feint to my left, then a twist that aimed for my ribs. I blocked it with a quick step, pivoted, and slammed my palm hard into his shoulder. He hit the dirt, rolled, and came back up without hesitation. Good stamina. He was improving his skills better."Again," I said, my voice rough

    * Regina *The days that followed were colder than the mountain winds in the camp. Even when the sun rose in the sky, it brought no warmth to my cold skin. The air seemed thicker, heavier, as though the world itself knew what I had done and refused to forgive me for it.When I closed my eyes at night, I saw Carla's face and what I had done to her. Not as she had been before the fight, angry, snarling, but as she had been in the final heartbeat before her death. Her eyes wide, her body limp beneath my jaws, her scent fading from the air as I took out her life. It haunted me, that last breath she gave I could still feel it. Sometimes I thought I could still hear it when the camp went silent.I woke up once from my sleep, screaming—the other omegas stirred from their cots, startled at the sound I made. I mumbled an apology and turned away, pretending to go back to sleep. But I couldn't afterwards. The blood was still under my nails in my dreams, no matter how many times I scrubbed my han

    * Regina *Another day was finished. And when the next dawn came, the horns from the summit called again, low, drawn-out, and almost mournful. The sound rolled across the mountain slopes like the voice of something ancient, demanding silence and obedience from all the wolves. I felt the vibration in my bones as I stood among the other omegas and warriors of the pack, my palms slick with sweat from anticipation despite the cold weather.The Alpha King stood on the rise overlooking the valley, his black cloak whispering in the wind. His presence was heavier than the mist around us, it pressed down on the chest, made breathing an act of submission for everyone."Today," he said, his voice ringing over the gathered packs, "we test obedience of the pack wolves."His gaze swept across the assembled wolves, lingering on the Alphas, and then, like a knife's edge, it cut to me. I lowered my head immediately in respect. My wolf whimpered in my chest at the sheer weight of his dominance over me.

    * Alpha Archer *Victory was not easy to achieve. That was the word that lingered in the air when the horns sounded again, long and deep, announcing the end of the trial. The canyon's mist peeled away like a smoke cover, revealing the valley bathed in dying sunlight. My wolves from the West howled, the sound rolling like thunder over the cliffs. We had done it again, even when it was tough.I stood there with my chest heaving, the taste of metal and dust still lingering in my mouth. Beside me, Regina stood quiet and trembling, her cloak torn, her palms still faintly glowing from the energy she tried to give me. She looked small and fragile, almost, but I knew better now that she had strength inside. I had seen how she faced illusions meant to break the spirit of even an Alpha. She didn't cower in fear. She fought hard and won with me."Alpha Archer of the Western Pack!" someone called from the crowd. It was one of the royal scribes with a voice that was both sharp and formal. "You an

    * Regina *We went inside the place covered with mist. It was thick and heavy and cold like the fear of the wolves who doesn't know anything behind it, coiling around my ankles as though it wanted to pull me under. The moment the iron gates shut behind us, the sound echoed like thunder through the canyon, and the world beyond was gone. Only this gray maze of whispers and shadows remained. We were in a different place at a different time.I couldn't see more than a few feet ahead because of the mist. Even Alpha Archer's tall figure blurred and wavered, his shoulders dissolving into fog each time I blinked. I reached out instinctively, my fingers brushing the edge of his cloak. His head turned slightly at the contact, but he said nothing.He hadn't looked at me once since the Alpha King called my name. I wonder why that is?The silence between us was colder than the mist. But I did not say a word to break that either.Even if I wanted to speak, to tell him that I didn't mean to cause h
