The warning came a second too late.
The air split open with a sharp, deafening tear that shook the metal floor plates under their boots. A massive wave of heat slammed straight into the side of the rig, tossing grown men into the air like loose gravel. Heavy black smoke and gray concrete dust swallowed the entire corridor in less than two seconds, wiping out the overhead utility lamps.
"Move, move! Leave the tools!"
Panic tore through the darkness. Men screamed, tripping over torn electrical wires and falling over collapsed steel beams as they scrambled toward the emergency exit stairs before the secondary gas tank blew the entire lower level apart.
Nobody looked back. Nobody stopped to check who was missing.
Except her.
Sienna coughed hard into a wet cotton rag, pressing it tight against her mouth and nose. Her chest felt like someone was pouring boiling water straight down her throat. Her lungs burned violently against the thick chemical fumes, but she did not run toward the exit. She pushed her way deeper into the suffocating gray smoke.
"Is anybody in here? Answer me!"
Her voice was raw, cracking against the loud whistling roar of leaking gas pipes. She stumbled over a bent iron pipe, hitting her knees hard on the steel grating. Pain shot up her legs, but she forced herself back up, ignoring the sting.
She was just a temporary contract cleaner brought in for waste disposal. She had no family waiting for her anywhere. No mother, no father, no relatives. If she died in this basement today, nobody would light a candle or shed a tear for her. But these workers had wives, children, and parents waiting for them at home.
Through the blinding smoke, she saw two workers trapped beneath a fallen ceiling support.
"Help us! We cannot move our legs!" one of the men shouted, coughing violently.
Sienna threw her whole body against the heavy iron girder. Her arms shook, her back straining with every ounce of strength she possessed until the metal lifted just enough for them to crawl out.
"Get to the emergency ladder! Run!" Sienna yelled over the sound of snapping steel.
"Come with us! The whole lower deck is going to drop!"
"There is still someone down here! Go now!"
She pushed them toward the yellow exit light and turned right back into the choking dark. She found a third worker lying flat on the floor, dazed and bleeding from a head wound. She dragged him by his jacket collar across the floor plates, shoving him through the outer safety door before turning around one last time.
Her vision was spinning. Black spots danced across her eyes, and every breath pulled pure chemical poison into her chest. Then, her boot hit an arm on the floor.
"Hey! Wake up!"
She dropped to her knees, clearing away the thick layer of soot from the man's face.
It was Alec Sterling, the site manager. He was the quiet, cold boss who never spoke a friendly word to anyone, spending all his hours looking at blueprints. His forehead was split open, blood running down the side of his pale cheek, his eyes shut tight.
"Open your eyes! You have to stand up!"
Alec let out a low groan, his head rolling against the steel floor.
"I cannot... my legs..."
"You have to! Push your feet!"
Above them, the main ceiling support groaned loudly, bolts snapping off and flying across the room like bullets.
Sienna did not waste another second. She got under his heavy arm, hauling his large, muscular frame over her shoulder. Her knees buckled under the crushing weight, but she locked her legs and forced herself forward step by agonizing step.
The heat seared her face. Every breath tore through her lungs like broken glass. She knew what this gas did to human organs. It was destroying her body from the inside out, but she refused to let him go.
"I have you," she rasped, her throat bleeding as she dragged him along the narrow catwalk. "Just hold on. Stay awake."
"Leave me... get out..." Alec mumbled, his voice fading.
"Shut up and keep moving!"
She hit the heavy emergency fire doors with her shoulder, falling out into the harsh daylight just as a massive explosion ripped through the lower deck behind them, blowing the steel frame into scrap metal.
Sienna collapsed face-first onto the gravel, gasping for air that would not enter her lungs. Paramedics rushed over instantly, fitting an oxygen mask over Alec's face.
"We got him! He has a strong pulse!"
"Get the boss onto the stretcher! Move!"
Sienna rolled onto her back, her vision fading into gray as the shouting turned into a distant hum.
A paramedic knelt beside Sienna, cutting open the neck of her torn work shirt to place a stethoscope against her chest. His eyes went wide with sheer terror.
"This girl! She went back into that toxic hole four separate times!"
"Is she breathing?"
"Barely! Her lungs are completely burned by industrial gas," the medic shouted, shoving a breathing tube into her throat. "If we do not get her to the emergency ward in two minutes, her body will shut down completely, she will not even survive until tomorrow morning!”
"I am not going anywhere, Alec," Sienna said, her voice steady in the quiet of the study.Alec did not move. His forehead stayed pressed against hers, his warm breath coming in slow, ragged tremors that brushed against her cheek. His large hands remained fixed over the curve of her stomach, his fingers splayed wide as if the slightest shift would make her vanish into thin air."Look at me," she told him softly, raising her hands to cradle his stubbled jaw. "Look at me and tell me you believe that."Alec lifted his head slowly. The dark shadows beneath his eyes looked carved from slate, but the cold, calculating mask he wore for the harbor board was gone. All that remained was the exhausted face of a man who had carried a fire in his chest for three years."I spent months watching you walk through these halls like a stranger," he rasped, his thumbs tracing the wool over her belly. "Every time you lowe
"Put it down, Sienna," Alec said, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous scrape. He stood frozen two feet inside the open doorway, his damp overcoat hanging heavy off his broad shoulders, his boots caked with harbor grit. His dark eyes were locked on her lap.He stared straight at the scorched, singed leather of the journal resting open across her knees, his own ragged ink exposed to the pale winter light."You wrote this," Sienna said, her chin lifting high as she met his wild, shadowed stare. "The day after the fire. You sat in a clinic on the mainland and wrote this about me.""Give it to me," Alec commanded, taking two violent, measured strides toward the desk. "Now, Sienna.""No," she said, her voice shaking with sudden heat. "You do not get to order me around in this room, Alec. Not today."Alec stopped t
"Mrs. Sterling, please answer me!" Mrs. Gable's voice echoed through the lower gallery. "The master is on the terrace path!"Sienna did not move from the armchair. Her boots remained planted on the wool rug, and her knuckles turned white around the edges of the open book."I have to know," she whispered to the quiet air. "I need to know everything you kept from me."Downstairs, the heavy iron latch of the terrace entrance gave a dull, violent clang."Where is she, Mrs. Gable?" Alec's deep voice carried up through the central stairwell, rough from the harbor wind and laced with sharp agitation."Mr. Alexander, please, let me take your coat," the housekeeper pleaded from the landing. "She was resting in the east parlor just an hour ago.""She is not in the parlor," Alec snapped, the sound of his wet leather boots striking the marble ro
"I should have died under the timber," Sienna whispered to the empty room. "But the girl with the dark eyes would not let me burn."She turned the dry page carefully."Why were you even there, Alec?" she asked softly, her eyes tracing his sharp handwriting. "You had no business in the parish basement."The next line gave her the answer."Julian thinks I was checking pump valves," she read from the paper. "Eleanor thinks I was inspecting city pipes. None of them know why I was down in that basement. I went there because I saw her carrying bread into the chapel three mornings in a row."Sienna drew in a sharp breath. "You were watching me before the fire? All that time?"She turned the leaf, reading the heavy black ink aloud."She wore an oversized gray sweater with holes at the cuffs," she read, her fingers trembling. "Her hands were red f
