Lily's POV

The bus dropped me at the bottom of the hill just after six, and I walked the rest of the way to the Blackwood house. My feet hurt, but my heart felt lighter than it had in weeks. Noah had laughed today. He had eaten a whole cup of pudding and told me the nurses were nicer than me.

Then I saw the black car parked by the front steps, and the lightness went away.

It was the same car that had been outside the hospital. Marcus was standing next to it, and he gave me the same small nod he had given me through the window. He didn't say a word. He didn't need to.

Rosa met me at the door. "Mr. Blackwood is asking for you, Mrs. Blackwood," she said quietly. "He said to come up as soon as you got home."

"Is he okay?" I asked.

Rosa looked at the floor. "He seems fine. He's just very quiet."

I climbed the stairs slowly. Each step felt like a mile. I kept thinking about the visitor book at the hospital and the name I had written in it. Lily Carter. My own name, in my own handwriting, for anyone to see.

Ethan was sitting up in bed when I walked in. Duke lay on the rug beside him and lifted his head to wag his tail at me. Ethan didn't smile. He was holding his phone, and he turned the screen so I could see it.

It was a video of me. I was standing at the front desk of the hospital, bending over the book, writing my name.

"Close the door," Ethan said.

I closed it. My hands were shaking so badly that I had to hold the handle for a second before I could let go.

"Lily Carter," he said. He spoke slowly, like he was tasting the name. "Twenty-four years old. You work at a diner on Fifth Street and clean offices at night. You have a twelve-year-old brother named Noah, who had heart surgery eight days ago." He put the phone down on the blanket. "Marcus is very good at his job."

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

"Sit down," he said, "before you fall down."

I sat in the chair beside the bed, the same chair I had sat in the night I married him. "Please," I whispered. "Please don't tell them. If the Sinclairs find out, you know, they'll stop paying the hospital. Noah still needs months of care. He'll lose everything."

"Then tell me the truth," Ethan said. "All of it. If you lie to me one more time, I will call Margaret Sinclair myself."

So I told him.

I told him about the diner and the night shifts and the bills piling up on our kitchen table. I told him about Dr. Patel and the three hundred thousand dollars and the one month deadline. I told him how Margaret Sinclair had found me in the hospital cafeteria and looked at my face like she had seen a ghost. I told him I said no the first time and how Noah's heart stopped at two in the morning and how I called her back with my face still wet from crying.

By the end I was crying again. I wiped my face with my sleeve and hated myself for it.

Ethan listened to all of it without saying a word. When I finished, the room was so quiet I could hear Duke breathing.

"So the Sinclairs sold me a fake bride," he said at last. His voice was cold and hard. "Vanessa didn't want a husband who might never wake up, so they found a girl who looked like her and paid her to take her place."

"Yes," I said.

"And how much are they paying you?"

"The surgery," I told him. "And if you lived, five hundred thousand dollars after one year."

He laughed, but it wasn't a happy sound. "I was engaged to Vanessa for two years. I bought her a ring that cost more than most people's houses. And the first time I needed her, she was in Paris buying shoes. " He shook his head. "I should throw you out tonight."

My stomach dropped. "I know."

"But I'm not going to."

I looked up at him. I was sure I had heard him wrong.

"Think about it," Ethan said. "Somebody in this house put sleeping pills in my medicine. Somebody wanted me to stay asleep forever. My uncle smiles at me like a man waiting at a funeral, and my own nurse was paid to keep me weak." He looked right at me. "And the only person in this house who isn't trying to kill me is a waitress who signed someone else's name on my marriage papers."

"I would never hurt you," I said.

"I know," he said. "That's the problem. You're the only one I can trust, and you're a liar."

I didn't know what to say to that, so I said nothing.

"Here's my deal," Ethan went on. "You keep being Vanessa in front of my grandmother, in front of Richard, and in front of everyone. I'll keep your secret, and I'll make sure your brother's bills get paid no matter what the Sinclairs do. In return, you help me find out who drugged me. You watch every pill, every meal, and every person who walks into this room."

"And when it's over?" I asked.

"When it's over, we'll talk about what happens next," he said. "But from now on, you don't lie to me. Not once. Do you understand?"

I thought about Noah laughing with pudding on his chin. I thought about the blue pill in my hand at breakfast. Then I nodded.

"I understand," I said. "No more lies."

He held out his hand. It was still thin from the long weeks in bed, but his grip was strong when I took it.

"Good," he said. "Then welcome to the family, Lily Carter."

It was the first time anyone in that house had said my real name to my face. I didn't expect it to feel like that. I didn't expect it to feel like I could breathe again.

Then someone knocked on the door.

I let go of his hand fast. Ethan leaned back against the pillows and made his face go tired and weak, as if someone had flipped a switch.

"Come in," he called in a soft, slow voice.

Rosa opened the door. Her eyes went from me to Ethan and back to me, and she looked nervous.

"I'm sorry to bother you, sir," she said. "But there's a visitor downstairs. She says her name is Vanessa Sinclair, and she's asking to see her husband."

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Flowers for Noah

Lily's POVMarcus drove faster than I had ever seen anyone drive.I sat in the back with my phone pressed to my ear, calling Noah's room again and again. Nobody answered. Every red light felt like an hour. Every car in front of us felt like it was trying to kill me.Ethan sat beside me. He wasn't supposed to be there. Eleanor had told him that if anyone saw him walking into a hospital on his own two feet, the whole plan would fall apart. Ethan had looked at her and said, "Then nobody will see," and put on a baseball cap and a pair of dark glasses and got in the car anyway."He's fine," Ethan kept saying. "Carla said he's fine. Breathe, Lily.""She sat with him," I said. "She sat with my brother and asked about his medicine. The same woman who put poison in your glass last night."He didn't answer that, because there was nothing to say. He just held my hand so tight it almost hurt, and I held his back.I thought about the night Noah's heart stopped, the alarms and the nurses running pa

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   Margaret Says Hello

Lily's POVI don't remember walking back down the east hall. One moment I was sitting in Eleanor's study, and the next I was standing outside Ethan's door with the photo of Rose still in my hand.Eleanor had told me to keep it. "Show him," she said. "He should hear it from you."When I opened the door, Ethan was standing by the window. He was dressed, with his hair still wet from the shower, and Duke was sitting at his feet. He turned around fast when he heard me."What did she say?" he asked. Then he saw my face, and his voice changed. "Lily. What happened?""She knows," I said. "She's known since the wedding. I told her everything."He crossed the room in four steps. He was still slow, but he didn't use the cane. He took my face in both hands and looked at me like he was checking for wounds."Did she threaten you?" he asked. "Did she say she would call the police?""No," I said. "She's on our side."He let out a breath. "My grandmother is never on anyone's side.""She is now," I sai

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   The Truth in the Study

Lily's POVI stared at the photo until my eyes burned. The young woman in the garden was smiling at whoever held the camera. She looked happy and a little shy, the way I looked in the only good picture my mother ever took of me. I touched the small mark below my own ear without meaning to."How long have you known?" I whispered.Eleanor leaned back in her chair. "Since the day you married my grandson."I looked up at her, and she almost smiled."Do you remember what I said to you at the wedding?" she asked. "I told you that you hated hospitals. Vanessa did hate them. She visited Ethan twice after his accident, and both times she left in under ten minutes. But you sat by his bed and held his hand like you'd been doing it your whole life. And when I said it, you didn't even know what I was talking about. I saw it in your face.""You never said anything," I said."I wanted to see what you would do," she said. "So I watched. Duke growled at Vanessa every time she came to this house, and o

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   What the Old Woman Knew

Lily's POVNobody in the front hall said a word.Vanessa's mouth opened and closed. The tears on her face were still wet, but she had stopped crying. Margaret's hand was frozen on her chest, and Richard was looking at the floor like he had dropped something there.Eleanor held the necklace up again and let it swing in the light."Rose Sinclair was my friend for forty years," she said. "I sat in the front row at her funeral. Her son asked for this necklace to stay with her, and I watched him put it around her neck myself." She turned to Mr. Sinclair. "Isn't that right, Thomas?"Mr. Sinclair's face had gone gray. "Yes," he said quietly. "That's right.""So either someone dug up your mother," Eleanor said, "or this is a copy."She dropped the necklace into Margaret's hand like it was something dirty."It's a copy," Eleanor said. "A cheap one. The real stones had a pink color in them. These are glass." Then she looked at Vanessa, and her voice turned as cold as ice. "You put a fake neckla

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    The Necklace in My Purse

Lily's POVEthan lifted the glass toward his mouth, and my body moved before my mind did.I turned to him fast, like I wanted to kiss his cheek, and my elbow hit the glass. It flew out of his hand and broke on the marble floor. White wine splashed across Margaret's blue dress and all over the rug.Everyone in the room jumped."Oh my God," I said, and I put both hands over my mouth. "Ethan, I'm so sorry. I'm so clumsy tonight.""It's fine," Ethan said. He looked at the broken glass, then at me, and I saw in his eyes that he understood. "It's only wine."Margaret's smile looked like it was made of glass too. "Of course, darling. Accidents happen." But her hands were shaking as she wiped her dress, and she wouldn't look at me.A maid ran in with towels. Before she could touch anything, Marcus stepped in from the hallway, where he had been waiting all night."Let me help," Marcus said, and he knelt down and picked up the biggest piece of glass with a napkin. Then he folded the wet napkin

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   Dinner with the Enemy

Lily's POVI had spent four long days inside the Sinclair house while Margaret taught me how to be her daughter, and I never thought I would have to walk back through its doors. Tonight every window was lit, and there were white flowers on every table, like the house was dressed up for a party instead of a lie. A man in a black suit opened the car door for us before the engine had even stopped.Ethan took my hand as I stepped out. He was walking with a cane tonight, and he leaned on me just enough that anyone watching would believe he needed it."Breathe," he said into my ear. "You look like you're walking into a fire.""I am," I said."Then smile while you do it."Eleanor and Richard got out of the second car behind us. Richard was already smiling, but Eleanor's face gave away nothing. She looked at the house the way a buyer looks at something she isn't sure she wants.Margaret Sinclair was waiting in the doorway in a long blue dress. The moment she saw me, she opened her arms."My d
