"Sign on the dotted line, Mr. Sterling. Right beside the red mark."

The city magistrate did not look up from his metal desk. He was an older man with thick glasses resting on his nose, smelling of stale black coffee and dry paper. The small room at the edge of the industrial town had yellow walls, peeling paint, and a wall clock that made a loud clicking sound every single second.

Alec stood over the desk. His tall frame blocked the morning light coming through the dirty blinds. His hair was combed neat, but the white bandage was still wrapped tight around his forehead. He wore a dark business suit his assistant had brought from the city hours earlier. He looked completely out of place in the dusty government office.

He picked up the heavy black pen. His hand did not tremble, but his fingers pressed into the plastic casing until his skin turned white.

"Is this valid right now?" Alec asked, his voice low, flat, and dry.

"The second both of you finish signing," the magistrate said, stamping a blue ink seal onto the lower page. "By law, she takes your name. Shared estate access, medical power of attorney, legal spouse rights. Everything."

Alec stared at the line. His mind flashed to Genevieve back on the island estate. He thought of the wedding invitations his mother had already prepared, the seaside venue booked for next month, and the high-society life he had arranged for himself.

He put the metal tip down and dragged his name across the blank space. Alexander Sterling.

"Now the woman," the magistrate said, sliding the white folder across the wood.

Sienna sat in a metal chair against the wall. She looked small inside an oversized, faded gray hoodie that covered her body completely down to her knees. Her face was pale, her lips dry, and a rattling cough shook her shoulders every two minutes. She held a paper cup of warm water in her hands, her fingers shaking against the wet rim.

"Miss... Mrs. Sterling," the magistrate corrected himself without emotion. "Sign here."

Sienna looked down at the paper, then raised her eyes to Alec. He was not looking at her. He stood like a stone wall, staring at the window blinds, his jaw set hard.

"I can walk away if you want," Sienna said softly, her voice raspy and broken from breathing the chemical smoke. "I asked for a baby, but I never asked you to lose your whole life."

Alec turned his head slowly. His dark eyes met hers with zero warmth.

"A Sterling pays his debts, Sienna," Alec said in a short, clipped tone. "You went into the fire. Four men are alive today because you ruined your health. I do not take handouts from anyone, and I do not owe favors to people. You made your demand. I am fulfilling it. Put your name on the paper so we can get out of here."

Sienna felt a hard knot form in her chest. She put the paper cup down on the corner of the table and took the black pen from his fingers. Her hand touched his skin for a fraction of a second, but Alec jerked his hand back immediately, as if her skin burned him.

She bent over the page. Her writing was small and unsteady compared to his bold, sharp letters. Sienna Roy.

"Done," the magistrate said. He brought a heavy red wooden stamp down on both sheets with a loud thud, then slid the papers into a folder. "It is finished. You are legally married."

Neither of them spoke. There was no handshake, no wedding ring, no smile. The only sound in the small office was the ticking clock on the wall.

"Where are her hospital records?" Alec asked, turning his back to the desk and checking the time on his silver wristwatch.

"Right here, boss," Miller said, opening the door from the outer hallway. The older worker held a thick white envelope. "The site doctor cleared her for travel, but he said she needs pure sea air and zero industrial dust. Her chest is still badly damaged from the gas."

"The black vehicle is parked out front," Alec said, taking the envelope without looking Miller in the eye. "Miller, your payout check and the non-disclosure papers are with my driver. Make sure the other two men sign their copies before noon today."

Miller stood there, looking at Sienna in her oversized sweater, then back at Alec. "You taking her straight to the island?"

"Where else would I take my wife?" Alec said, his tone biting hard on the word.

He did not hold the door for her. He did not offer to take her small bag. He turned around and walked out into the corridor, his boots hitting the concrete floor with heavy steps.

Sienna stood up slowly, her knees shaking under her baggy sweatpants. She pulled her hood low over her forehead to cover her tired face.

"Stay strong, little girl," Miller said in a quiet whisper, touching her arm gently. "He is a hard man to deal with, but he never breaks an oath. He will give you the family you asked for."

"I know," Sienna whispered, staring at the empty doorway. "That is what scares me."

***

The drive to the coast took nearly two full hours.

Alec sat on the far side of the leather back seat, his laptop resting on his knees. His fingers moved across the keyboard without stopping, replying to business emails and checking financial reports. He did not look at Sienna once. He treated her like an empty space in the vehicle.

Sienna leaned her head against the cool glass window, watching the brown factories turn into open green fields, until the wide blue ocean came into view. Her chest felt tight and hot. Every breath she pulled into her lungs came with a faint whistling sound that made her throat sting.

When the car pulled onto the private pier, a large white motor yacht was tied to the dock posts, rocking slowly in the water. Two crew workers dressed in white shirts stood waiting near the gangplank.

Alec shut his computer screen, pulled his dark suit straight, and got out into the sea air. Sienna stepped out behind him, holding her worn canvas bag tight against her side.

"Good morning, Mr. Sterling," the boat captain said, tipping his cap. "The main house called ten minutes ago. Your mother arrived from the city early to handle the final setup for your engagement event with Miss Genevieve."

Alec stopped moving instantly. His shoulders went rigid.

"My mother is already on the island?" Alec asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous calm.

"Yes, sir. She wanted everything in place before you returned."

Alec stood still for several seconds, breathing in the salt air through his teeth. When he turned back around to look at Sienna, his face was cold and closed off. He looked at her dirty shoes, her worn-out clothes, and her pale cheeks.

"Listen to me," Alec said, stepping close so the crew could not hear his words. "My family knows nothing about what happened at the site. They know nothing about Miller, the coin, or this deal. To everyone on that island, you are my wife because I decided to marry you. You will not say a single word about how this started. Do you understand?"

Sienna looked straight into his dark eyes. "Are you ashamed to be seen with me?"

"I am protecting my family name," Alec said, leaning down slightly so his shadow covered her face. "My brother lives on that estate. My mother is there. Genevieve is there. You got your marriage certificate. You will get your baby. But you will never make a fool of the Sterling name by telling people I traded my future on a coin toss."

Sienna squeezed the strap of her bag until her palms hurt, but she kept her back straight.

"I will not tell them anything," Sienna said. "I know how to keep quiet."

"Good," Alec said, turning his back on her and stepping onto the yacht. "Get on the boat.”

"Take your hands off that luggage!"Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the grand foyer like a siren. She marched across the white marble floor, her emerald heels clicking with aggressive force. She wore a tailored green pencil dress, oversized dark sunglasses, and thick gold chains resting against her collarbone."Miss Genevieve," Thomas the butler said, holding two heavy leather suitcases with white-gloved hands. "Madam Eleanor gave direct orders for your luggage to be placed in the carriage house suite.""The carriage house?" Genevieve snatched the vanity case straight out of his grip with a sharp snap of her wrist. "Are you out of your mind? I am Alexander's future wife. My belongings go into the master villa on the south bluff. Where is he? He went completely silent for four days after that explosion. My father and I have been calling the harbor office nonstop. Why was he not waiting at the landing pad when my father’s pilot touched down?""I am right here, Genevieve."Alec walke

"Why did you not stop him at the site clinic?"Julian set his water glass down on Alec's mahogany desk with a sharp, echoing crack."Nobody stops me from doing anything, Julian. You know that better than anyone on this island."Alec stood behind his heavy desk inside the north study. He had already showered, washed the black soot from his neck, and changed into a clean dark blue dress shirt. The white medical tape on his forehead was clean, but his face was rigid and exhausted."Genevieve has been calling my mobile phone every ten minutes since noon," Julian said, pacing across the hardwood floor. "She thinks you are meeting her at the south landing pad with flowers.""Let her think what she wants. The engagement is finished.""Our deep-water port permits are tied to her father's signatures, Alec. Do you understand how state politics operate?""Richard Mayor needs our shipping infrastructure just as much as we need his municipal approvals. He will not pull the port agreements.""He wi

"Who is the girl behind you, Alexander?"Eleanor Sterling stood at the edge of the private wooden dock. The ocean breeze blew across the water, but her beige linen dress stayed perfectly straight. Her hands were folded over her silver walking stick, her sharp gray eyes scanning the yacht deck."Her name is Sienna."Alec walked down the gangplank first. His heavy leather shoes hit the wooden planks with loud, hollow thuds. His suit jacket was slung over one broad shoulder, his dark hair messy from the salt air."That is a name, Alexander. It is not an explanation.""She is my wife, Mother."Eleanor did not flinch. She did not raise her voice. She simply adjusted her grip on her walking stick, her eyes drifting past Alec's wide chest to the small figure walking slowly down the wooden ramp behind him."The magistrate from the lower district telephoned my private office two hours ago," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and cold as polished stone. "He informed me that the senior heir of Sterl

"Take that bag off your shoulder."Alec kicked the heavy cabin door shut. The brass lock clicked into the frame."Where are we going right now?""We are forty minutes from my family estate. Drop the canvas bag on the floor."Sienna stayed near the small round table bolted to the wooden deck. She clutched the rough strap with both hands."You said we were just traveling to the island.""I said we had business to finish before the boat touches the pier."Alec tossed his suit jacket onto the leather couch. He pulled his silver cufflinks free and set them on the desk."Why are you taking off your clothes?""You stood in front of the magistrate two hours ago, Sienna. You signed your name on the state paper.""I signed because you told me to.""You signed because you asked for a baby in exchange for four lives. Do you think babies arrive by mail?"Sienna backed up until her hips hit the wooden dresser."Not like this. Not on a moving boat in the middle of the sea.""Once we hit that dock, f

Make sure she gets the best care available."Alec stood at the edge of the white curtain in the field medical tent, his forehead covered with clean white bandages. His chest was sore, but his eyes were sharp, dark, and fixed entirely on the small hospital bed.Sienna looked tiny under the heavy blankets. Her face was pale as paper, her lips dry and cracked. The baggy work clothes she always wore on the site had been cut away, replaced by a simple hospital gown that rested loosely on her shoulders.Alec walked closer, his boots clicking softly on the floor. The three surviving workers she had dragged out before going back for Alec stood near the end of the bed, their faces bruised, their hands shaking with nervous energy."You saved every single one of us, young lady," Miller, the oldest worker, said, his voice cracking with emotion. "The doctors told us you pulled three of us ou
