The Empty Name

Adrian stared at the invitation.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time, as though staring harder might somehow make the answer appear.

It didn’t.

The cream-colored card was unlike any wedding invitation he had ever seen.

There was no elaborate announcement.

No photograph.

No romantic quotation.

No family crest.

Not even the name of the groom.

Only Elena’s name.

And beneath it, a date.

A location.

A time.

And one sentence printed in elegant black lettering:

Your presence is requested.

That was it.

No explanation.

No groom.

No clue.

Adrian’s fingers tightened around the card.

“She has to be joking.”

Sophia remained silent.

She had been standing across the office since Elena left.

Adrian looked at her.

“What did she say to you?”

Sophia swallowed.

The memory of Elena’s whisper returned.

She wasn’t going to tell him.

Not yet.

“I can’t tell you.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“You can’t?”

Sophia immediately regretted the wording.

“I mean… I don’t think I’m supposed to.”

“She told you something.”

“Yes.”

“And you won’t tell me.”

“Correct.”

His eyebrows rose.

Sophia gave him an apologetic smile.

“Sorry.”

Adrian looked at her for several seconds.

Then he glanced down at the invitation again.

There was something almost insulting about it.

Elena had spent six months refusing to explain herself.

Now she had returned, told him she was getting married, and handed him an invitation that didn’t even tell him who the groom was.

It felt deliberate.

Everything with Elena felt deliberate.

His phone suddenly rang.

Adrian answered without taking his eyes off the invitation.

“Yes?”

A voice responded from the other end.

“We’ve received another lead concerning Elena.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

A pause.

“Sir?”

“Stop.”

“We were about to—”

“I said stop.”

His voice was cold enough to end the conversation immediately.

The person on the other end hesitated.

“Do you want us to suspend the investigation temporarily?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Elena’s name printed on the card.

“End it.”

Silence.

“Completely?”

“Completely.”

“But the information regarding September—”

“I don’t care.”

“Mr. Vale, there are still several unexplained connections between Elena and—”

“I said I’m done.”

His voice cracked through the office.

Sophia looked up.

Adrian rarely raised his voice.

“Stop investigating Elena,” he said. “Stop sending me photographs. Stop digging through her past. Stop contacting people connected to her.”

Another pause.

Then:

“Understood.”

Adrian ended the call.

For several seconds, he remained completely still.

Then he picked up the invitation.

He looked at Elena’s name one final time.

“She wants to get married?”

His voice was barely audible.

“Fine.”

He folded the invitation once.

Then again.

He placed it inside the drawer of his desk.

And locked it.

Sophia watched him.

“Are you sure that’s what you want?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I’ve spent six months trying to understand her.”

He leaned back in his chair.

“I’m done.”

There was something in his expression that made Sophia believe him.

Or at least made her believe he desperately wanted to.

“From now on,” Adrian said, “I don’t want to hear Elena’s name.”

Sophia nodded.

“Understood.”

Adrian opened the next file on his desk.

“Good.”

And that was the end of Elena Laurent.

At least, that was what Adrian told himself.

⸻

It lasted approximately eleven minutes.

At 10:17 a.m., Adrian was already working.

At 11:30, he had finished three reports.

By lunch, he had reviewed two European contracts, approved four financial documents, rejected a proposed acquisition, and sent Claire twelve emails.

By 6:00 p.m., most of the executive floor had emptied.

Adrian was still working.

At 9:45 p.m., Claire returned to the office after going home to retrieve the laptop charger she had forgotten.

She stopped outside Adrian’s office.

The lights were still on.

She sighed.

Of course they were.

She knocked.

“Come in.”

Claire opened the door.

Adrian was sitting behind his desk.

His jacket was gone.

His sleeves were rolled up.

His tie was loosened.

There were documents covering almost every available surface.

Claire looked around.

“Did a paper factory explode in here?”

“No.”

“Because it looks like one did.”

Adrian didn’t look up.

“What do you need?”

“My charger.”

“Take it.”

She picked it up from the side table.

Then she looked at him.

“Have you eaten?”

“I’m fine.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I’m working.”

“That’s also not what I asked.”

Adrian finally looked up.

Claire crossed her arms.

“You haven’t eaten.”

“I had coffee.”

“Coffee isn’t food.”

“It has calories.”

Claire stared at him.

“That is the most depressing sentence you’ve ever said.”

Adrian returned to his screen.

“I’m busy.”

Claire shook her head.

“You know, there are healthier ways to cope with emotional trauma.”

“I don’t have emotional trauma.”

“You’re working at ten o’clock on a Sunday.”

Adrian paused.

Claire smiled.

“Exactly.”

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Oh, and Adrian?”

“What?”

“Go home.”

“No.”

“Sleep.”

“No.”

“Eat.”

“No.”

“Speak to another human being.”

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“Do you know you’re very difficult?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She left.

Adrian continued working.

⸻

The next morning, Sophia arrived at eight sharp.

She walked into the office carrying a coffee in one hand and a stack of papers in the other.

Claire was already there.

Sophia looked around.

“Where is everyone?”

“Alive, hopefully.”

“That’s encouraging.”

Claire lowered her voice.

“He’s been here since before seven.”

Sophia stopped.

“Adrian?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Did he go home?”

“I don’t think so.”

Sophia stared at her.

“You mean he slept here?”

Claire shrugged.

“I wouldn’t put it past him.”

Sophia looked toward Adrian’s office.

Then back at Claire.

“Does he normally do this?”

“No.”

A beat.

“Actually, yes.”

Sophia sighed.

“That’s concerning.”

“Very.”

They stood in silence for a moment.

Then Sophia whispered,

“Should we intervene?”

Claire looked horrified.

“Absolutely not.”

“Why?”

“Because I enjoy being employed.”

Sophia nodded thoughtfully.

“Fair.”

They started walking toward their desks.

Then Sophia stopped.

“Wait.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

Sophia pointed toward Adrian’s office.

“Is that him?”

Claire looked.

Adrian was standing behind the glass wall, holding a coffee cup and reading a document.

Sophia narrowed her eyes.

“Does he ever blink?”

Claire considered it.

“Not when he’s angry.”

“He’s angry?”

“He’s Adrian.”

Sophia nodded.

“Right.”

They continued walking.

Then Sophia suddenly stopped again.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“Do you think he’s eaten?”

Claire sighed.

“I knew you were going to say that.”

“Well?”

“No.”

Sophia looked thoughtful.

Then she placed her coffee on her desk.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“The cafeteria.”

“Why?”

“We’re getting him breakfast.”

Claire stared at her.

“You’re brave.”

“No.”

Sophia picked up her handbag.

“I’m just stupid.”

Claire laughed.

“That’s the first thing we’ve agreed on.”

⸻

Twenty minutes later, Sophia returned carrying a paper bag.

Claire followed behind her.

“You realize if he throws that at you, I’m pretending I don’t know you.”

Sophia glanced at her.

“He won’t throw it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because throwing food would be wasteful.”

Claire laughed.

They reached Adrian’s office.

Sophia knocked.

“Come in.”

She entered.

Adrian looked up.

His expression was unreadable.

“What is that?”

Sophia held up the bag.

“Breakfast.”

“I don’t want it.”

“I didn’t ask.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at Sophia.

Sophia realized what she had said.

“Sorry.”

A pause.

“But you’re eating.”

“I’m working.”

“You can work and eat.”

“I don’t have time.”

Sophia placed the bag on his desk.

“Then consider it an efficiency strategy.”

Adrian looked at the bag.

Then at her.

“Efficiency strategy?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded solemnly from the doorway.

“Very scientific.”

Sophia glanced at her.

“Thank you.”

Adrian sighed.

“What did you bring?”

“Sandwich.”

“I don’t eat sandwiches in the morning.”

Sophia looked at Claire.

Claire shrugged.

Sophia turned back.

“Then eat something else.”

Adrian stared at her.

Sophia stared back.

Neither moved.

Finally, Adrian reached into the bag.

He took out the sandwich.

Sophia smiled.

“See?”

“I haven’t eaten it.”

“But you’re holding it.”

“That’s progress.”

Claire laughed.

Adrian looked toward her.

“You can leave.”

Claire immediately stepped backward.

“Absolutely.”

Sophia picked up her papers.

“Enjoy your sandwich.”

Adrian gave her a look.

Sophia smiled innocently.

Then she and Claire left.

The moment the door closed, Claire whispered,

“You know you’re the only person who can order Adrian Vale to eat.”

Sophia looked at her.

“I didn’t order him.”

“You absolutely did.”

“No.”

“You said, ‘Then eat something else.’”

Sophia thought about it.

“Oh.”

Claire grinned.

“Congratulations.”

“For what?”

“You’ve survived long enough to start bossing around the boss.”

Sophia laughed.

“I think I’m getting fired.”

“Probably.”

They continued down the corridor.

Behind them, Adrian stared at the sandwich.

For a moment, something almost like amusement touched his face.

Then it disappeared.

He opened another report.

He worked.

And worked.

And worked.

Because as long as there were numbers to analyze, contracts to review, meetings to attend, and decisions to make, Adrian didn’t have to think about Elena.

He didn’t have to think about the wedding invitation locked inside his desk.

He didn’t have to wonder who she was marrying.

And most importantly—

he didn’t have to ask himself why the thought of another man standing beside her still hurt.

So Adrian buried himself deeper.

He told himself he was moving on.

He told himself he was finished with Elena.

He told himself the investigation was over.

But inside the locked drawer of his desk, beneath confidential documents and old contracts, one cream-colored envelope remained.

And written across it was a single name.

Elena.

The one name Adrian had sworn he never wanted to hear again.

Sophia Bennett had discovered three things since joining Vale Corporation.First, billionaires apparently believed coffee was an acceptable substitute for lunch.Second, confidential documents had a strange habit of becoming more interesting the moment someone told her not to read them. And third—Adrian Vale was terrible at hiding when he was worried.Unfortunately for him, Sophia was excellent at noticing things people were trying not to show. She sat at her desk, staring at the European turnover reports spread across her computer screen.Something was wrong. Not slightly wrong. Not maybe-the-spreadsheet-formula-is-broken wrong.Something was deliberately wrong.Sophia leaned closer to the screen."Come on..."She compared the original employee records with the final reports again.Several complaints were missing.Entire sections had been removed. And the names that appeared in the preliminary documents seemed to vanish once the reports reached senior management. She clicked between
