“Yes, sir…!” Brandon replied curtly.

Jack Black stared piercingly at Brandon once again, noting internally that the young man before him possessed an unshakeable resolve and a dangerous, reckless edge.

Jack Black was a former military officer who had pivoted to running a private security firm, providing bodyguards for anyone willing to hire them.

His final rank in the military had been Captain. He had served ten years in prison for killing a man, an incident that also led to his dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.

Upon his release from prison, he reconnected with an old comrade who had since been promoted to Brigadier General. Through this friend, Jack Black was offered a job as a bodyguard for a high-profile businessman with a long list of enemies.

Born Jack Samuel, he earned the moniker "Jack Black" due to his dark, Eastern Indonesian complexion.

When his contract with the businessman expired, the client advised him to launch his own bodyguard agency.

Taking the advice to heart, Jack initially recruited two men—former military and police personnel who had also been dishonorably discharged over various incidents.

Over time, Jack Black’s reputation grew as someone who could guarantee his clients' safety, enabling him to expand his squad by recruiting eighteen more operatives.

Contracts flooded in continuously, mostly from businessmen or corrupt officials offering lucrative retainer fees.

Now, Jack Black’s security firm—fittingly named CV Jack Black—was swamped with orders to protect high-value clients.

He maintained a close relationship with Senior Commissioner Roni. Whenever special guests or wealthy businessmen in the Commissioner’s network required personal protection, Roni would immediately reach out to him.

Naturally, Jack Black understood the arrangement and never hesitated to split commissions with his old friend.

“Is it true you’re a master marksman?” Jack Black probed.

“I know my way around a gun, sir.”

“What does that mean, exactly?” Jack Black asked, slightly puzzled by Brandon’s blunt, laconic responses.

“When I line up a target in my sights, I rarely miss. It’d be a waste of ammunition otherwise, sir.”

Jack Black burst into laughter at Brandon’s deadpan honesty.

After exchanging small talk for about thirty minutes, Jack Black decided to hire Brandon on a two-month probationary period. If he performed well, he would be brought on permanently. Brandon agreed, and that very day he signed the contract presented by Mita—Jack Black’s tomboyish yet charming personal secretary.

Brandon officially started work that day. The rapid hiring process was driven by Jack Black’s deep trust in Commissioner Roni’s recommendation, confident that Brandon would not let him down.

“Just keep a tight leash on his temper. When Brandon gets pushed over the edge, he can kill a man in cold blood,” Commissioner Roni had cautioned—a warning that only made Jack Black chuckle with satisfaction, as he preferred men with a cold, ruthless edge.

Mita introduced Brandon to fourteen fellow bodyguards. Most of them were heavily built, as Jack Black mandated regular weight training. The office featured a dedicated gym where operatives worked out during downtime between assignments.

In total, Jack Black managed twenty-four bodyguards. Ten were currently deployed on active client assignments, leaving fourteen at the headquarters who had just finished their shifts and were unwinding at the gym.

Naturally, Brandon joined the physical conditioning to stay in peak shape. Occasionally, Jack Black took his crew to a firing range to hone their marksmanship. He also required his men to train in martial arts dojos, knowing that every bodyguard would eventually face off against hostile threats attempting to breach client security.

It was during these sessions that Jack Black came to admire Brandon’s martial prowess, as the young operative single-handedly outmatched three seasoned men at once during spar practice.

Combined with his lethal precision with firearms, the entire team gradually grew to respect the taciturn Brandon, who rarely ever cracked a smile.

True to Jack Black’s expectations, Brandon’s performance over the two-month trial was exceptional. He executed every assigned detail flawlessly.

During those two months, Brandon guarded five different clients—mostly high-net-worth entrepreneurs and celebrities—and the feedback was glowing across the board.

“He’s just so cold, almost like a hitman for hire. He barely speaks, let alone smiles, and when you talk to him, he answers in three words or less!” one client remarked to Jack Black.

Jack Black merely smiled, explaining that it was simply Brandon’s nature and asking clients for their understanding.

Jack Black stared at each of the five men lined up before him—a selection from his total roster of twenty-five operatives. His gaze settled on one particular subordinate who had joined the company merely two months prior: Brandon. He scanned the young man from head to toe. Standing tall and powerfully built at twenty-five years old, Brandon presented an imposing presence. His hair was neatly combed, framing an oval face with smooth tan skin and a sharp, defined nose. His expression remained utterly cold and reserved. While a faint spark usually resided in his eyes, whenever his lips pressed into a tight line, his gaze hardened—making him appear all the more fierce and unapproachable. At a glance, Jack Black couldn't help but think that Brandon fit the exact profile of a ruthless hitman, carrying an aura that suggested a complete absence of mercy. His short-sleeved dress shirt hugged his well-proportioned, solid torso, paired with fitted jeans that accentuated his long, powerful legs—c

“Thank you so much for helping me, mister. My name is Novia. Who are you? Are you really a former cop, like those two officers said earlier?” she asked, looking at Brandon as he sat on a chair while she remained seated on the edge of the bed, since the room had no living room.“Yeah… I’m a former cop… who got fired. Just call me Brandon!” Brandon replied curtly.“Why did he treat you so rough, Novia? Who is that guy anyway? If you want to talk about it, go ahead. If not, that’s fine too,” Brandon said, his cold demeanor still lingering as he stared piercingly at Novia, who was dressed only in a loose house dress.“His name is Punang. He’s my ex-boyfriend. He has a violent temper, loves to drink, and works as an extortionist—basically a street thug. We broke up a long time ago. He wanted to get back together, but I refused. If I went back to him, he’d torture me to death. I don’t even know how he found out my address here, seeing as I’ve only lived in this boarding house for three mont

It was a blessing that his service pistol had already been returned to his unit. Had it been within arm's reach, he might have turned the weapon on himself in a moment of pure despair.Brandon had never been one for alcohol; he preferred hitting the gym or practicing karate to blow off steam. As he sat drowning in his frustration, a commotion erupted from the unit right next door.At first, Brandon tried to ignore it. But the noise quickly escalated into loud thuds, followed by the muffled sobs of a woman in distress. That was the breaking point. Brandon loathed nothing more than seeing a woman abused. Stepping out of his room, he followed the sound of the confrontation. The door to the neighboring unit stood ajar. Just inside, a man had his arm clamped tightly around a woman's neck in a brutal chokehold."What do you think you're doing, man? Let her go—you're going to suffocate her!" Brandon called out, his posture instantly reverting to that of an active officer.A few neighbors had

Police Senior Commissioner Roni stared into Brandon’s cold face. As an active detective in the criminal investigation division, he instantly picked up on the burning vengeance flickering in the young man's eyes—a deep resentment toward his former commanding officer, who had set him up during a drug bust operation, using him as a scapegoat to get him dishonorably discharged. After taking a sip of his drink and letting out a slow breath, Commissioner Roni asked what brought Brandon to see him.“I need a job, Commander!” Brandon replied flatly, skipping any pleasantries.“What kind of work are you looking for?”“Anything. I’ll even take a hitman gig if that’s what it takes!”Commissioner Roni recoiled slightly in surprise, then chuckled softly. He pulled out a cigarette and offered one to Brandon, who took it without hesitation.“Would you be interested in working as a bodyguard?” Commissioner Roni offered. Brandon nodded immediately, no questions asked.“Hmm… alright, give me a moment.”

  • The Single Heir   Chapter 2: A Different Face

Before heading back, he took a moment to visit his mother’s grave one last time.“I promise you, Mom, I’ll pay back all your debts and return Dad’s money… I’m graduating from the academy in another year!” Brandon had vowed in his heart back then. Ever since that day, his once cheerful, warm face had turned cold and reserved.Brandon hadn't bothered saying goodbye to his father back then either. He had slipped away quietly, figuring it was pointless anyway—it would only trigger another outburst and berating from the man. What Brandon didn't know at the time was that the man wasn't his biological father. When Bahar married his mother—a former overseas domestic worker in Malaysia—she was already pregnant. Upon getting married, she decided to remain a homemaker rather than heading back overseas.Brandon had discovered the truth entirely by accident. It happened when he had returned home to hand-deliver an invitation to his police academy graduation, where he was set to be commissioned as
