LOGINLily's POV
For a second, nobody in the room moved.
Rosa stood in the doorway, twisting her apron in her hands. She looked at me like she was trying to solve a puzzle. I was the woman she had called Mrs. Blackwood all week, and now another woman downstairs was using my name.
Ethan spoke first. "Rosa, is my grandmother home?"
"No, sir," Rosa said. "Mrs. Eleanor went to dinner with friends. Mr. Richard is out too."
"Good," Ethan said. "Bring the visitor up here. Don't tell anyone else she came. Can you do that for me?"
Rosa nodded fast and hurried away.
I turned to Ethan. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. "What are you doing? If she comes up here, she'll tell you everything."
"She can't," Ethan said. "Think about it, Lily. If Vanessa tells the truth, she has to admit her family sent a stranger to marry me. My grandmother would destroy the Sinclairs for that." He settled back against the pillows. "She came here because she heard I woke up. Now she wants her place back, and she has no idea that I already know."
"So what do I do?"
"You stay right where you are," he said. "You're my wife."
I heard her heels on the stairs before I saw her. Then Vanessa walked in, and it was like looking into a mirror that had been dipped in money. She wore a white coat and gold earrings, and her hair was the same as mine because they had cut mine to match hers. She smelled like expensive perfume.
She didn't even look at me. She went straight to the bed with tears in her eyes.
"Ethan," she said. "Oh, Ethan, I came the second I heard. I was so scared. I couldn't sleep the whole time you were gone."
Ethan looked at her for a long moment. Then he turned to me with a confused face. "Vanessa, who is this woman?"
Vanessa froze. Her mouth fell open, and I almost felt sorry for her.
"I'm Vanessa," she said. "Ethan, it's me. That girl is nobody. She's a waitress my mother found. She isn't your wife."
"That's strange," Ethan said slowly. "Because I remember a wedding. I remember a woman holding my hand and talking to me for hours while I couldn't move. And I remember my grandmother watching her sign the marriage papers." He tilted his head. "Where were you?"
Vanessa's face turned red. "I was in Paris. My mother told me to stay there until things got better."
"My fiancée was in a coma, and you went shopping," Ethan said.
"I didn't know you would wake up!"
The words came out loud and ugly, and she slapped a hand over her mouth right after. But it was too late. Even Duke lifted his head and stared at her.
Ethan's voice went quiet and cold. "No, you didn't. That's the whole point, isn't it?"
Vanessa looked at me then, really looked at me for the first time. Her eyes were full of hate.
"You think you've won," she said to me. "You think you can steal my life because you have my face. You're a cheap copy, Lily. That's all you'll ever be."
"I didn't steal anything," I said. My voice shook, but I made myself keep going. "Your mother came to me. You didn't want him, so your family paid me to stand in your place. I only said yes because my brother was dying."
"I don't care about your brother," Vanessa said.
"I know," I told her. "You've never cared about anyone but yourself."
She stepped toward me like she wanted to slap me. Duke stood up and growled, low and deep, and she stopped where she was.
Ethan didn't raise his voice. "I think you should leave now."
"You'll regret this, Ethan," Vanessa said. "When your grandmother finds out what she really is, you'll both be finished."
"Then tell her," he said. "Tell her tonight. Tell her your parents lied to the Blackwood family and sold me a fake bride. Go ahead."
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it. She couldn't say a thing, and all three of us knew it.
She turned around and walked out without another word. Her heels clicked down the stairs, fast and angry, and then the front door slammed so hard I felt it through the floor.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. My legs felt weak, and I sat down hard in the chair.
Ethan reached over and put his hand on top of mine. His fingers were cold, but he held on until my hands stopped shaking.
"She'll come back," I said. "You know she will. She looked at me like she wanted me dead."
"Let her come," Ethan said. "Every time Vanessa opens her mouth, she tells us something we didn't know. Tonight she told me she never loved me. That's worth knowing."
He squeezed my hand once before he let go. "You were good tonight."
"I was terrified," I said.
"That's why you were good. She could see you weren't acting." He almost smiled. "And you stood up to her. I didn't expect that."
Rosa came back a minute later and stood in the doorway again. This time, she didn't look confused. She looked at Ethan, then at me, and something soft came into her face.
"I didn't see anyone come in tonight, sir," she said. "And I won't remember anything tomorrow."
"Thank you, Rosa," Ethan said.
She closed the door quietly behind her.
I stared at the door for a long time after she left. A week ago, I didn't know a single person in this house. Now a maid I barely knew was keeping my secret, and the man I had married while he was asleep was on my side. I didn't know how long it would last, but for tonight, it was enough.
I went to the window to get some air. The night was dark, and the lights along the driveway were on. I saw Vanessa walking fast down the steps with her white coat flying behind her. I expected her to get into a taxi or one of her family's cars.
Instead, she walked to the end of the driveway, where a gray car was waiting with its lights off. The back door opened for her before she reached it.
Under the lamp by the gate, I saw the man sitting inside. He leaned forward to say something to her, and I saw his face clearly.
It was Uncle Richard.
"Ethan," I said, and my voice came out as a whisper. "Come here. You need to see this."
Lily's POVWe didn't sleep that night.By the time the fire trucks left the lake house, it was almost four in the morning. A doctor cleaned the glass out of my hands in the back of an ambulance and wrapped them in white bandages. Ethan sat beside me the whole time with Duke at his feet, and he didn't let go of my arm once. The police asked me what happened. I told them the truth. A woman invited me there, locked me inside, and turned on the gas. When they asked me her name, I looked at Ethan."Not yet," he said quietly. "When we tell them, it has to stick."So I said I didn't know her, and I hated how easy the lie came out.Back at the house, Eleanor was waiting in the front hall in her robe, with her cane in both hands. She didn't say a word when she saw my bandages. She just put her thin arms around me and held me for a long time. It was the first time she had ever hugged me. She smelled like lavender and old books, and for a moment I felt like someone's granddaughter."Richard came
Lily's POVFor one second, I couldn't move. The smell was everywhere now, filling my nose and the back of my throat. I knew enough from the diner kitchen to know what happened when gas found a flame. One spark, and the whole house would go up with me inside it.I ran into the kitchen and pulled my sweater up over my mouth. My eyes were burning. I grabbed the knobs on the stove and turned them off one by one, four, five, six, until the hissing stopped. But the room was already full, and the gas was moving toward the living room, toward the fire, with nothing to stop it.Water. I needed water. There was a big glass vase on the kitchen table, full of the same white flowers Margaret loved. I threw the flowers on the floor, grabbed the vase with both hands, and ran back to the living room. The fire was snapping and jumping in the stone fireplace. I threw the water as hard as I could. The flames hissed and shrank, but they didn't die. Half the logs were still glowing red.My head was starti
Lily's POVI waited until the house was asleep.Ethan had fallen asleep a little after eleven, with one arm thrown over his eyes and Duke stretched across the foot of the bed. I lay on my sofa in the dark and listened to him breathe. Every few minutes, I touched the card in my pocket to make sure it was still there.Come alone. If you bring the Blackwoods, the truth dies with me.I knew it was a trap. I wasn't stupid. But all my life, I had believed I knew who I was. I was Lily Carter, the daughter of a woman who worked two jobs and sang in our tiny kitchen. Now I didn't know anything anymore. And the only person who had the answer was the woman who had tried to kill my husband. At half past eleven, I got up. I put on my old jeans and the gray sweater I had brought from home, the only clothes in that house that were really mine. I picked up my shoes and carried them in my hand.At the door, I stopped and looked back at Ethan.I almost woke him. I almost told him everything. But I thou
Lily's POVMarcus drove faster than I had ever seen anyone drive.I sat in the back with my phone pressed to my ear, calling Noah's room again and again. Nobody answered. Every red light felt like an hour. Every car in front of us felt like it was trying to kill me.Ethan sat beside me. He wasn't supposed to be there. Eleanor had told him that if anyone saw him walking into a hospital on his own two feet, the whole plan would fall apart. Ethan had looked at her and said, "Then nobody will see," and put on a baseball cap and a pair of dark glasses and got in the car anyway."He's fine," Ethan kept saying. "Carla said he's fine. Breathe, Lily.""She sat with him," I said. "She sat with my brother and asked about his medicine. The same woman who put poison in your glass last night."He didn't answer that, because there was nothing to say. He just held my hand so tight it almost hurt, and I held his back.I thought about the night Noah's heart stopped, the alarms and the nurses running pa
Lily's POVI don't remember walking back down the east hall. One moment I was sitting in Eleanor's study, and the next I was standing outside Ethan's door with the photo of Rose still in my hand.Eleanor had told me to keep it. "Show him," she said. "He should hear it from you."When I opened the door, Ethan was standing by the window. He was dressed, with his hair still wet from the shower, and Duke was sitting at his feet. He turned around fast when he heard me."What did she say?" he asked. Then he saw my face, and his voice changed. "Lily. What happened?""She knows," I said. "She's known since the wedding. I told her everything."He crossed the room in four steps. He was still slow, but he didn't use the cane. He took my face in both hands and looked at me like he was checking for wounds."Did she threaten you?" he asked. "Did she say she would call the police?""No," I said. "She's on our side."He let out a breath. "My grandmother is never on anyone's side.""She is now," I sai
Lily's POVI stared at the photo until my eyes burned. The young woman in the garden was smiling at whoever held the camera. She looked happy and a little shy, the way I looked in the only good picture my mother ever took of me. I touched the small mark below my own ear without meaning to."How long have you known?" I whispered.Eleanor leaned back in her chair. "Since the day you married my grandson."I looked up at her, and she almost smiled."Do you remember what I said to you at the wedding?" she asked. "I told you that you hated hospitals. Vanessa did hate them. She visited Ethan twice after his accident, and both times she left in under ten minutes. But you sat by his bed and held his hand like you'd been doing it your whole life. And when I said it, you didn't even know what I was talking about. I saw it in your face.""You never said anything," I said."I wanted to see what you would do," she said. "So I watched. Duke growled at Vanessa every time she came to this house, and o
